Diane Sonderegger shares this about her creative process, ”Working with clay is not work at all. It's fun. These days all my art is about fun. I make things that I find amusing or sometimes sarcastic. Clay can become anything you like, but it also requires that you make continuous choices and judgments about what shape it will have. Then it must be surrendered to the fire. Sometimes the results are exciting, sometimes disappointing. But it's always fun." Christine Connerly loves to explore nature and wildlife with a long lens and a felting needle. She roams the Humboldt beaches and forests with her camera to capture moments in the lives of flora and fauna. She plies her felting needle to create landscapes and portraits of birds and other creatures with wool. Trinidad Art Gallery is featuring the work of artists Jim Lowry and Matthew Gagliardi March 28th through April 25th. TAG is back to regular hours - 10am to 5pm everyday. Jim Lowry's photographs are inspired by local landscapes and he often expresses his visions in black and white. Lowry especially enjoys the freedom of expression and infinite possibilities that the digital process allows. He shares about his process, "This is modern photography and that involves extra interaction. However, these pictures are not produced by an AI (Artificial Intelligence). It's done by an HI (Human Intelligence). Most of glassblower Matthew Gagliardi's inspiration springs from geometric patterns and symmetry contained within the chaotic appearance in nature, as well as the relationship of capturing and transforming light. He strives to achieve clean lines, symmetric proportions and refined craftsmanship, using traditional glass-making techniques and tools. This month of March, Trinidad Art Gallery is featuring artists Loryn White and Patricia Sundgren Smith. Loryn White is a potter whose current work incorporates a new clay that she has been using for the last year or so. The color of this toasty brown clay, reminiscent of north coast beach sand, works well with the ocean-inspired themes she has been exploring. In the past, the flora and fauna of the north coast have always been a focal point in the artist's work. Lately she has been keeping things simple, letting the form of the piece, the color of the clay and the jade green glaze that breaks to blue speak for themselves. Patricia Sundgren Smith uses many techniques when creating her art. Her subjects vary widely too, from whales to otters to Pacific tree frogs. While the artist enjoys printmaking (etchings, linocuts, mezzotints and lithographs), she also draws using colored pencils on a variety of papers. A few years ago, Sundgren started incorporating collage in her work. Her early collages are images of ravens with decorative papers from around the world. Sundgren has expanded her subjects to include other birds, and this show will feature collages of condors and great blue herons. On this gorgeous blue sky Trinidad day, we are featuring the work of several of our newest gallery members. These 2-D artists employ different mediums and styles to express their wonderful creative spirits. Christine Connerly explores the beaches and forests of Humboldt County and with her camera, captures magical moments featuring local wildlife and scenery. In addition to photography, Christine creates felted wool paintings and mixed media collages. Rachael Robinson primarily works with oils, creating paintings inspired by Humboldt County’s majestic redwoods and beaches. In addition to landscapes, her subjects also include animals and people and her lush style spans from realism to semi-abstractions. Leslie Mahon-Russo’s multi layered, mixed media abstractions are music for the eyes. She applies cold wax, oil paints, powdered pigments and oil sticks to wood panels or oil paper. She then manipulates this rich blend of materials with paint knives, squeegees, brayers and bamboo sticks.
