Uh, so, day TEN was Brother Bear, Day ELEVEN for #Septembear2019 is actually Smokey the Bear ๐ The character turned 75 last month, happy belated birthday, Smokey! โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Okay, so. Smokey the Bear has always been a bit weird to me, from a very outsider perspective. In order to appeal to kids (and not be Bambi who was the original wild fire prevention mascot), they decided to create a hyper masculine bear with no shirt or shoes but a hat, jeans and a BIIG belt buckle..!? Also heโs always depicted as being brown when the real life Smokey was a black bear? So many questions, 1940s! โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Unfortunately my health hasnโt been playing along and so even though I did the sketch for the chart for Smokey a week ago, its been SLOOOW going with a little bit done every other day or so for the past six days. I had considered trying to just do a pen sketch with a wash for the rest to try and expedite the whole thing but @jenji_mccool and @greghulse290 advised that I should just continue as I had been because I had been loving it SO MUCH and it didnโt matter how long it took - the deadline is arbitrary anyway! Day eleven, past the third way mark for #Septembear2019 and this dayโs is Brother Bear. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Iโve never seen this movie, so I didnโt really know what to expectโฆ I read the plot synopses on Wikipedia and was weeping by the end of it. GOODNESS! ๐ญ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Though, *whispers* thatโs not how bears workโฆ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ IDK about the chart for this, I think I shouldโve given Kenai more cheeks/jowls, and after I made the decision to have them looking at it each other it was hard to not have them lookโฆ Suspicious ๐ ๐คฃ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I greatly enjoy the sketch - though all the layers and nuances got lost in these photos, I really need to work on that! They both wear simple aran-weight, yoke neck jumpers - Kenaiโs is stockinette and Kodaโs is reverse - and Iโm PARTICULARLY pleased with the wide ribbed bear-cables & bobbles scarf - the motif is loosely based on the bear totem for the film. FULLY need to chart and make it.

I am actually not a giant fan of Fozzie, and my charted bear is fairly faithful but also kind of creepy? My seven year old doesnโt really know anything about The Muppets and she said it looked like a bear from Five Nights at Freddyโs xD xD SO! Iโve switched it around and you can see the chart second instead of first ;) โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Fozzie, specifically, might not be my favourite, but this might be one of my favourite bears Iโve done so far this month! A polar bear for #Septembear2019 day eight - enjoying a moment of sun on the ice. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Loosely themed on used-to-be-brown-but-became-polar-to-save-on-printing Rupert Bear, I went with a simple ribbed yellow scarf but a really well cabled sleeve on his jumper. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ I enjoyed watching Rupert Bear cartoons as a kid but HIS HUMAN HANDS REALLY FREAKED ME OUT AND STILL DO! Theyโre TOO HUMAN, and too small for how big his face/head is? Two colossal Rupert Bear hands clasp each other across the mouth of Melty-Waxworks River, DEEP in the Uncanny Valley. So gigantic and still somehow too smallโฆ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ ANYWAY! Despite that intense tangent, I kind of love this polar bear. Did I mention that watercolours are magic?

I decided to focus more on the classic version than the Disney one, hence the proportions of my charted bear. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ This is the first chart where I really considered that the outlines in it werenโt doing it any favours ๐ Actually knit - or c2c crocheted! - without the outlines, this would look a whole lot cuter and make more coherent sense. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ The first sketch concept I did for a Winnie the Pooh inspired anthropomorph was based on a bear holding/keeping a jar of honey with its back turned towards the viewerโฆBuuuutโฆ. Uuuuhโฆ KIIIIND of ended up looking as if Ebenezer Scrooge met Igor/Renfield and they decided to parent some kind of Gollum-esque honey hoarding bear!child. Made it to Day 6 of #SeptemBear! Today's prompt was Spectacled Bear. ๐ค I love their color pattern. It was a lot of fun to play with. I leaned more toward the skull mask look of them for this ๐ .
