I LOVE literacy centers! ….but it hasn’t always been that way. Yep, during my first years in the classroom literacy centers weren’t the best part of my day. I made a lot of not-so-great choices and learned from trial and error – sorry kids! 😅 ⚠️ One of the bigger mistakes I made in the early years was that I spent a lot of time planning and prepping activities, but I didn’t think enough about HOW they would be organized in my classroom. ‼️ Simply preparing the activities wasn’t enough! I love using our sound wall! A fun review activity we’ve been doing is picking a sound of the day. A student chooses the sound and we talk about where the sound is located on the sound wall and why. We review the articulation, spelling patterns, and frequency. Then we go right into dictation. A lesser-known fact is that those 26 letters make (at least!) 44 different sounds, known as phonemes. 💗 As teachers, our phonics instruction revolves around teaching our students the relationship between these sounds (phonemes) and the letter and letter combinations (graphemes) that are used to represent them. ❓️I often hear from teachers who have questions about the 44 phonemes. My favourite letter of the alphabet 😛 is responsible for the majority of the /k/ sounds we hear in words. How does this help our kids? Let me explain. If you have a sound wall in your classroom (if you don't yet - get on it asap) no doubt 'ch' will also be included in the /k/ section. Spotters are located on each side of the wall to prevent incidents with overhead communications lines. • This area lacked sound barriers, meaning the noise caused by the constant hum of tires against pavement has leaked into the adjoining residential area. These sound walls, erected using drilled caissons with prefabricated concrete posts and panels, will help drown out the din of the heavily-traveled interstate. My sound wall is one of my favorite parts of my classroom. However, I do only have the consonants up so that part is definitely a fail. I had “vowel town” up to start the year, but then midway through the year we had our smartboards replaced with TV’s (no complaints here) and my TV had to be put over my chalk board which was where my vowels are so now I need to figure out another way to display vowel town. Ideas are welcome! The students all have mini versions of the sound wall (consonants and vowel town) that they reference individually, I just don’t have the vowels displayed. However, let’s just admire these beautiful consonants in the meantime. To start the year, I have all of the sounds “locked” and as we introduce them, we unlock each sound. Y is a consonant at the beginning of a word or syllable- year, yes, beyond. Y is a vowel at the end of a one syllable word- fly, sky, my. Y is a vowel at the end of a two syllable word- candy, happy, twenty. Y is a vowel in the middle of a word or syllable with no other vowel- hymn, symbol, gym, myth. “Dentro” is an album created using the pipe organ and electronic audio processes. It is a work that explores the concept of the materiality of sound and the representation of space through it. The instrument was recorded with a contact microphone placed on various materials within the church where the organ is located, in the north west of Italy. The pulsating heart of the work consists of minimalist patterns that form the basis of each track. Four patterns, one for each piece, transform and repeat in loops through different timbres during recording and/or various subsequent processing, shaping the compositions. Furthermore, “Dentro” is a secular reflection on the sacred, its symbols, and how sound, in its materiality and melodies, can convey them. . . . It's been identified that due to a City of Melton planning error the Silverdale Sound wall was left of requirements and subsequently wasn't built. Residents have been living with this City of Melton error for 20+ years. Funding was allocated but last year councillors voted to remove the funding. This year's councillor budget submissions I have added the Silverdale Sound Wall to be fully funded and completed to rectify this council error. In order for the budget submission to be accepted and completed the majority of councillors will need to VOTE YES. 🧠 The Science of Reading tells us that for students to master the phonics skills you teach they first need direct instruction from you. Then, they need plenty of opportunities to practice specific phonics skills with you. Finally, they need time to practice and apply these skills on their own. ➡️ Students need to spend a lot of time practicing phonics skills. ‼️ According to Wiley Blevins, a new skill should be systematically and purposefully reviewed for four to six weeks after being introduced.
