Science in a Free Society by Paul Feyerabend “Every piece of knowledge contains valuable ingredients side by side with ideas that prevent the discovery of new things.“ Two years ago, I came across a book named Against Method (1975), basically this volume is a continuation of it, of its irreverent attack on widespread ideas about the nature of knowledge and the prestige of science in the west, with an added rebuttal to critics of Against Method. The main difference between Against Method and Science in a free Society is that the author extended his critique beyond the problem of scientific rules and methods, to the social function and direction of science today. If you would like to read about how Feyerabend took the epistemological principles from Against Method and extended them to a political theory about the role of science in a democratic society, this is your book. In the first 1/3 of the book, the author again reminded us how science and their methods are not inherently objective. Science is a tradition, with its own method of conceptualizing problems and deriving conclusion, and of course, limitations. Thus, there is no perfect method, the concept that a single method contains firm, unchangeable and binding principles in all situations is perilous. Throughout history, there is not a single rule, however plausible, however firmly grounded in logic and general philosophy that is not violated in some forms, at some time in the future. The invention of atomism in antiquity, the Copernican Revolution, the rise of modern atomism (Dalton; kinetic theory; dispersion theory; stereochemistry; quantum theory), the gradual emergence of the wave theory of light occurred only because some thinkers either decided not to be bound by certain ‘obvious’ rules, or because they unwittingly broke them. The examples Feyerabend brought up are not to encourage randomly breaking rules and doing research arbitrarily and unguided. There are standards, but they come from the research process itself, not from abstract views of rationality. It needs ingenuity, tact, knowledge of details to come to an informed judgement of existing standards….Swipe photos to read the rest :)

The falsification theory, often associated with philosopher Karl Popper, is a key concept in the philosophy of science that emphasizes the importance of testing and potentially disproving scientific theories. According to Popper, a scientific theory should be considered valid only if it is capable of being falsified or proven wrong. In other words, a scientific hypothesis or theory must make specific, testable predictions that can be subjected to empirical scrutiny. The idea behind this approach is that scientific knowledge should be based on a process of rigorous testing and attempted disconfirmation, rather than seeking confirmation. In practice, the falsification theory encourages researchers to design experiments and observations that could potentially refute their hypotheses, as it is through such attempts to falsify a theory that scientific knowledge advances. If a hypothesis survives numerous attempts at falsification, it gains credibility and can be considered a robust scientific theory. This principle of falsifiability sets a high standard for scientific claims, promoting transparency, openness to criticism, and the continual refinement of scientific knowledge through the rigorous evaluation of hypotheses and theories. #FalsificationTheory #ScientificResearch #KarlPopper #Falsifiability #SciencePhilosophy #EmpiricalTesting #TheoryValidation #ScientificMethod #knowledgeadvancement

"In my opinion, it’s a task in life to train oneself to speak as clearly as possible. This isn’t achieved by paying special attention to words, but by clearly formulating theses, so formulated as to be criticizable. People who speak too much about words or concepts or definitions don’t actually bring anything forward that makes a claim to truth. So you can’t do anything against it. A definition is a pure conventional matter. They only lead to a pretentious, false precision, to the impression that one is particularly precise. But it’s a sham precision, it isn’t genuine clarity. For that reason, I’m against the discussion of terms and definitions. I’m rather for plain, clear speaking." — Karl Popper, 1974 lecture on definitions #KarlPopper #Philosophy #Clarity #Truth #Definitions #Precision #CriticalThinking #PhilosophicalThoughts #QuoteOfTheDay #Wisdom #ThoughtLeadership #SciencePhilosophy #DeeperUnderstanding #ClearCommunication #Insights #fallibilism #epistemology #criticalrationalism #daviddeutsch

#scienzafacile #scienzapertutti #divulgazione #divulgazionescientifica #cenèdivulgatori #scienzenaturali #philosophy #sciencephilosophy #democracy #filosofiadellascienza #filosofia #scienza #metodoscientifico #cittadinanzascientifica #cittadini #citizen #people #scienceinstagram #sciencefacts

On this day in 1894, Dorothy Maud Wrinch was born. She was a notable mathematician and a pioneer in the field of biochemical theory. She is best known for using math to understand protein structures and for advocating the 'cyclol' hypothesis, a controversial idea about how proteins are structured. Wrinch's early work included a 1917 paper defending Russell's philosophy. Between 1918 and 1932, she wrote 20 papers on math and 16 on science philosophy. She presented a paper in 1928 about constructing harmonics for curved surfaces at a math conference. In 1932, she discussed harmonics related to certain shapes. Her collaboration with Harold Jeffreys led to his 1931 book on the scientific method. Around 1932, Wrinch shifted to theoretical biology, co-founding the Biotheoretical Gathering, a group exploring how proteins function. She moved to the United States in 1939, teaching at colleges like Amherst, Smith, and Mount Holyoke. From 1942 to 1971, she conducted research at Smith College. . . . #todayinwomenshistory #womeninresearch #womeninmathematics #femaleinspiration #smartwomen #sciencehistory #womeninstem #womeninscience #womenmakehistory #womenmathematicians #sciencephilosophy
