The Shoshone Ice Caves are large archived lava tubes 15 miles north of Shoshone, Idaho. The caves stay cool enough for the ice inside them to remain frozen throughout the summer. In the days before refrigeration, this feature made Shoshone popular with travelers as “the only place for hundreds of miles where one could get a cold beer.”

The day before my birthday I drove down to Shoshone falls. Definitely would have been intense earlier in spring but I didn’t have the time to make the trek. Still worth the drive and hiking around the area tickled my geology loving heart. Trips like these make me realize, it’s okay to be alone. I actually really enjoy the freedom of picking up and just going, not having anyone to check in with or get approval from. Last weekend, over 140 families showed up at the Lincoln County Community Center to collect two brimming bags of food loaded with staples, fresh fruits and veggies, a ham, delicious home made tamales, home made cookies, as well as a special holiday candle and a gift certificate to the Farmhouse Grocery Store in Shoshone! Over 250 kiddos received a present and parents shopped a mountain of warm clothing, donated by our Wood River Valley Community. Thank you for making a difference, helping these families with a special meal, a warm coat and a present that brought smiles to so many faces! Shoshone Ice Caves, located near Shoshone, Idaho, are about 1,700 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 45 feet in height. Visitors will descend stairs through a collapsed section of the lava tube to a depth of 100 feet under the surface. One of the ice caves’ most unusual yet awesome features is it is a natural refrigerator. It works on an expansion and compression of its airflow, which is the same principle we use in modern refrigeration. The cave creates a living glacier in a lava desert. Its ice block is about 1,000 feet long and varies from 8 to 30 feet in depth. No matter how hot it is outside, the temperature drops as soon as you enter the cave. Temperatures vary from about 23 to 33 degrees all year round. Today we visited the Shoshone Ice Caves in Idaho. This cave was formed by a tiny volcano that is inactive now. The lava tubes from the volcano run through here, with one being the 2nd longest at 38 Miles long. The cave is around 28 degrees inside right now with the ice ranging from 8 to 15 feet thick! The water drips in from the ground above during the summer then freezes again in the winter making more ice, and a bunch of icicles. The bear bones were found many years ago when they were reviving the cave. They believe a mom and her cubs went in there to hibernate but couldn't get back out due to the ice and died. The skulls used to be there too but an ex employee stole them!
