•HIDDEN STORAGE• In this bathroom, I created additional storage for my clients toiletries, towels and cleaning products. At the same time, this doubled up as a concealed space for pipework and waste connections.  At only 320mm deep, this textured tall cabinet was specified so that it picked up on the same white Kitkat pattern on the mosaic tiles inside the bath area. The vertical linear pattern draws the eye up to the ceiling, making the room feel taller. With brass handles, the cabinet compliments the brass hardware throughout the room.  Behind the tall storage cabinet is all of the pipework and plumbing for the shower. This is all accessible via the plinth under the cabinet, and also on the other side of the wall at the back. So all plumbing can be serviced at any time, without removing any tiles.  The waste for the water takes the bath waste, as well as the washing machine waste water under the floor and outside. All of which has been carefully channelled out of the floor before it was screeded and tiled.  With the project management service, all of these details are carefully considered so the homeowner hasn’t got to think about it. Nice for a bit a peace of mind! •DESIGN COSTS• I get a lot of enquiries about bathrooms, and most prospective clients always ask “how much will it cost.” As with any design and managed service, I have a minimum spend on my bathrooms as within my service I only recommend good quality fixtures and fittings that are there to stand the test of time. They aren’t cheap, and so because of this we can’t and won’t ever compete with DIY stores. We have to put our name to it, and so for this reason it has to be quality, and quality isn’t cheap. A small bathroom starts at a minimum of £10,000 for the fixtures and fittings, labour and finishing. My design fee for these smaller style bathrooms starts from £750 + VAT, and my management fee starts from £1,000 + VAT.  This does include more than just the bathroom suite. This includes, lighting, flooring, paint, window treatments, textiles, mirrors, shelves, additional storage, styling accessories, and most importantly the labour of the bathroom fitters, plasterer, electrician, decorator, joiner and blind installers. •PROJECT MANAGEMENT• Feedback: Clifton Street, Bathroom “Sarah was hugely helpful in managing the multiple contractors that were needed to convert this room from a kitchen to a bathroom. She made sure that everything was completed within a short space of time, causing a minimum of disruption to family life. Everything was fully costed, with different options at different price points, which mean that I knew exactly what I would be spending from the start. There were no hidden extras or surprises along the way, and I really appreciated the transparency here. Sarah also kept me up-to-date on when the different contractors would be here, and made regular visits to make sure that everything was going to plan. •ROMAN BLIND• I’m a big fan of a Roman blind in a bathroom. With all those hard cold surfaces, the warmth and tactile nature of fabric is a welcome break. Within this golden scheme, I used an affordable fabric as we had two windows to dress in this bathroom. With it being groundfloor, we made them black out so my client has full privacy in the evening. This lovely fabric is called #enso by @villanovafabric and retails at £47.50 per metre. It has lovely of tessellating circles that all have a white embroidered negative space around their outline. This little bit of texture sits just perfectly against the high gloss #splash tiles by @claybrookstudio . This tone on tone of golds, ochre and wood creates a lovely harmonious scheme that feels balances and fresh. •BATHROOM LIGHTING• Finding the right lights for a bathroom can be tricky, especially when you need different IP ratings for different zones around the bath and sink. With the slope in the ceiling, we could only install a 50cm diameter mirror. With that in mind, the wall lights had to proportionally balance the visual either side. These were the perfect size brass lights at just 26cm tall. Using glass in the bathroom allows the subtle refractions from how the light hits the glass to create a texture on the smooth plastered walls. Playing with shadows and highlights really adds the drama in a subtle way. We always try and give our clients dimmable lighting in a bathroom so you have full control over the mood settings in the evening. As a family of 3, and two teenage lads to satisfy too, this new bathroom had a lot of hoops to jump through to please so many and hit my clients brief (and budget!) With a nod to the buildings Victorian heritage with the use of the Victorian Floor Tiles, this warm colour scheme uses accents of ochre yellow, golden oak, brass, white and a soft light peach throughout the room. Having drawer and storage space was really important in this space too, so we fitted a wall hung wooden cabinet and a tall boy cabinet next to the bath. To help prevent a build up of mildew, I also fitted a brass shelf for toiletries, and a set of 3 hooks for towels at the end of the bath. For a busy family, this helps keep the space clean and organised. With drying space limited, we doubled up on heating in this room so that there was a dedicated towel rail that’s sole use is for towel drying. Quite often when a towel rail is covered in towels, the heat output is restricted, so by having a separate radiator to heat the room was quite important. Usually we would have fitted underfloor heating, however my client didn’t want that so we opted for a separate radiator instead. •STORAGE• Happy Friday Instapeeps! The weekend has landed…again! This is the last image I’ll be sharing of the bathroom, this tiny little room has filled all 9 boxes on my grid over the past 2 weeks and I’ll be lovely to see all that colour fill my feed. Thought I’d leave it here with this one; this detail is all about storage. One of my big bares with showering in a bath is the “reach” for a towel whilst dripping all over the floor. So I always try and design the space with some storage for towels that prevent all the water dripping all over the floor. Along with the shelf with hooks, is the little side table. Love this little table. Whilst I’ve styled it with a plant for the photo, it’s really used for cups or tea or books when you’re having a soak in the bath. •NICHE• I absolutely love this photo…the graphics within this room are so beautifully aligned it’s a real joy to be in it. But this shot, this angle, this symmetry:::I love 🩵 🖤 🩵 When designing this bathroom, it was really important to me that all of the lights were dimmable. This now means that the homeowner has complete control over the light levels in this room. So if she wants a nice relaxing bath in the evening she can set the lights down low for the ultimate chill. Along with the lights is the accessibility for wine…I mean…shampoo! Having a little ledge at the end of the bath or in the wall means that you have space to store the things you need whilst all in reach. We centred the tap and waste so it doesn’t get covered in soap suds and shampoo, and went for a fixed shower screen panel for that ultimate graphical look. Everything centred. •THERMOSTATIC VALVE• Just want to take a minute to share an idea incase it comes in handy with those of you who might be designing your own bathroom. You don’t always need to position your thermostatic valve inside of a wet zone when designing the layout for your plumbing. On this room, we positioned it outside of the shower zone so you don’t get wet everytime you turn it on. It’s also not going to suffer with water damage over the years as it’s never going to have a build up of soap or cleaning products in contact with it. So it’s a win win! •WINDOW TREATMENTS• Wow what a day yesterday, hope you’re all ok and nothing was damaged in the crazy tornado that whipped through Notts! Here’s another photo from the bathroom we completed this month. The Roman blind was a match made in heaven with this fabric by @studioguk #marissa which featured all of the colours from this spring colour palette. Affordable yet stylish, the pill shape mirror and dimmable wall light came in at a bargain £220 which really makes a statement on this small bit of wall above the freestanding #ava vanity from @drench.co.uk . •ARTWORK - “Lola” by Sophie Darling• I can’t explain that feeling I get when I find a piece of artwork that sets the scene for my design. Often I sit in the office smiling at my computer, which must be a sight to behold for the passers by of my shop. The brief from my client was always to use a pastel blue within the scheme, however this piece of artwork by @sophie_darling_ has all of the pops of colour that I worked into the design, all in one piece. Colour in art is everything! ☀️ Named “Lola” this piece is printed onto a beautiful heavy weight paper and the colour within the print quality of the artwork is almost as good as a hand printed silk screen design. It was a real joy to frame and looks superb in my clients bathroom. I first fell in love with Sophie’s silk jackets, and knew at some point I would find an interior that worked with this type of design. Fresh, modern, intricate and colourful. •HEATED TOWEL RAIL• To create balance in the bathroom we wrapped the blue tile as a half band around the room. This design detail helps to blend the window sill into the room and creates a lovely graphical line to hold the intensity of the blue. To make the bathroom feel light and airy we painted the walls and ceiling in a soft warm white #wimbournewhite The add warmth and drama to the space we changed the heated towel rail to a taller Matt anthracite design so that the heat output was correct for the size of the room. We also added a little shelf above the towel rail to add a space on the “long lonely wall” for colour and accessories. This shelf also helped to balance the artwork by using the height of the accessories to offsetting the position of the artwork in correlation to the radiator. •STORAGE• Every girl needs storage. I don’t know why we need more than the lads, but we do. We have different creams for different needs. We have different hair products for different times of the year. Taking care of your body is taking care of your mind. So when it comes to storage, sometimes practicality takes over design. In smaller houses having drawer space is essential. So this little cabinet nestles into this corner perfectly! The tiles have a lovely soft matt aesthetic so to colour block this corner we chose a soft matt blue Ava cabinet by @drench.co.uk I wanted the cabinet and tiles to fade away into the same colour zone to create harmony and colour balance in the room. To warm the space and add energy to the cool calm blue I added an accent of yellow and peach. These two colours remind me of the sunset, which in itself makes me feel calm and relaxed. •BATHROOM DESIGN• Same bathroom...fresh new look. I love it when a new client comes to me and “want” colour. Colour has the ability to completely transform a space and make you feel happy and uplifted when in that space. So when Spruce Interiors does a bathroom, it becomes more than just a bathroom, it becomes a reflection of your personality and of you.  Without changing the plumbing, we worked with the existing layout but added in extra storage and lighting so that my client could control the mood of the room. Making the WC integrated means we could add in a shelf above the basin so my client had space around the window to style and dress is with candles and flowers.  Whether it be an invigorating shower in the morning, or a relaxing bath at night, we rewired the bathroom to have dimmable lighting within the niche, above the mirror and central pendant. Good bye horrible spotlights, hello to mood enhancing and feel good lighting! •FURNITURE LAYOUT• There’s a lot to be said for getting the best layout for your furniture. Moving a radiator out of the way is quite often the simplest way to maximise the space. By moving the radiator from the centre of the wall, to the left of the door we were able to rewire the electrics so that the Sky Glass TV could be hung centre of the new U Shape Sofa. By painting the door in the same colour as the wall, and choosing an anthracite vertical radiator it created a nice textural element to the wall space. Warm For Life were brilliant on this job, and really helped improve the heating system in this house. @warmforlife Originally my design also featured a built in ethanol fire with shelving either side for styling the wall with lots of lovely decorative items. The ethanol fire would have been a low level W1500 x H500 and set below the TV. It would have looked incredible.:.but sadly my client decided it wasn’t worth investing in as he isn’t planning on staying at this house for more than 5 years. •WINDOW TREATMENTS• There’s a lot to be said for beautifully made window treatments, that are both practically suitable and physically attractive. It’s always the one thing that baffles my clients when I work with them, as there is a lot to consider! Swipe right to see the before photos, where you’ll find a heavy lined curtain that are two different lengths. It made the room dark, there was wall space between the heavy wooden curtain poles and all that fabric gets in the way in the floor space. When I designed the U-Shape sofa, I left a 150mm void to the left side so that the curtains could glide effortlessly behind the sofa ensuring longevity of the room regardless of what sofa you have in the room. I also designed the curtain tracks so that they met in the middle, with a cord fitting inbetween them so that my client can operate them from one point. This ensures that when the curtains are drawn there’s no ugly gap between the edges of the curtains. The room was already a nice warm space, so my client didn’t want heavy lined curtains. With doors onto the garden, he has these doors open most of the summer months so the sheer curtains can dance around in the breeze. What he needed was fabric to stop the sun from bleaching the sofa and prevent the glare on the TV. By taking the curtains full width so that when they are drawn they create a wall of fabric. •ART• I recently discovered the amazing artist Ross Loveday who creates limited edition drypoint and carborundum prints. It’s such a fascinating process that really took me back to my university years when I played with this type of mark making. In drypoint and carborundum printmaking, the areas in the plate which hold ink are covered with a mixture of carborundum (a gritty sand-like substance) and glue. When dry that area retains ink and gives a rich velvety surface which can be drawn into or disturbed. Ross then draws directly into the plate using a sharp pointed steel tool which leaves a mark but also pushes up a furrow, similar to ploughing. When the plate is inked and wiped, both the inscribed mark and the furrow hold the ink, printing as a thick, soft line. This piece is called “Black Gold” and is printed onto a beautifully heavy weighted hand made paper with a natural edge. To honour the print the framers did a superb job of mounting the print onto a 6mm foam backing to make it feel like it’s floating inside the frame. We gave it a big border so that there is lots of white space behind it to really take in the stunning layers of ink and textured surface. Worthy of a share dedicated to art. •LIGHTING & FURNITURE• This room is all about the lights and that AMAZING sofa. Having back lighting behind the sofa that could be independently switched from the central pendant and down lights was a really important detail within the design. Being able to zone the lighting to create different moods throughout the day really changes how you use a space. These lights are by @liang_and_eimil and are made from individually placed glass rods. The Mist Pendant and Clarins Wall Lights sit really beautifully against the dark grey wall. I had the stunning one off piece of artwork by Ross Loveday framed locally in Beeston so that the proportions of the artwork held the space in the area of wall between the wall lights perfectly. The sofa was a bespoke design too, with the size and fabric being specified to fit the room perfectly. •LIVING ROOM• For anyone who knows me, and anyone who follows me on Instagram, you all know by now about my love for colour. However, when my client approached me about creating a grey living room, I had to get my head around a different way of thinking to ensure I delivered a room that was, well, grey but still lovely! Perhaps if I were colour blind it would have been easier! However to create depth in this room I had to rely on tones of grey white and black, against textured fabrics and carpets, and reflective surfaces found in glass and metal. One major change in this room was the removal of the fireplace. The original fireplace was fitted to the inside of the room so we were able to remove the brickwork and seal off the opening. With a few repairs to the floor, a full new electrical rewire, repositioning of the radiator and some plastering we were able to completely change the furniture layout in the room. •BESPOKE CABINETRY• Happy Friday all! It’s been a tough week this week, there’s been highs and lows, personal and business battles but at the end of it all I’m still here and still loving what I do. I’m done with the rain though, so much rain! 🌧️ I’m so ready for Spring sunshine now, are you?! It gives me great pleasure to help clients get the most out of their homes, and hopefully it shows in the work I deliver to them. This room has been one of my favourites and having a thankful client makes all the difference to my wellbeing too! So I’ll leave it here, the last photo of the kitchen. My favourite little spot in the room. The bespoke cabinetry I designed has an LED strip light rebated into it, and a distressed mirror fitted to the back. It’s only a small detail, but a good one as it catches the light from the garden and adds interest to the shelf. So happy Friday, have yourself a lovely day. •DINING AREA• My favourite corner in the whole house. I just love how this has changed. Swipe right for the before photos! We ripped out the old sink, altered the window size, fitted a bespoke cabinet around the boiler, added in a mirror and under cabinet light into the shelf area and added in a pendant light over the centre of the dining table. It’s amazing how different it feels in there now. •WINDOW SEAT• By repositioning the dining table by the window, we were able to make this cosy corner a real feature within the kitchen. Out with the sink, in it for the view! The old window was replaced with a beautiful sash window, and we increased the length of it to maximise the view of my clients fantastic urban jungle garden. We framed the window with decorative architraves and fitted the blind to the underside of the frame. By painting the window frame, sill, architraves, wall and skirting board all the same colour, it really enhanced the view out into the garden. Connecting the green of the garden, to the green of the kitchen makes the room feel bigger too. I chose a round walnut table with leather swivel dining chairs. The swivel function is a game changer in this room! Swivel means you can turn the chair to sit at it, rather than pulling the chair out, and it taking up valuable floor space. •MARBLE• The pairing between these oversized marble effect porcelain tiles and quartz countertops is everything. When fitting both of these surfaces with the same type of marble surface it really adds impact and drama to the space. In my stories there are a couple of videos of the countertops being templated and of the splash backs being cut and fitted. There is so much work that goes into getting details like this fitted perfectly. It’s all down to having an awesome team who confidently and skill fully handle these types of materials on a daily basis. The green of the cabinet doors, with the brass handles and taps sit beautifully against the marble. It’s classy without being overstated, it’s sophisticated without being excessive and yet it’s practical and hard wearing. With the countertops clear of clutter, and everything my client owns having a home that’s easy to find this kitchen looks beautiful on a daily basis! When designing the space, I paid special attention to all of the crockery and appliances that didn’t have a home before and designed the layout and cabinet to accommodate it all. The before and after are great on this project. It really goes to show that having the right cabinetry layout can really maximise the space. My clients over the moon with this space, and absolutely loves cooking in it. Brings me a lot of joy to know I’ve improved someone’s life and bought them happiness. •UNDER CABINET LIGHTING• When it comes to ambient lighting, a little bit of under cabinet LED strip lighting really does wonders. In the evening it’s so lovely in this space as the warm light illuminates all of the pretty marble and the light bounces off the brass handles and taps. We use a surface mounted extrusion track with diffuser cover to soften the light. This is hidden underneath the pelmet so it’s not visable to the eye. •4 in 1 BOILING WATER TAP• When working with smaller spaces, the aim is always to remove as much clutter from the countertop as possible. The less clutter there is, the easier it is to keep clean and organised. With this in mind, with my design work I always include electrics under the sink to future proof your kitchen. Whether you want it installing straight away, or want to come back to it in 6 months time once money and budget allows, having a boiling hot water tap is a game changer. This particular tap is a 4 in 1 tap, meaning you can filter your tap water and boil it all from the same tap! Ensuring that the plug socket and waste trap for the sink have enough space, we fitted all of this into a 600 base unit underneath a butler sink. The traditional design and the brushed brass finish looks beautiful against the dark forest green cabinets. With ceramic style handles it has a subtle nod to the Victorian age of the property without being overly dramatic. I love drinking filtered water. Buying expensive plastic spring water is so bad for the environment, and yet the tap water we have nowadays is so polluted with metal, chemicals and medication that it puts me off staying properly hydrated. We are supposed to drink 2L of water a day, that’s 365 plastic bottles per person in landfill every year, or 3650 per decade we exist per person. It’s just not sustainable. •KITCHEN DESIGN• When my client came to me wanting a new kitchen, it was clear that the current layout wasn’t making the most of the space. The previous owner had chopped the room about by removing the dividing wall where the access to the cellar used to be and they changed the shape of the staircase. Due to this there was a limited amount of wall space the kitchen could be sited in. By repositioning a vertical radiator upon the entrance into the room, we were able to install a tower block under the stairs that houses the refrigeration appliances, bin and microwave. To increase the countertop space we added in a pull out countertop above the oven to increase the countertop space for my client when serving up food to his friends. I chose a smooth matt modern shaker style door that was both contemporary and traditional. Dark green doors with all brass fittings set against a warm wooden floor and dark stained walnut furniture and staircase. •CLIENT FEEDBACK• Design: When I spoke with Sarah about getting a new kitchen and front room I thought I had a pretty clear idea about what I wanted, but she came up with a whole series of really clever ideas that has made the whole space work much better. I am really pleased with the end result: the rooms look beautiful, but more importantly, they work for me and how I want to use them perfectly. Expertise: In my view Sarah had exactly the right balance of extremely well-informed opinions, coupled with the ability to listen to my thoughts and adapt her ideas accordingly. When she thought I was wrong about some design idea, she said so and gave her reasons very clearly and persuasively. And invariably she was right. Customer Service: I have been extremely impressed with Sarah's customer service throughout. Throughout the project she was on hand to answer any and all questions I had, often going into enormous detail (videos explaining what she meant texted to me and so on). When anything went wrong, which inevitably it will with a complex project, Sarah was calm and clear, and took care to minimise the disruption to me. Workmanship: Everyone who worked on my project was friendly, polite and professional. They all turned up when they said they would, and did the work to an extremely high standard. Overall experience: It's been a great experience. •SPRAY FINISH• Good afternoon you lovely lot! What a peach of a weekend, I hope you had a good one catching up on life, mowing the lawn, batch cooking, out walking with friends... whatever you got into over the weekend I hope you loved it! Few more behind the scenes from me this week. It's been quite an interesting few months for me creating content thats a bit different from the usual finished interiors I show on here. I think its been nice for new clients coming on board, seeing what I get up to, as it helps to see how many stages and processes that are involved in bringing my design work to life! When I design built in cabinetry, I will most likely specify a sprayed finish so to get the optimum finish that is both hard wearing and quality. Whether its built in cabinetry into the alcoves of your living room, a window seat, understairs storage, or an upcyled piece of furniture you just can't beat the look and feel of freshly sprayed wood. When working with a room thats been freshly plastered, all new skirtings and architraves are fitted prior to the room being prepped for paint. Before the alcove cabinets are sprayed the walls are mist coated, woodwork caulked and sanded, and all architectural details such as doors and windows are sealed off with protective coverings. Between each coat, the decorator denibs the surface with a fine sandpaper to ensure that each coat that goes on lays on smoothly. This builds up the thickness of the paint to create a really opaque and solid surface. The cabinetry and mouldings are sprayed in situe, with the doors removed and sprayed in a separate room to ensure no overspray dust settles on the freshly sprayed surfaces. •RIP OUT• From signing off on the design, to starting the rip out there is usually a 6~8 week wait to ensure that all procurement of goods & materials needed to fulfill the design are ordered and have safely received.  A detailed project management plan is organised on your behalf with each day and week being carefully planned. All contractors are booked in well in advance to ensure that each phase between each trade is managed properly, giving enough time for plaster and paints to dry.  During the first fix phase, all contractors are closely managed by me to ensure that all elements of the overall design are considered. •LIGHTING• Happy Friday you beautiful people. Thank you for all the love and support this week. I love revealing photography of completed rooms, it can take months and months before we are ready for photos! But once it’s complete it’s so nice to reflect on the work, so I hope you’ve found it interesting finding out more about my design choices for this bedroom! Last up is lighting. Just wanted to say…don’t be scared of oversized lighting. Sometimes big lights can make your room feel even bigger. If you choose the wrong size light for the space it can feel lost and insignificant. This light is from from @liangandeimil and is made from a black steel frame and linen frame. There are 8 light bulbs in there so it omits a lovely warm glow to the ceiling. Before this light went in the room felt dark, but now this fixture omits enough light to fill the centre it feels really cosy in here at night. In a room, I always try and opt for 3 or 4 different light sources so that you always have the option of setting the mood depending on what you’re doing and the time of day or night. So that’s it from me this week. I’ll be sharing the living room in this house in a couple of weeks. •MATERIALS• One thing that I find deeply soothing in life is being surrounded by trees in a forest. This to me is therapy. It’s a place I feel calm and centred. When designing this room, I wanted to use as many natural textures and materials as I could do to create a rich tapestry of feelings within the bedroom. Cork has always fascinated me as a material, as a layer of bark on a tree it’s fast growing, recyclable and biodegradable. Using it as a wallpaper gives the walls an amazing 3D feel, with little flecks of copper shimmering in the light. It’s also sound and heat insulating making the room feel cosy and warm. Layered next to the cork is the wooden slatted panels in a lush smoked oak finish. •MIRROR• This is the first time Iv designed a vanity area like this, and I really love the results. I wanted the mirror to feel like the moon rising from the sea, big and expansive with that soft glow around it. By setting the wall hung vanity unit off the wall by 30mm it allowed for the mirror to drop down behind it. Fitted on a French cleat fixing which was all painted in black, it’s a secure way of fitting the unit to the wall but still allowing a space inbetween for the radius of the mirror to cut through the centre. In a room full of rectangles and linear details, I added more curved shapes in to the design with the mirror, vase, wall lights and central pendant. •DETAILS• Just a quick one this morning. A beautiful shot to start your day right. I love it when a space looks balanced, and it’s these details that I obsess about on a daily basis. The linear design of the media wall compliments the wall mounted sideboard. They both have the same linear surface pattern making it feel like they belong to one another. Those mitres! My joiner is a genius. That’s all him, not me. •MEDIA WALL• So much has changed on this wall. All subtle changes, but significant all the same. There were 3 things I hated about this wall, which were all things we changed so to make it feel beautiful to look at when laying in bed: 1. The massive TV leaning off the wall on its bracket. 2. The ugly aircon unit 3. The tiny little radiator By centralising the bed, and figuring out the optimum position for the bed, I wanted to create a focal point for the TV to be housed in. To stop the aircon unit from floating in the corner of the wall, we created an access panel to hide all of the pipes and ran the boxing in into the media wall so it felt balanced. By taking out the radiator under the window and the tiny radiator by the door, we added one big vertical radiator with a powerful BTU so it can effectively heat the room. From a design point of view this vertical panel design balanced with the cladded media wall and balanced the black colour of the vanity table. By painting the door in the same colour as the wall it allowed the view from this side of the room to be all about the media wall rather than fighting for attention. •FURNITURE ORIENTATION• The basic layout of this room hasn’t actually changed much. However specifying furniture that actually fit the space properly and compliment the colour palette is what makes it feel special. •The furniture compliments one another and works proportionally within the room, fitting the space and allowing adequate space to move freely around the room. •The bespoke bed is manufactured with suede and linen to compliment the other textiles in the room. The bed linen contrasts against the bed and brings forward the warm rust colour in the wallpaper. •The wall lights and central pendant have a synergy with one another with their use of linen and black metal. These things don’t happen by chance. They are the result of many days (and sometimes weeks!) of thorough research through a broad library of trusted suppliers and manufacturers. •DARK STAINED WOOD• I love a cosy corner, and this corner has it all. By wrapping the smoked oak cladding into the corner and adding a corner chair in a contrasting colour it added depth to the space. The design repeated this throughout the room with a walnut chest of drawers with black asymmetric handles with a textured cream piece of artwork fitted above. A dark mango wood lamp with taupe linen shade. Cork wallpaper with flecks of copper running through it with cream and rust coloured bedding set underneath. This subtle interchange of contrasting colours all set within a warm neutral colour palette create a harmonious rhythm throughout the room. I really loved working in this colour palette. There’s something really soothing about being inside a room with so much texture and natural materials. The linens, cork, wood and dried grasses really make you feel at ease. •BEDROOM DESIGN• Good morning Insta Folk, I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend. September and October are my favourite months, I love that hunkering down for the winter vibe. I spent my weekend harvesting the garden, batch cooking and painting the exterior of my house. We include it all, and even include a styling pack for those all important items that really pull the design together and make the room feel homely and well considered. Whilst understanding how your budget may look with the cost of labour for electrics, plastering, plastering decorating, and joinery; its also really important to get a grasp on how much your fixtures and fittings will cost. Those finishing touches are the elements of the room that you will engage with everyday, and so the colour and texture of the bath towel you step on to, is just as important as the mirror fitting your space perfectly. •COUPLE THERAPY• Whilst I'm just an Interior Designer, I often find that a tiny percentage of my design presentations will involve a little bit of therapy for couples who come to me. If my client is a couple, they will always have different ideas and preferences for the room. This is what makes us unique! During the presentation, I try and create an environment whereby you are both heard. As joint homeowners, it gives you both the opportunity to express your views and thoughts in a constructive and positive environment away from the home. Quite often having this focused environment can be really beneficial for smoothing out any conflicting design ideas. •DECISION MAKING• There are always practical implications of what each material will offer within your design. Each material you choose will change the overall aesthetic of the room, as well as it changing what money you have left in your budget. Using a designer will prevent you from making bad decisions that will cost you financially. By having multiple options to choose from, you are always in control of how much you spend. This curated palette is broadly researched to ensure its unique to your design brief, and that each option works with the overall colour palette. Some of us are really quick to make decisions, whilst others need to be shown all the options and have a little more time to mull it all over before making their final choice. The aim is to have all the options in front of you so you can make an informed choice. •STAGES OF DESIGN• From Enquiry to Finishing, projects can take between 6-12 months if we are working on 1-2 rooms in your home. Generally speaking I always have a 1-3 month waiting period on my design service as I have a limit on how many rooms and clients I will work with at any one time. So if you are considering any changes to your home next year just bare these timescales in mind! The lead time on my design work is always 6-8 weeks per room, as quite often I will be working on your project plus 2 other clients projects at the same time. This lead time gives me adequate time to source samples (paint / fabric / wallpaper), price up bespoke design features of furniture or cabinetry, get labour costs from all contractors involved, obtain prices for window treatments and flooring and last but not least pull your room scheme together ready for presentation. For me presenting a design with accurate prices is quite possible THE MOST important thing about my job. •CONNECTING SPACES • When my client called me a year after finishing other rooms in their house, I was delighted. Its so nice to work with clients who value your work, and are thankful for the service you provide. But what was even more lovely, was the room they wanted my help with!  This exquisite staircase spirals down into the basement where my client has this amazing space, which was all painted in magnolia and ready to be spruced up. They wanted a design that connected to the rest of the house, and that felt luxury.  When I think of luxury I think of the 1920s Art Deco era, and The Great Gatsby. Whilst this house was built in 2018, having that identity is what makes it so special. This stunning sweeping curved staircase was the initial inspiration for the bar. Using the same radius as the stairwell for the curve on the bar countertop.  For the hallway I chose a beautiful stone colour with a yellow grey undertone that complimented the stairs and stone floor perfectly. •SURVEY & MEASURE • During the survey I will use both laser and tape to measure your room, to ensure that all dimensions of the room have been documented in a sketch of your floorplan. This drawing is then used once we proceed to the Design Stage, and will be drawn up in AutoCAD ready for your new electrical and furniture floor plan layout. The more detailed the floor plan is at this stage, the better the design as we use the survey to make notes of ceiling heights, window sizes, sill heights, recesses in the room, sockets, switches and light positioning, door orientation, architectural details in the room that alter the shape or layout such as RSJs or concealed waste pipes. SURVEY & COLOUR CONSULTATION During the consultation I survey the room, and discuss your plans and aspirations for the space. We talk through your Pinterest board and personal "colour" objects to obtain a greater understanding of what Interior styles, colours and textures your drawn to.  During the consultation I also like to show you a pre selected range of fabrics, wallpapers or materials that I think you might like. This gives us the opportunity to look in more detail at the types of finishes that are currently on the market before any further research is undertaken. Spending extra time on these elements at the beginning ensures that you have had adequate time to mentally process what you want from the space.  Within 5-8 working days of the Consultation, a full written "Project Proposal" will be emailed to you with associated costs of the Interior Design package and suggested timescales. Attached to the email will also be the "Service Outline" which gives a detailed breakdown of the process and various stages so you can have a read before you agree to proceed.  All design work is offered on a 6-8 week lead time from Design to Presentation, so please bare this in mind when booking your consultation. •PINTEREST• What look and feel do you want from your room? What colours are you drawn to? What materials do you like the feel of?  After your initial Enquiry & Shop visit, you normally have a week or two to have a think about your space. During this time I always ask my clients to explore Pinterest, so that when I next see them they can communicate visually with me what they like, and more importantly what they don’t like! Once you have booked and paid for your Survey & Colour Consultation, a link inviting you to a board on Pinterest will be sent by Spruce Interiors. This is a private board, that we both have access to. You can pin as many images as you like, the more the better! You can even post pictures you have on your phone on the Pinterest board, or photos you take from magazines. Whichever way you prefer it, see it as an Inspiration folder and as visual guide to help you find your style.  Before the Consultation, I also ask you to gather things from around your home that you like the colour of. These objects might be small things like; a scalf, nail polish, a book jacket you like the illustration of or the typography, a bunch of flowers, your husbands tie, your favourite shirt or dress, a cushion. Before I visit your property and provide you with a full quotation, I always like to invite prospective clients down to the shop for an informal chat. This gives you a 15-30 minute time slot to have an informal chat with me about the service and to find out a little more how it works.  Ahead of the visit, I'll ask you to email me the following: •rough floorplan so I can see the layout of the room •4 photos taken of the room from each corner. Getting to know the service, and the processes involved from design to project management, are key to understand before you sign up to the service. Property renovation budgets and costs of services you will require are worth exploring 2-12 months ahead of when you are hoping to start your project, especially if you are considering a kitchen, bathroom, extension or knock through.  I only ever take on 3 clients at a time, and never work on more than 10 rooms at a time. So with this in mind I usually have a 2-4 month lead time on starting design work. If you are employing an architect, going through planning, employing a builder and are not sure where to start, feel free to enquire. •COLOUR THEORY• Without knowing it, everyones got a colour palette they’re drawn to. Whether it be cool or warm neutrals, vibrant spring or summer colours, autumnal colours, monochrome or clashing colours, we all have a preference on what makes our heart sing.  Quite often we wear these colours, and they are hidden inside our wardrobe. Some people don't feel brave enough to wear colour, or have never had the opportunity to explore colour. One of the things I love about my job is finding a colour palette that you makes you smile, and sometimes even introducing new colours to you that compliment the colours you already love.  Before the Consultation, I also ask you to gather things from around your home that you like the colour of. •WINDOW TREATMENTS• When choosing fabrics for roman blinds, roller blinds, sheer curtains, lined curtains, upholstery or cushions there are a lot of different factors that go into the final selection.  When choosing sheer fabrics, we look at the linen and viscose content, how open the weave is, the fabric width on the roll and the tone of the colour. Sheer curtains look stunning when hung on their own as floor to ceiling length curtains, or when paired as a double treatment with a lined curtain or roman blind. They soften the room, diffuse the light and are a popular choice with most clients.  When choosing fabric for lined curtains, we have to look at the thickness of the curtain and what kind of weight the track or pole would need to take. We look at the scale of the pattern, the pattern match on the fabric roll width, and whether it’s interlined or black out. Within the design we always show you 3-6 options which have been curated to make the decision making process simpler for you. When making floor to ceiling curtains there is usually 3x as much fabric required that for roman blinds, so the cost per m2 is just as important as the colour or texture.  To show you roughly what your window treatments might cost, we always give you a price on bespoke handmade curtains or blinds within the final design so that you can get a feel for what your budget looks like with accurate costs. The costs for window treatments will always include the costs for tracks or Silent Gliss curtain poles. This means you can think with your head and heart when choosing the right fabric for you and your home.  We work with all colours, patterns and brands and don't specify the same fabric twice. •IDEAS & CONCEPTS • With thousands of different paint colours, choosing the right brand, right colour and right product for your home can be really overwhelming. We work with all paint manufacturers from Little Greene, Farrow and Ball, Paint & Paper Library, Dulux, Craig & Rose, to Atelier Ellis.  The direction of the sun has a big impact on how colour changes at various points of day too, so getting a feel for the light levels in your home really helps eliminate certain colours from your colour palette. North and East facing rooms tend to feel much cooler, as they have blue light, where as South & West facing rooms tend to feel much warmer, with a yellow light. These subtle tones of blue and yellow, can be enough to make a warm grey look blue, or a taupe look green. Accent colours are really important in your chosen colour palette, as these colours are usually chosen to compliment or contrast within the design scheme. Often these accent colours will be picked up in cushions, rugs, lighting and styling accessories.  During the “Survey & Colour Consultation” we also go through the images you selected on Pinterest. With my support we will identify what you do and don't like within these images, and start to identify your sense of your style. •SHEER CURTAINS • The before and after of these windows is pretty impressive, and shows a great example of how sheer curtains can completely change the dynamic and vibe in a room. They diffuse the light and adds a beautiful glow to the room making it feel soft and romantic. These stunning sheer curtains are set off a Silent Gliss ceiling fixed track with an 80mm wave heading tape stitched into the top. This ensures that the curtains will never droop or sag. The design of the curtain track is also really important, the length of the track and where the stack back of the fabric will be positioned when they’re open. By extending the track so that the fabric stack back just touches the opening of the window reveal when fully back, means you get maximum view through the window. Rather than having a pair, we opted for a single stack on each window meaning that both the windows looked balanced when open. We always include window treatments within every Interior Design scheme that we do. That way you know you’re getting the right type of fabric, right colour, right style and size for the room.
