More of the Everglades… On our recent visit, we started where the park began. Before there was a National Park, there was Royal Palm State Park, Florida’s first state park, created expressly to protect the nearby Paradise Key. Today, Royal Palm is a visitor center within the larger national park. The adjacent Anhinga Trail is a paved and wooden walkway, an excellent way to learn about the Everglades. The River of Grass is America’s third largest National Park at over 2,300 square miles, the first national park formed to protect an ecosystem, not scenery or geography. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We spotted many interesting glimpses of the ecosystem, from dragon flies to a Halloween Pennant (pic 4). An Anhinga was drying its feathers nearby (pics 5-7). It is also known as the Snake Bird for its long and flexible neck. It dives for long stretches underwater, hence the tightly closing eyelids. Nearby, an American Purple Gallinule was eating the pod of a water lily (pics 8-9). The long toes allow it to stand and walk on the floating leaves. Spent an amazing night out in the Everglades under a sky full of stars ❤️ Check out the meteor that is to the right; from the Lyrid meteor shower. This was a single exposure of 8 seconds.. right where the core of the Milkyway was coming over the horizon. Our group was granted special access to the Nike missile base inside the Everglades park. When I was in the Florida Everglades, not only did an alligator come over to check us out, but this turtle did as well. I'd never seen a turtle like this before. I think it's a softshell turtle. It was content to swim around with the alligator up until the alligator sunk under the water, and then the turtle hightailed it out of there. It was just swimming around the boat, checking us out. GATOR RESEARCH. Fun one from my memories when I worked for UF CrocDocs! A solid night of alligator captures with my friend @thermoregulator_ . I left the house at 2pm and got home at 4pm next day with no real sleep between, we caught gators straight through the night nonstop from sundown to sunup. We set up camp in the afternoon but never made it back since the action was so good! This is part of an ongoing study under University of Florida, we were wayyyyy out in the Everglades wilderness sampling a new location. Ed drove the boat and I was in the front catching, together with stellar team work we captured nine alligators that night and measured, weighed, tagged, and took blood samples along with environmental data. Interestingly some of our alligators were captured in hypersaline waters, saltier than sea water! This is not a novel occurrence but always interesting. It was so much fun, we started as soon as the sun was down and we were still hunting as the day broke, trying to use up that last bit of darkness. Nights like this is what I live for, absolutely love being out in the remote waterways capturing crocodilians, living the dream. I swear I looked at the clock and it was 8pm, fine minutes later it was 3am!
