Coffee shop sketching Number 23: Keeping it local at the moment, and doing my thing in @lynwoodandco in Lechlade. A grey, rainy day, so the warmth and smells of brewing coffee were never more welcome. I come here lots - there's such a nice chilled vibe; always busy, but never too noisy. My favourite place to sit is at one of the 2 windows, looking out onto a bustling street. Today those seats were taken, so I sat further back and just sketched things around me. This was an impromptu breakfast treat with Niall - how lovely is that! I had the French toast with fruit and yogurt and Niall had the bacon sandwich - both delicious, as you can see from the clean plates. The #rivetoile redevelopment in Strasbourg is an impressive complex of reuse of former industrial buildings linked to port operations, commercial mall, apartment new buildings and water fronting public spaces. The complex also includes a cinema, and a large library. As always in French development active edges from buildings facades and terraces animate the space while promenades follow what is beautiful to look at -here the water-. Bikes, pedestrians and sometimes motorized vehicles share the space. We have a shared love of walking and a shared nosiness! Historically it was a leisure and privilege afforded to men who had the time and money to explore the cities they dwelled in. A few years back I read a book reclaiming the word flaneur (or flaneuse)- it made me realise how many people fought for the right of women to walk our streets alone, free of harassment (most of the time at least…) and to have the time and leisure to do so. Because for them to look like that at 3AM means they woke up at 1AM just to look pretty while traveling. I am equally amazed at men who show up at the airport looking like they just got out of bed, hair uncombed and shirts looking like pajamas. That meant they don’t care how they look .
