[27 - 29 Feb 2024] Pacific Ocean towards Chiloe (250 nautical miles passage) . The passage from Caleta Suarez to Puerto Quellon was quite uncomfortable. The forecast was favourable with 20 kts of South wind and 3 meters waves from SW. We expected a nice sailing trip surfing down the waves. But of course the reality was different than the forecast 😅😅 the waves were real but the wind was completely off. We had very little wind, enough to fill the sails and push the boat forward but not enough to give us a good speed to compensate the waves. As a result, the first half of the trip we were going slow and wobbling around the big waves 😅😅 we all felt a bit seasick 🤢 . Luckily the second half of the trip was muuuuch nicer! We got good wind and the waves got smaller. By the time that we were approaching Corcovado gulf and the south of Chiloe, the sun was rising and we were having a very smooth sailing. . The morning of Feb 29th was sunny and warm. We missed those days! Finally we could take off the boots and enjoy some warm weather sailing again 🤩 . We arrived in Quellon together with SV Boat McBoatface, and we had our friends Caro and JP waiting for us overthere! . There was a whole new adventure awaiting for us from now! In 10 days we have a wedding to attend in Ralun, north of Puerto Montt. We were about 180 nautical miles away from the location. We had time but we also needed good weather windows to move north! . Whilst in Indonesia we visited the second environmental school opened by @chilicommunityhouse on Lombok. We donated a roof to them back in November with the prize money I received from @lionsclubs It was an incredible school and the children were so cute! We started our morning bright and early on a boat ride from Gili T to Lombok, once we got off the boat we both got on the back of some motorbikes and made our way to the school (that alone was buckets loads of fun)! Once we arrived we were greeted with loads of hugs from the kids! We were then shown around to see all the work they do and the plants they grow and sell to support the running costs of the school. We even got to try some special tea which comes from a blue flower which turns your water blue! But with a drop of lime it turns your water purple it was so interesting and had such a cool taste, the tea helps relax you when you’re stressed! The school was incredible and the teachers were so lovely. They practice scream therapy, this is to help the children get their emotions out, a lot of the children don’t have a great life at home so this is a form of therapy! It was such a heartwarming experience! We finished off with our boat ride back to Gili T but unfortunately for me it was a bit choppy on the way back and I suffer desperately with sea sickness (despite wanting to be a marine biologist)😂! ONE YEAR AGO TODAY It’s been one year since our departure from New Zealand. We had 10,000 nautical miles ahead of us across the Pacific Ocean, squeezing between cyclone season in the southern hemisphere and hurricane season in the northern hemisphere. We didn’t have a cyclone or a hurricane but we did have a series of unexpected and challenging equipment failures as we made our way north to Tonga, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and finally Sitka, Alaska. If you haven’t already subscribed to Oh Joy! on Substack, do that for these stories. 1. The customs agent in NZ left us with a heartfelt order: “Turn back if you need to. If conditions are too tough, just come back.” We were departing at wintertime, in what would be the equivalent of October in the States. Storms were already hitting the coast of NZ. 2. Harry takes down our New Zealand flag minutes before our departure. 3. We were so happy to be on our way! Once outside the harbor we were met with rough seas and high winds and we were both terribly seasick for about 8 hours. 4. Seas calmed and the sun rose on a glorious morning. 5. We were the first boat to arrive in Tonga for the season. We’ve been home now for six months. These milestones feel big still. It’s disorienting, how much our lives have changed in the last year.
