People often ask me what it is to be a Standby Prop, and well…that’s quite difficult to answer. For the most part, yes we deal with the props in action, working with the cast, the director, the DOP and operators, and assisting the standby art director in conveying a clear vision as the production designer had intended. Moving furniture and dressing for camera positions or for shot, fixing things, cleaning things, hiding things in shot. We are expected to be the master of everything not considered technical. When someone needs something doing but don’t know who to ask, they ask props. So when the director turns to you and says, “I want pigeons everywhere, and as our actor walks in to frame, they all fly off…” I replied “I got this”. Armed with a tub of birdseed (which I always request at the beginning of a job on location in a city) I went and rounded up a small group, which turned into a big group, which eventually became an armada of pigeons. Scattering seed in a line to get them all the way into shot, then as the actor walked In amongst them, they all flew off on cue. So I guess I can now put ‘pigeon wrangler’ down amongst my skills as a standby. 🕊️ #supervisingstandbyprop #standbyprops #props #setlife #onset #onlocation
