Miriam Miranda is a human rights activist who advocates for the Indigenous and environmental rights of the Garifuna people in her native Honduras. She leads the Black Fraternal Organisation of Honduras (OFRANEH), a grassroots group defending the ancestral lands of Indigenous Hondurans, which has gradually been taken over by foreign tourism and real estate investors, displacing many Garifuna people in favour of building luxury hotels and residences. For her activism, Miranda has been illegally arrested by authorities and kidnapped by drug cartels. Despite the risks to her life, she continues to fight for the Garifuna people's right to self-determination. "I want to talk about the role of women in defending life, culture, and territories, opposing a model of death that grows stronger each day," she said in 2015. "We are at the front of the avalanche of attacks. Everywhere throughout Honduras, like in all of Latin America, Africa, Asia, women are at the forefront of the struggles for our rights, against racial discrimination, for the defence of our commons and for our survival. It's been a darn good day, and I'm feeling really grateful. I was able to get connected with some really awesome gardener and farmer ladies here in this beautiful valley. I learned how they live their lives as social activism in action, I enjoyed listening to their terrifically entertaining life stories about how they came to this point in time. We prepped garden beds in the greenhouse and herded the goats, I learned about the complexity of Native bee keeping not just to consume honey but to help the planet as whole. Family history, dynamics, and relationships are complex. Like a deeply buried perennial root system, they are intricate, fragile, resilient, strong, entangled, and intertwined. My relationship with my father is no different. I have written about growing plants and togetherness for the new volume of Mahora @mahora_book , a Japanese book series to which I am a regular contributor. I am a daughter, and it is as such, yet also as more, that I wrote about sowing opportunities for my father and me to know one another as two adults while in gardens— places within and yet somewhat peacefully remote from the world—where we comfortably find common ground. For the past ten years, we have cultivated kinship with flowers, herbs, vegetables, foliage, fruits, and nuts close and separated from each other. My gratitude goes to editor Kotaro Okazawa @kotaro_okazawa for his continuous trust, to my friend and collaborator Minami Kanesawa for carefully translating my words and intentions from English to Japanese, and, of course, to my family.
