It’s turning into indoors weather, especially this coming week when temperatures drop 10degC (@theqvb one of my favourite buildings in the CBD) The Queen Victoria Building (abbreviated as the QVB) is a heritage-listed late 19thC building located in Sydney CBD, designed by architect George McRae, the Romanesque Revival building was constructed between 1893 and 1898. The domes were built by Ritchie Brothers, a steel and metal company that also built trains, trams and farm equipment. Designed as a marketplace, it was used for a variety of other purposes, underwent remodelling, and then restored and returned to its original use in the late 20thC. It is famous for its magnificent centre dome, intricate stained glass windows, quaint floor tiles and light filled atriums and archways. Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness. — Frank Gehry

60 Elizabeth Street, Sydney. . . The exterior of the building was designed in what has become known as the Interwar Skyscraper Gothic style. There were relatively few buildings erected in this style in Australia, which showed the influence of American skyscraper design of the 1920s, the most notable example of which was Howells and Hood’s Chicago Tribune Building of 1922-25. Indeed, this precedent was acknowledged in the Australian architectural press. The adaptation of Gothic embellishments and its inherent verticality was though appropriate as an expression of the height and vertical thrust of tall buildings in America during the 1920s. The major examples of this style of architecture in Sydney were designed and built between 1926 and 1930. This was the first version of this lens and some say the best. Rumour has it that every one of these lenses were produced at a loss.
