On Thursday May 9, SRA Executive Director Jesse Iliff was honored to join lawmakers and fellow advocates at the signing ceremony for two important bills SRA worked on this past legislative session: SB969/HB1165 the "Whole Watershed Act" which will target increased restoration funding to 5 rivers of the State with the aim of accelerating ecosystem response. Over the next 5 months SRA will be forging a broad coalition of stakeholders to push for the Severn to be selected as a recipient of this funding. SRA held a very successful Weems Creek restoration community meeting on Friday night to get community input into potential projects in the watershed and along the shoreline and streams with the help of project partner Center for Watershed Protection. This meeting is for Phase II of the Severn River Action Plan, which is creating a long-term strategy to address stormwaterrunoff and other pollution, prioritizing subwatersheds for according to their need for restoration, and to identify specific restoration projects in the top priority subwatershed - Weems Creek. Thank you to everyone who came out to learn more, discuss, and be involved in the process! The Severn River Action Plan is funded by a Small Watershed Grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Happy Earth Day! But at SRA, it’s Earth Day everyday. Over the weekend 20 volunteers came out to the community of Linstead to help work on getting rid of the phragmites patch along the river. First they chopped down all the plants, then spread out a heavy duty tarp to kill the roots. The tarp will be in place for 2 years, then we will go back and plant native species to occupy the space, provide habitat, and help with erosion. SRA Past Presidents Bob vom Saal and Lynn Rockenbauch have demonstrated this technique, developed at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, at Arlington Echo. Can you see what this fox is staring at? Nature's camoflauge is always amazing. It's a good old fashioned stand off between this red fox and a copperhead - right by Chase Creek. The North American Copperhead also goes by the name Highland Moccasin. They live in swampy, rocky, and wooded regions. Luckily the venom from these snakes is relatively weak and seldom fatal. Conrad and Grace were glad to be out on the river to kick off 2024’s water quality monitoring season, but Back Creek wasn’t too glad about the heavy rain recently—an algal bloom is underway at the mouth of the river. Samples collected yesterday showed bloom of the non-toxic species, Heterocapsa rotunda, concentrated to145,068 cells/ml. Note the dark tea color of the water in the bucket. Clarity was poor as well at a mere 13cm (5 inches! Anything less than 60cm is scored as an F through Chesapeake Bay Program) and there was super-saturation of dissolved oxygen, all symptoms of algal blooms. Women's History Month: Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores was an indigenous environmental justice activist and grassroots leader who created the National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations (COPINH) in Honduras. She fought courageously against illegal and harmful mining and logging as well as the construction of a dam that would cut off water, food and medicine for the indigenous Lenca people. Women's History Month: Marina Silva is a warrior for the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. Silva was a colleague of Chico Mendes, who was assassinated for defending the rainforest in 1988. She and Mendes led demonstrations in the 1980s to protect the rainforest from government control. After Mendes’ assassination, Silva became a politician and fought for environmental protection, sustainable development, and social justice. BREAKING: Late last night, a 2.5" sewage force main in the Annapolis Roads community ruptured, causing approximately 100 gallons of sewage to spill into the river by the mouth of Lake Ogleton. An Anne Arundel County utilities crew responded overnight, and by 8:30 a.m. the breaks were repaired and backfilled. More exciting news on the oyster front. In 2024 we will be partnering with @chesapeakebayfoundation to help the Naval Academy improve resilience to climate change through oyster restoration. SRA's Jesse Iliff commented, “The Severn River Association is pleased to partner with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on this oyster restoration project, which will increase aquatic habitat and filter water in the Severn, while simultaneously providing critical climate resilience for the U.S. Naval Academy. The Naval Academy has minted generations of the finest naval officers in the world dedicated to protecting our nation. Amazing news on the oyster restoration front: thanks to a new grant from @chesapeakebaytrust and the @chesapeakeoysteralliance, we're thrilled to share the details of our groundbreaking project on deploying oyster larvae in the Severn River. Instead of using spat-on-shell, we will be placing larvae directly on the oyster reef for restoration (“direct setting”). Today marks the 40th anniversary of the very first Chesapeake Bay Agreement. On December 9, 1983, the governors of Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, the Mayor of the District of Columbia, the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission came together to sign the historic document. The Agreement laid the groundwork for creation of the Federal Chesapeake Bay Program, and began building the funding and expertise necessary to restore and protect the Chesapeake. Just recently, SRA and our partners at @centerforwatershedprotection completed a comparative assessment of restoration need for all the creeks on the River, and guess what? Weems Creek is #1 in restoration opportunities! We are using this assessment to work on identifying restoration projects that will reduce pollution, improve water quality, and create habitat. Severn River Association has received some inquiries about the construction of some piers along property commonly known as the “Green Cathedral” near Hopkins Creek. After investigation of the conservation easement documents, we have been unable to find evidence of any violation of the easement or critical area law. The Deed of Forest Conservation Easement provides for the property owner to “construct one pier for each single family building lot having frontage on Hopkins Creek and no existing pier.” Reviewing the Maryland Department of Environment’s Wetlands and Waterways permit system’s website shows two permits issued for piers in the area, and a third for a revetment. Permits for these projects were issued in 2019 and 2020.
