Blue Berries Smoothie - Rs.159/- Mouthful Walker's Food Truck, Barik Point, Shillong Smoothies, Juices, Fruit salads, Waffles $$$$ 24.04.24 After the not so heavy Chicken Chowmein lunch from Naomi's Cafe, I was driving down towards Anjali Petrol Pump when thanks to the hot weather, I decided to stop by next to the Mouthful Walker's Food truck at Barik Point. Now there are two Mouthful Walker's trucks in town, one at Ward's Lake & this one at Barik. I parked the car & got down to ask what was on the menu. This particular truck was a Toyota Innova MPV & had mostly juices, smoothies, a few salads & waffles. I was expecting some not so healthy options, but for those you need to go to the truck near Ward's Lake. I did stop there a couple of days later but I was in a hurry so had to cancel my order. Always another time. Anyway coming back to Barik, I decided on a Kiwi Smoothie, however the staff there advised me against that flavor & to rather choose something else. He also shared that the owner is from the Bihari community who have settled in Shillong. Anyway I guess berries are sort of superfoods, so I ordered a Blue Berries Smoothie. Now this was before I had the Kiwi Smoothie at U Pa. So my take on this smoothie will be benchmarked against the one I had at U Pa. I waited a good 15mins to get my order. 1st observation was that it wasn't as cold as I would have liked it to be. I took a swig & it had a thick consistency & you get to feel the texture of the fruit's pulp & skin. Taste wise it wasn't bad, only needed to be colder. For 159/- portion & taste was ok but just couldn't match up to the U Pa smoothie I had a few days later. Chicken Thali - Rs.120/- I Mei & Will Sweets Corner, Lumshyiap, Shillong Sweets, Snacks & Thalis $ 24.04.24 This is my 3rd time eating out today. I had some work in Pynthorumkhrah & after that was done I was proceeding to Langkyrding. It was 8pm & I was getting a bit hungry so I stopped at the Lumshyiap market to check out my options. This place had plenty of eateries but I didn't want Chinese for dinner so I was looking for a simple Indian thali. And I found what I was looking for in a Sweets Corner popularly called as Dairy that goes by the name I Mei & Will Sweets Corner. The place was like any normal dairy located on the 1st floor. I entered inside & the lady informed that the only options available for Thali were Veg, Chicken & Egg. I opted for the Chicken Thali. 10mins later my Thali arrived with Rice, Dal, 2 pieces of Chicken Curry, Aloo bhaji, Mint Chutney, Achaar & Papad. The rice was ok in quality, the dal was seasoned well, the curry was simple but tasty but one of the pieces of meat was a little undercooked & stringy. The 2nd piece was fine. The fried potatoes also kept things simple. The pudina chutney added fresh flavors to an otherwise simple thali. Overall this is a no nonsense no drama kind of thali & for the price, it serves its purpose well i.e. to fill people up. American Platter -Rs.360 Kiwi Coconut Milk Smoothie -Rs.150 U Pa - Coffee & Eatery, Dhankheti, Shillong Cafe, American, Continental, Chinese $$$$ 26.04.24 A few days back @mevashangpliang informed me about this new place in Dhankheti called U Pa. I was surprised at the name & that I haven't heard of it even though I pass through here everyday. It's been open for 3 weeks. So today in my search of food other than Thalis & Chow, I landed up here. I entered inside & yes it was a very small place but the space was optimally used. I took a seat & asked for the menu. This had a proper cafe menu. It had a lot of options & my 1st question always is which items are not available. To my surprise, everything was available. I had a chat with the staff & came to know that they have their main outlet in Jowai. This is the 2nd cafe that I've been to in the last 30 days that have a main outlet in Jowai. The 1st was @belly_timber_shillong with its awesome Pizzas & Cold Coffees. Kudos to the Jowai food scene. I ordered an American platter which had Herb Rice, Grilled Chicken in Brown Sauce, Fried Chicken Sausages, French Fries & Sauted Veggies. I don't usually order drinks, but thanks to the ongoing heat wave, I got myself a glass of Kiwi Coconut Milk Smoothie. The food came after 15mins. The herb rice looked like a fried rice but wasn't. I liked it since it wasn't overly herby which sometimes make things bitter. The Grilled chicken was perfect with the brown sauce & the meat was still moist inside. The sausages were fried but not oily. The had a nice seasoning & were juicy. The sauted veggies had carrots beans mushrooms garlic & gave the meal a nice texture. The smoothie had coconut milk, cream, cheese & slices of fresh kiwis. It was so tasty & refreshing. Best smoothie I've ever had. This sure was a great find. Fish Thali - Rs.160/- Hotel Royal Green, Itshyrwat, Shillong Indian, Chinese $$ 23.04.24 Today me & @mick_is_precious had some work at NEIGRIHMS & so before reaching we decided to have lunch. It was 3pm & @human_serial__001 had a couple of months ago told me that the Thali at Hotel Royal Green was worth giving a try. The location is perfect as it is at an intersection where 5 roads meet. We stopped the car & entered inside. The place was green inside out. The interiors were done up well but I thought that the arrangement was a little peculiar. We were in a hurry so while Precious asked for a Chicken Thali, I went with my usual Fish Thali. They also had Tandoori items but only on weekends The food arrived after 10mins & looked better than I had expected. It had decent quality rice, a fish cooked in mustard seeds & tomato curry which turned out so well, chana dal, a potato capsicum fry, aloo gobhi sabji, papad & pickle. The fish curry was so flavorful & tasty. One of the better fish curries I've had in a while. Even @mick_is_precious regretted not getting the fish. However, the piece that I got must have been the stomach so was a little bitter but it was still fine. The chana dal, though good in taste, was a little too dry & was more like a fried sabji. The potato capsicum was simply fried & hit the spot. The aloo gobhi had somewhat of an unconventional appearance to it, perhaps because of the color, but it didn't taste bad either. The only thing I was missing though was a serving of chopped or diced fresh salad. That would have made this meal whole. The Garo workers were polite & attentive. Overall @human_serial__001 's recommendation did not disappoint. A good stop to eat if you are in the area. Beef Dhanthuk - Rs.220/- Iced Tea - Rs.60/- Agapae, Riatsamthiah, Shillong Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, Thai $$ 21.04.24 I've always had Agapae on my list of places to visit & I've ordered home but it was not only till when @benwankhar told me that I was missing out for not having tried their Barley Soup that I made it a point that I should make a visit. So today after church service, I stepped in this small little cute eatery which was packed. I took a seat & ordered the Beef Barley Soup. To my utter disappointment, they didn't have it. So I decided on the Beef Dhanthuk, which is a cold noodle dish from Tibet. I requested them to cut down on the chillies. The good thing of eating at a place is that you get to request them to make the food as per your preferences. And well just to be on the safer side, I ordered an Iced Tea as well. I don't usually like cold food but it was a warm day. The food didn't take time to arrive. It came in a decent sized bowl. It had wok tossed noodles with a layer of fresh cabbage & carrot strands & spring onions on top & a portion of what looked to be stir fried beef cut into small little pieces. I took a bite. The noodles were not as cold as I expected, just tepid. They were a little bland but complimented the spicy beef very well. The beef was very tender. However a few pieces were a little stringy but then that's just my dental issues making a fuss. The cabbage carrot & spring onions added texture & a hint of sweetness came from the carrots. This was a highly enjoyable meal. However having said that, the Iced tea failed to cool me down in the hot weather . Overall this place lived up to my expectations. Aloo Matar Paratha - Rs.110/- Black Coffee - Rs.50/- The Phoenix Residency, Nongthymmai, Shillong Indian, Chinese, Continental $$ 21.04.2024 It's actually been a few months since I last went out to find a breakfast place on a Sunday morning. So today I found myself in the parking lot of The Phoenix Residency in Nongthymmai. This place is a hotel with 29 rooms, a restaurant & banquet hall. I've got food home delivered from here twice & I remember the last was a Matar Paratha which was pretty good. I took a seat & was welcomed by the wonderful hostess. I asked for the Matar Paratha but was told that it wasn't on the menu. Then I asked for Poha & I was informed that it was served only during breakfast & I was a little too late. So I requested the hostess to kindly check with the kitchen if somehow they can manage the Matar Paratha. She came back 5 mins later & informed that the Aloo Paratha could be modified into an Aloo Matar Paratha. That sounded like a good compromise for me. I also got a cup of Black Coffee as well. The food arrived after 10mins. The paratha was cut into 4 decent sized slices & I could see the green peas in the filling. However the plating of the food was disorderly which I didn't find appealing or expect from such an establishment. It came with a bowl of plain curd & achaar. I was a bit surprised that I was given a quarter plate rather than a proper plate to eat in. I took a bite & yes this did hit the right spots. The quantity of green peas was more than the alu filling. So while the mashed potato gave it a creamy texture & held everything together, the taste of the green peas was what I was looking for. It helped balanced out the spices from the alu filling. The curd & achaar helped as well. Overall this did not disappoint. Local Chicken Thali - Rs.150/- Rashi Kitchen, Lad Smit, East Khasi Hills Dhaba, Thalis & Chinese $ 20.04.24 After a very tiring couple of days that led to me suspending my food blogging activities, I'm back & about looking for something interesting but less stressful to eat & I think what I found today is exactly that. My exploration leads me to Rashi Kitchen. It's a spacious enough dhaba with modest looking interiors, the tables though were very interesting & thoughtfully made. I have been noticing this place a few times whenever I go for my treks towards Mawkynrew & Jaintia Hills. The place serves Chinese & Thalis like most places do, but this is perhaps the 1st place that I remember that serves a Thali with local chicken. Usually my 1st preference is always Fish, & they did have it here, but I stuck with the local chicken thali this time. This place was a little away from town & if you are driving here then keep in mind the horrendous Shillong traffic. The food arrived in less than 10mins. It had rice, dal, fried potatoes, tomato chutney, papad, salad & 2 pieces of local chicken curry. Anyway the rice was of decent quality, dal was also good, the fried potatoes simple & no drama, the chutney refreshing but the chicken curry was the pick of the lot & it had enough of meat & not just bones. Simple yet flavorful. Infact the entire thali can be called that. My only gripe is that they should have added one more sabji considering that this is in the heart of Cauliflower, Carrot & Raddish country. I got to say hello to a person the staff called "Boss" but I guess he wasn't a very chatty person. Veg Thali -Rs.90/- Omlette (Single) -Rs.30/- Papad -Rs.10/- JC's Shillong Hotel, Bawri Mansions, Dhankheti, Shillong Bengali style Thalis $ 09.04.24 This is the 3rd time I'm eating out today. After I left the hospital in the evening, I decided to stop by Shillong Hotel which is in the ground floor of Bawri Mansions in Dhankheti. Shillong Hotel was my closest thali place after the Covid-19 lockdown. And there were days when I stayed alone that I ate atleast one meal everyday out here. Now it's been a year or more since I last stepped in so I thought I would see how things were doing. And since this was in someway a sort of a life saver during the dark lockdown days, I thought I should do a reel on it. The thali I had for lunch at Hotel Suravi in the day was nice but not so satisfying enough. I took a seat in the very basic seating arrangement & since I didn't want anything too heavy, I ordered a Veg Thali with a single omlette. I also added a papad. Earlier if I'm not wrong, the papad used to come with the thali. Signs of the times. Anyway the thali came & it had decent quality rice, dal, aloo bhaji, mix veg with soya bean chunks & chutney. The papad was extra. The dal was okay. The aloo bhaji was fried with some kalonji & tasty. The omlette was perfectly seasoned & had onions & chillies. But it was just the mix veg that gave it extra flavors & I'm glad they gave it. Overall it was a simple & homely meal that was appropriately priced. The thali at Hotel Suravi I had for lunch was too basic. This was improved by a notch. Fish Rice (Thekera) -Rs.250/- Komal Saul -Rs.80/- Tholgiri, Uzan Bazaar, Guwahati Ethnic Assamese Cuisine $$$ 13.04.24 Today on the 1st day of Rongali Bihu we drove down to Guwahati to check out the Bihu festivities & decided to have lunch at Tholgiri in Uzan Bazaar. My brother in law who stays here wasn't aware of this place. Tholgiri refers to "The Goddess Earth". We easily found this place. We got down & my sister was grumbling since she saw it was in a corner. But like the phrase goes, never judge a book by it's cover. We climbed the stairs to a store that had items from all over Assam. The owner came up & welcomed us. He told us that there were 15 types of rice in the store. The dining area was in the next room & it was still full so the owner did his best to keep us entertained for the next 10mins. 10mins later we entered the dining area which had a section of Assamese books in the corner, with paintings adorned on the wall. The wall was very interesting, it was like it was taken straight out of a hut. Anyway I ordered the Fish Rice in Thekera preparation & for dessert I ordered the Komal Sual . This was Axomiya OG version. The food came & it had Rice, Dal, Fish curry (Thekera), aloo pitika, Pani tenga, fried pumpkin, fried ferns, aloo bhindi, boiled veg, salad, chutney & lemon. Thekera is a local fruit used as a souring agent. The komal saul dessert was a variety of soaked local rice added with curd, cream & local jaggery. The thali was very simple with less spices but the fish cooked in Thekera was light, tasty & the sourness added freshness to the meal in this hot weather. The komal saul was a match made in heaven. Service was a tad slow but polite & welcoming. Overall this was a great find. Beef Kothey Momos - Rs.220/- House of Momo, Behind Old Supercare Hospital, Lummawrie, Shillong Momos, Shapaley, Nepalese items $$ 12.04.24 Today I'm back with another "Opening Day" post covering @houseofmomo_shillong . I have been having their beef momos for 3years now but only at food festivals & packaged ones. So I'm so happy that they finally have a place where people can go to eat anyday. Their beef momo is definitely on my list of Top 3 momos of all time. But their Shapaley is so far no.1 for me. After a long & exhausting day, I found my way to Lummawrie & was actually looking forward to trying out their Shapaley again. However, thanks to the erratic power outages, the deep fryer could not be switched on. So I moved on to Plan B & that was Beef Kothey Momos. This is my 1st time trying them. Kothey Momos appeared in the 17th century when Newari merchants travelled from Lhasa to Nepal bringing this dish. The plate of 8 momos came with a sesame sauce, the chilli sauce wasn't yet ready again thanks to the lack of electricity. Anyway I love the sesame sauce more for its nutty flavors. The momos were glistening. I love steamed momos more than fried ones & this was both. Would this sit inbetween the two? I took bite to find out. It was dripping juices all over my chin. It was just so succulent. I liked the smoothness of the upper wrap but I loved the crunch that came from the bottom. The sesame sauce pushed it further to another level. I love jhol momos as well. But this is definitely now Numero Uno for me. Work on the decor & other aspects is still in progress. But you don't visit it for that. This is a no nonsence momo joint which sticks to OG varieties & leaves you with happy momo memories. Service was also just top notch. Mocha - Rs.120/- Affogato - Rs.150/- Corn & Cheese Sandwich - Rs.240/- Cl!ck Cafe, Dhankheti, Shillong Coffeeshop, Sandwiches & fries $$$ 09.04.24 I had visited this place a year back & had ordered Tea & waffles. It was nice but then it was @lady_buddha who informed me that I missed out by not trying their coffee. My revisit as always was long overdue & it was only last week that I did a quick coffee stop with a friend & tried their Affogato. It was so good that I'm back today with a colleague. I had lunch at noon today so I ordered just a Mocha & recommended my friend to try out the Affogato. They had sandwiches & french fries so we got a plate of Corn & Cheese Sandwich to munch on. The Mocha which traces its roots to Yemen was creamy & had a hint of chocolatey flavor to it. A quarter sachet of sugar & it just hits all the right spots. The Affogato is basically an Italian dessert with espresso & vanilla ice cream as ingredients with some chocolate shavings on top. I was told that the Shakerato is a little stronger compared to this. I tried the Affogato & it was even more better than what I had a few days back. Perhaps since I wasn't in a rush & had the time to savor things. The sandwich was also not disappointing at all, though it was a tad pricey considering it's corn & cheese & no meat. It did have the perfect portions for a snack. Assorted Northeast Platter - Rs. 190/- Kai Nung, above Pulp Dental Clinic, near Bethany Hospital, Nongrim Hills North Eastern Food Stall $$ 10.04.24 From the house of Zamyra, comes "Kai Nung" which in Rongmei Naga means "The Kitchen". I'm grateful to my buddy @iceshira for informing me about its Opening Day today. I've tried the North East Thali at @zamyra_restaurant last year & it sure did impress, so I was pretty excited about this as well. I climbed up two flights of stairs to a pretty spacious space with cute wooden tables & stools. The menu board was still being filled in when I entered. We were greeted by the owners who genuinely seemed happy to have us. We were expecting thalis but this place adopts the Khasi style of Dukan Ja Foodstall where the food is already prepared & placed inside the glass cabinet & then you have some fun choosing & picking what goes onto your plate. I chose Chicken Kappa, Fish, Red Rice, Dal, Brinjal, Yam leaves, cauliflower salad, chana, aloo fry, karela & beans, eromba & singju. The rice & dal were served hot direct from the cooking pot. My plate of food looked absolutely pretty. However all that variety got my tastebuds confused. There was so much going on. But everything was good & prepared homely. I couldn't find a single item that didn't sit right with me. The chicken Kappa was definitely the pick of the lot. I also realized that everything I ordered felt very healthy. Portions may be on the smaller side but for 190 bucks & with all this variety, I don't think it's something that will bug me. Infact it gives me room to try some other items. I'm someone who usually prefers everything on my plate to be served warm but somehow this just worked just fine. Fish Thali (Rui) - Rs.150/- Hotel Suravi, Last Stop, Kenches Trace, Laban Bengali style Thalis, Snacks $ 09.04.24 I don't remember who told me about this place but about a month back I saw it on the @fatafat_shillong app & though I wanted to place an order, I decided that I should go & make a visit myself. So today after finishing off some work at Civil Hospital, I proceeded to Last Stop where this eatery is located. The place is run by a lady by the name of Mary Barua Barman & a gentleman in the kitchen was doing the cooking. I climbed up the stairs to the 1st floor & entered the eatery which had a simple decor. To my surprise, the menu had a large variety of items apart from Thalis. I stuck with the Fish Thali. I wanted Katla, but they had only Rui. Perhaps it's the same case with the other items on the menu. Anyway 5 mins later, my order arrived. It had Rice, Dal, Aloo curry sabji, Fish Curry, Papad & Sidol chutney. The rice was parboiled rice & ok quality. The dal was slightly watery. The fish was first fried then cooked in a tomato gravy with some saunf that gave it a slight sweet liquorice flavor. The sabji was a little disappointing as it was just potato having almost the same taste as the fish curry. The Sidol chutney was a little too spicy for me, so I left it. Overall it's a basic refill thali that will fill one up but not sure if it can satisfy. If only some better choice of veggies were given or added to the thali. At 150, it's not so cheap to not be able to add one sabji more also. Chicken Do Pyaaza -Rs.250 Aloo Gobhi -Rs.150 Tawa Roti -Rs.50 (2pcs) Eldorado Restaurant, Dhankheti, Shillong Indian & Chinese $$$ 05.04.24 Today I wasn't planning to post anything. I was hungry as I didn't eat breakfast & it was lunch time. My nephew was admitted to the hospital so I was about to eat at one of the Dukan Ja when suddenly I remembered Eldorado Restaurant. 12 years back this was my pitstop every evening after work as it had good parking space. Then a few years later they converted the restaurant into rooms for the guest house & a small space was made the restaurant. Somehow I never ate here again. I was happy to see they had extended the small restaurant & made it more spacious with large windows overseeing the lawn. This is one of my favourite properties in Shillong with the old charm of the Assam type bungalow still standing so elegantly. I had a look at the menu & it was almost the same as before. I ordered Chicken Do Pyaaza, Aloo Gobhi & Tawa Roti. I remembered the food to be decent & it came within 15min. There were 2 decent sized rotis, 3 large pieces of chicken cooked in a thick gravy & the aloo gobhi was cooked dry with lots of onions & capsicum. The chicken was very soft & the meat wasn't stringy as I expected. The curry did not look like do pyaaza but was tasty all the same. The aloo gobhi reminded me more of do pyaaza. Portions were generous so I asked for more rotis. Sadly the rotis came luke warm after 20mins of waiting as the workers in between went to have their lunch. The young owner who dropped by had to rush himself to get them from the kitchen. This made the experience a little sour to an otherwise nice meal ladden with memories. Fish Thali - Rs.120/- Pompi Hotel, Demthring, Shillong Bengali Thalis $ 04.04.24 A few months back my mother, my aunt & I were driving towards Laitkor when we were stuck in traffic right infront of Pompi Hotel. It just so happened that the topic of discussion from Upper Nongthymmai onwards was regarding my eating habits & my Aunt pointed out towards Pompi Hotel saying that perhaps Kari has even eaten here. I had not even noticed Pompi Hotel till that very moment. Anyway those words kept ringing in my ears for the last few months & hence I'm here today. I stepped inside the eatery with a lady (wo)manning the counter. It was a basic looking thali place but much cleaner looking than what I had in mind. It had basic plastic chairs & tables but was spacious enough to eat comfortably. The menu on the wall had basically Thalis & some snacks like poori sabji & roti sabji along with tea. I ordered the fish Thali since it's a Bengali eatery. The food came within no time. It had a portion of ok quality rice, dal, aloo bhaji, mix veg dry, sidol chutney, papad, salad & a rather small piece of fish curry. The rice was slightly warm, the dal ok, but the veggies & fish had gone cold. I started eating & everything was just ok. The rice quality wasn't bad, the dal was seasoned well & had some panchpuron flavors, the fish curry had a decent taste to it, both the sabjis were not bad, the sidol chutney I didn't try. This is a no frills kind of place. And for 120 bucks, you can't expect anything more. This place gets customers from the shops nearby. So it fits the bill if you want to fill your stomachs (it's a refill thali), without burning your pockets. So it does it's job but I'm sure it would have been a better experience if the all the items were warmed up before serving. Hawaiian Sandwich - Rs.120 Green Tea - Rs.20 Coffee Sandwich Corner, G.S. Road, Police Bazaar, Shillong Vegetarian Sandwiches $$ 03.04.24 Today after some official work & a not so great lunch, I found myself in Police Bazaar at Coffee Sandwich Corner. I have been wanting to visit this place for a year now but its only today that I'm here. The place inside has a lot of other shops apart from the sandwich corner. The owner pointed it out that it is the first sandwich corner in Shillong. I had a look at the menu on the wall & they had different types of vegetarian sandwiches, hot beverages & french fries. I ordered a Hawaiian Sandwich with a cup of green tea. The sandwich was prepared right infront of me. I was expecting a sweeter sandwich but that wasn't so. The bread was a proper sandwich bread & had 3 slices of bread with 3 sauces with cabbage, tomatoes & other veggies. I took a bite & it was a really good mustard sauce based sandwich. I didn't miss any meat at all. It was served with ketchup. The owner came up & offered a home made garlic sauce as well. But it didn't go too well with the already spicy sandwich. The ketchup did the trick. I then asked for a cup of green tea. The owner asked if I have an insta account & I said yes. He brought the tea & said it was on the house as I was going to tag the food on insta. I was pleasantly surprised. I continue devouring my awesome sandwich. After I was done, I went up to make payment but was taken aback when he charged for the tea as well. I've never asked anything for free or any payments in any of my 997 food posts in the last 3 years, but when someone offers a complimentary tea, it feels nice. But then after being offered & getting charged, it just reduced the overall experience. Fish Thali - Rs.180/- (excl. delivery) 📍 Jireh Eatery, Nongshilliang, Malki, Shillong Indian & Chinese $$ 24.03.24 I usually don't have lunch on Sundays when I go to church so today after returning back, I was getting hungry a little earlier than usual. The food at home was not yet ready so I decided to order in. Now I noticed that @fatafat_shillong have resumed services in Shillong again. The last time I ordered through their app was in 2020. I browsed their app & noticed that there were a couple of listings which were not available on other apps. One was Jireh Eatery which is located at Nongshilliang Malki. I had a glance at their menu & ordered a Fish Thali. The order arrived after 50mins. The order was packed in aluminium containers except for the dal which was packed in a plastic container. The fish curry in the aluminium container was starting to leak. Anyway the thali meal consisted of ok quality rice, a decent dal, 2 small pieces of fish curry & mixed veg. The quantity of rice was generous, the dal had the perfect consistency & seasoning, the mixed veg was the best from the lot. It had enough of flavors without being doused in masalas. The fish curry was however found lacking in both quality & taste. The two small pieces of fish were fried & then hurriedly cooked in a watery tomato based gravy which lacked both flavors & seasoning. A simple fried fish would have done the job better. And for 180 bucks, this isn't the best deal considering what you are getting for it. Perhaps other dishes may be much better than this. So will have to try again next time. Plain Paratha with Sabji & Aachar - Rs.50 (excl.delivery) Cloud Kitchen, Polo Hills, Shillong Chinese, Indian, Snacks $$ 24.03.24 Today being a Sunday, I was sort of lazy to go out & look for breakfast. So I waited for Swiggy to open at 10am & started browsing. The first thing on my mind is that I should order from a place where it's not possible for me to visit, a Cloud Kitchen. And ironically there was a listing with that name itself & it was open. I ordered 2 plates of Plain Paratha with Sabji & Aachar. The listing showed that it is from Police Bazaar but when I was tracking the delivery executive, I realized that it was located in Polo Hills near Merrins Restaurant. Or perhaps it is Merrins Restaurant under a different guise. Anyway the order arrived in 40mins & Swiggy is pretty consistent with these timings. The food was packed in aluminium foils. Perhaps for the price, giving plastic containers was not feasible. Thankfully the sabji did not spill out too much. Anyway the order had 2 good sized Plain Parathas, a portion of Aloo Matar sabji with the Matar dominating the portions, Lime Achaar & a slice each of cucumber, onion, lemon & chilli. For 50 bucks, this looked pretty decent. I started eating & the 1st paratha was warm & ok, though a little on the thicker side. The aloo matar was smelling of khara masalas but taste wasn't too bad. The sweetness of the matar somehow did overcome all that masala. The pickle made things more interesting. When I got to the 2nd Paratha, things changed. The paratha had become cold & a little hard & was too thick. I heated it in the microwave & it became worse. I couldn't finish even half of it. Overall for 50 bucks plus some change, this is a decent breakfast or snack item. But you need to ensure that you consume it while it's warm. Mutton Haleem -Rs.258 Eden Special Murgh Handi Lazeez -Rs.394 Rumali Roti -Rs.49 Eden Special Firni -Rs.69 Eden Restaurant, Police Bazaar, Shillong Indian, Chinese, Mughlai $$$$ 23.03.24 I've always wanted to try out an Iftar spread, especially the Haleem. A couple of weeks ago I did see Eden Restaurant post an Iftar Box menu, but it was @dine_with_daniella_ 's reel a few days back that made me decide to go & try it today. With me is Erwin who was also excited to try the Haleem. It's been 5years since I last visited this place & it sure looked better than what I remembered. We took a table. We wanted the Eden Special Iftar Gift box. Sadly the boxes are only available if one pre-orders them before 3pm. It was 1:30pm. We were stumped. Fortunately, the à la carte menu was available. We ordered the Mutton Haleem, Murgh Handi Lazeez, Rumali Rotis & Firni. I didn't order the Galauti kebab since I've tried them before & they just didn't match up to the ones in Lucknow. The Haleem came with a bowl of Birista & lime. The murgh handi had 4 pcs of chicken cooked in a thick rich yoghurt sauce. The rumali rotis were hot & had a consistent thickness. The firni looked very appetizing. Anyway I added the birista to the haleem & squeezed the lime on top. I tore a piece of the roti & scooped out the haleem. This my first haleem & it just blew my mind. The pounded porridge like meat had such subtle flavors. The murgh handi was also nice & cooked well but didn't match up to the haleem. The firni was the best I've had in Shillong. It had a slight grainy texture, not too sweet, with a balanced saffron flavor. Erwin ordered a second one. This was a lovely intricate & delicious experience. Mutton Thali - Rs.170/- Grab Your Meal (G.Y.M), Pynthorbah Market, Shillong Indo-Chinese dishes & Indian Thalis $$ 20.03.24 Today I made my way up to Taste of Home for lunch but they were closed for renovations. Then all of a sudden I had an urge to have Jadoh, good Hot Jadoh. @human_serial__001 told me that Hot Jadoh had their stall in Pynthorumkhrah. So I reached the exact spot & there was no Hot Jadoh. In that same spot stood Grab Your Meal (GYM), a 7month old eatery serving Chinese dishes & Indian Thalis. I was hungry & decided on a Mutton Thali. I know I usually don't have good experiences with Mutton especially at new places, but then again its Mutton. The person doing the cooking @chisimpeter is a Goalpara Garo who has cooked in Pynursla, Nongpoh, Mawlynnong & now in Shillong. The thali took a little bit longer than I expected & came after 15mins. It had rice, dal, 3 pieces of mutton curry, aloo gobhi, aloo bhaji, papad & pudina chutney & onions & chillies. The rice was of decent quality. The dal was thin but not watery & well seasoned. The 3 pieces of mutton were good sizes & I was so glad that the meat was soft & tender. The curry was very tasty. The aloo gobhi was also nice. It did look less at first but when I asked for a 2nd helping, I got nice cauliflower pieces. The aloo bhaaji fried with mustard seeds was light & still warm. The pudina chutney added the freshness to the meal. It was also a refill thali. Service was good & I noticed the kitchen was kept pretty clean. Overall it was a good & unexpected meal. And I'm so happy to find these small hidden places that serve a good simple & hearty meal at reasonable prices. Godly Combo (1 Shapaley, 4 Chicken Momos, 2 Pork Momos & 1 Milk Tea) - Rs. 250/- That Momo Guy, The Evening Market, Ward's Lake, Shillong Nepalese, Momos $$ 18.03.23 Today me & @confi_.dan._ after watching Kung Fu Panda 4 decided to go check out The Evening Market at Ward's Lake. We thought it would close by 9pm so just enough for us to have a peek. But when we reached at 8:30pm, the timings were extended till 9:30pm. The place was nicely lit up. I have always found Ward's Lake to be tranquil & soothing. There was a stage with a band playing some very nice soulful music & a few food stalls. And well my eyes were on @thatmomoguyshillong . Their momos are gaining popularity & mind you they come straight from the Hills of Kalimpong. Both Dan & me opted for the Godly combo which had 1 Shapaley, 2 Pork & 4 Chicken momos & milk tea. They had ran out of tea & offered us 2 extra Chicken momos instead. I took a bite of the Shapaley. It was deep fried but wasn't dripping oil. The pastry had the perfect thickness that gave it a satisfying crunch. The chicken filling inside was tasty, though a little bit more of it would have been even better. The chicken momos had a very thin wrap & juices oozed out with each bite. For some people the amount of meat filling is detrimental to be a good momo, for me the thickness of the wrap & juiciness inside matters more. These had both. The pork momos were basically miniature versions of our Shillong bara momo. However, the quality is one of the best that I've had so far. The texture of the buns were light & soft & didn't reek of yeast. The filling was very nice & I was so glad that unlike the Shillong Pork momos, these had no skin. Overall, very satisfying. Chicken Thali - Rs.180/- Dish Alley, Nongmensong Market, Shillong Indian Thalis, Indo-Chinese $$ 16.03.24 Today after almost 2 years I find myself inside Dish Alley in Nongmensong. I found this place thanks to @iceshira who in 2021 after the Lockdown traced our favourite person who prepares Thalis in Shillong, Mr. Basumatary here. Before the Lockdown, he ran A.D. Foods near St. Peter's school & I would have lunch & evening parathas there almost everyday for 4-5 years. I have made a few visits here after 2021 but distance has not helped me to visit as frequently as I wanted. The place still looks the same as my last visit. But thanks to the erratic power outages, my shots were disturbed. I ordered a Chicken Thali as my favourite Fish Thali was not available. Even the mutton thali was missing today. The thali did not take time to come. It had rice, dal, 2 pieces of chicken curry, aloo rajma sabji, salad, chutney & papad. The thali looked pretty simple, scaled down & less colorful from how I remembered it to be. The rice was of average quality. The dal was okay. The chicken curry was tasty, but I felt the flavors had changed & the chicken pieces were small. The aloo rajma sabji was not bad. What I missed was their green fried veggies & baigan fry. Later I found out that Mr. Basumatary had left a year back to pursue his own business venture in his village. This thali by no means is bad & it does try it's best to emulate it's past, but only manages to be a shadow of its former glory. Also for what you get, Rs.180 is slightly pricy considering that even extra rice or dal is chargeable. Anyway the lady at the counter was pleasant, very attentive towards us without being intrusive. Hunan Fried Rice (Prawn) -Rs.160 Korean Bao Pork Buns -Rs.110 Blueberry Shake -Rs.60 44 Food Junction, Jyllishop, Shillong Fast Food, Korean, Chinese $ 13.03.24 Yesterday @human_serial__001 messaged me about a new place opening that very day. I was excited about visiting a place on their opening day, so after work I went but they had closed down since they had ran out of items. Later I saw @oscar_pyngrope 's post along with @benwankhar visiting the place so I reached out to them & they shared whatever details I required. Thanks guys. So today, I found myself inside the newly opened eatery. I met the co-owner @alexanderpassah . He basically is a Research Scholar on Anthropology & started this venture with his partner Bryan. I was told that Bryan has been cooking in a few cafes in town but wanted to start something of his own. The two met clicked & so while Bryan is incharge of the Kitchen, Alex manages the stall. The place was for the last 70 years a garage where a WWII heritage Willys Jeep used to be parked. Since the eatery has opened, the Jeep has been shifted to another location. I had a look at the menu & everything was reasonably priced. What caught my attention was the Gochujang & the Hunan Fried Rice. One was spicy Korean, the other sobre Chinese. After yesterday's spicy manipuri thali, I opted for the Chinese. I also ordered Korean Bao Pork Buns & a Blueberry Shake. The service was very quick. The Hunan fried rice had a Sunny side up on top & a decent portion of prawns. The flavors were milder than what it looked. I realised later that the rice quantity was alot when I started to eat the Baos. The pork was tender & flavorful. The pairing with the Cucumber worked well. The buns were a little more than bite size. But the blueberry shake was a nice surprise. Egg Paratha - Rs.90/- Mint Tea - Rs.60/- Woods Cafe, Bomfyle Road, Shillong Cafe, Snacks $ 10.03.24 A few hours after the Pizza lunch, I was again a little hungry & was looking for some tea & snacks. I remembered Woods Cafe at Bomfyle Road & thought I'd check it out. I did visit it once in the beginning of the year but I was informed that they were still closed & would tentatively open when the weather is warmer in mid Feb. I tried to reach out to them again but to no avail. So my excitement knew no bounds when I saw them finally open today. I stepped in to an open & very peaceful & relaxing atmosphere where tables & chairs were arranged outside. I sat down & soaked in the final minutes of the sun that day. Aunty who runs the place came forward & welcomed me. She told me that they had opened on 28th Feb. I had a look at their menu board & they were mostly snacks, exactly what I was looking for. Aunty's family have settled here since the past 42 years. They are a Punjabi family & so I knew I just couldn't go wrong with their stuffed parathas. I ordered something I've never tried before, an Egg Paratha thinking it would be an egg roll which hasn't been rolled over. Along with that I also asked for a cup of mint tea. I waited & admirably watched Aunty herself patiently prepare the Paratha. It was the perfect size for an evening snack. I was wrong about my expectations, it turned out that the egg was stuffed inside. It was served with butter & pickle. I took a bite & the paratha had the texture & consistency of a paneer paratha. I dipped it in the pickle & it was a match made in heaven. Perfect paratha. I could also taste the homely love added to it. The mint tea was a tea bag & was nice. Chicken Meatball Pizza (Small) -Rs.290/- Cold Coffee- Rs.100/- Belly Timber Cafe & Restaurant, Nongmensong, Shillong Cafe, Italian, Chinese $$$ 10.03.24 Tomorrow I'm joining back to work after a short hiatus so I wanted to use the day to cover food places that wouldn't have been possible for me on normal working days. So say hello to Belly Timber Cafe & Restaurant in Nongmensong. This is their second outlet after their Ladthalaboh cafe in Jowai. Infact this is from the same house as the ever so famous Pyrbot Jadoh Stall in Iewduh. I'm so happy to have made it on their 1st week of opening. I actually was going to check out another place a little further ahead, but thanks to @human_serial__001 for hinting me about this place. I stepped in to a very neat Cafe with a somewhat Parisian feel to it. It had very soothing decors & couple of tables outdoors as well. I asked for their menu. Since it was a warm sunny day, I ordered a Cold Coffee & a small Chicken Meatball Pizza. The last time I had a pizza was at Slice of Shillong last year. The food took about 15mins to arrive. The pizza had 4 slices with a crust which was almost thin crust but with still some density. The toppings had cheese, tomato sauce, onions, green bellpeppers & 2 meatballs cut into halves. I took a bite & it was definitely a very good pizza. The crust tasted fresh, not like your normal Domino's & Pizza Hut. The meatballs were tender & tasty. The pizza was prepared by the owner himself. I only wished the quantity of meat was a little more. I washed the pizza down over a glass of the Best Cold Coffee I have ever had in Shillong. You get to actually taste the sharp bitterness of the coffee with each sip. Service is very good. Prices on point.
