Traveled from Deer Lodge to Elliston on the way to Helena. Elliston is this tiny community about 30 min outside of Helena and right before MacDonald Pass. The national forest road to access this was literally an unmarked tiny dirt road between a saloon and gas station that led to the forest. The propane furnace struggled here at around 5500' elevation, so it was chilly but beautiful. P.s. Not pictured was the lots and lots of cow poop that we first mistook for bison poop. I guess there are feral 🐄 in the Montana mountains? Bankhead National Forest Series Stops #3 and 4: Shangri La Falls and Collier Creek Falls. The weather was so pretty today. A perfect day to continue on with the Bankhead National Forest Series These next two are on the same trailhead. There’s enough parking for about 5 or 6 cars and if you do some reading online, some sources say that the trails are hard to follow and it’s very difficult to navigate but that’s not the case now. There’s been a controlled burn of the underbrush in the past year or so and it’s super easy to navigate. Sooo, follow the trail and you’ll end up at a canyon. Getting down the side of this canyon is kinda hard but not impossible. Shangri La Falls is up on the right once you’re down in the canyon. It’s beautiful, with a crystal clear blue pool and it’s deep enough for swimming. Looks like some relatively good spots to camp around there too. Once you’re finished here, you’ll navigate upstream for a little ways, taking in the breathtaking scenery on the way. The rock structures in this canyon are amazing. You’ll dead end following the creek at Collier Creek Falls. It’s so pretty. Got a small pool but a lot of water for you to cool off and relax in. Definitely one of my fav spots so far. A lot of hype was said about the Shangri La Falls but Collier Creek was hands down the best. Hart Well Canyon, Sedona, AZ. This place is located ~8 miles outside of town out Forest Service Road 525 (gravel). The canyon entrance itself is fenced, private property, but the areas outside it are public lands. Jeep tours make regular, short stops here. There's a cattle pond behind some trees/bushes (next to an old corral where you can park) that make for some jaw-dropping photos. Fans of the paranormal might be interested to know that this area is known for all kinds of weirdness like UFOs, orbs, portals, creatures, haunted ranches, etc. An underground alien base is also supposedly secreted deep inside one of the canyons out here. I can't vouch for any of that, but I bet this place can get pretty eerie at night. Ugh, Cloudcroft! I found this amazing, tucked away site high up on the ridge line for the night and watched a killer sunset that I’m still not over. There’s a road to the bottom right that I wanted to see if I could pull out of the photo because it was just too neat not to point out. I sat up there and watched one or two locals traverse down into the canyon, probably 30 miles at least from their mailbox, and just admired them. I mentioned it to someone and they said something along the lines of “you live out there you die out there”. I was thinking more along the lines of “you live out there, you’re really living”. Linville Falls- we can file this adventure under “there’s no such thing as bad weather”. 🩵 It was 52°F and raining, but we still went. And, it was lovely! We had the best time and there were hardly any other people (which added to the loveliness 😉). The visitor center opened for the first time of the season today and we grabbed a few postcards and Blue Ridge Parkway tokens and were on our way. We almost stayed in, because of the gloom, but we went anyway and were both really happy we did. It was kind of like the Pacific Northwest in North Carolina.

How about hiking in and out of clouds?!! ⛅️☁️☁️🥾 Yesterday my friend Kim and I left OC early and headed out to an extraordinarily beautiful area of the Los Padres National Forest that neither of us had ever explored before! We were oohing and aahing our way to the lookout and back…. unbelievable!!! 🌲🌲🪵🌼🪻A beautiful fire road lined with thousands of lupines and poppies, old gnarly oak trees and gorgeous pines - and clouds hanging low on the mountains surrounding us! While in the clouds the sweet little poppies were closed up, still sleeping, but as we gained more elevation and stepped out of the clouds, they were wide awake and reaching for the sunlight! ☀️☀️ It truly felt magical, like never before! 🙏🏻🤍 (photos by me and Kim, unedited) 🪻🌲🪻

For #NationalParksWeek we’ve been sharing some of our favorite FREE camp spots located near U.S. National Parks. 😁🏕️ ************ Our final camp of the week is a dispersed campsite in Custer Gallatin National Forest, just north of @yellowstonenps . Jardine Road exits Gardiner, Montana to the north. It’s one helluva drive with a number of twists & turns and gorgeous views! Before you head into the forest, there is a bend in the road with camping info and a link to a downloadable @avenzamaps with suggested camps. As you climb the road, it takes you up a small mountain with several pull-offs to camp and enjoy a great view of Gardiner and Yellowstone. Unfortunately for us, all the spots with a view had been taken (the sky was filled with wildfire smoke anyway). We continued on for a while until we found this secluded camp in the trees. What a peaceful night we had!
