⚡ The meticulously construed, electronic landscape formed by sound installations in 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐢’s solo-exhibition 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑒 / 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐼’𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 are never about sound alone – or, indeed, sound is for Atoui so much more than our common sense-idea of it. By combining musical instruments, electronic devices and computers, as well as everyday objects, but also by experimenting with expanded forms of listening, Atoui engages with political and social questions. Through his experiments with sound, Atoui wants to break through the traditional power relations between sense and reason, sensitivity and language, technology and craft. As an alternative, he simultaneously invokes perception, intuition, action, interpretation, memory and imagination as the catalysts for personal expression and identity formation. In this way, Atoui’s sound installations create non-hierarchical learning environments, in which all these sensations and activities can be explored in a connected and egalitarian manner. In 𝑂𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 (2022), we find an installation comprised as if it were a living body: a network of tubes that connect a computer to a ventilator and various organ modules, seemingly acting as a brain, lungs, organs and a heart that interact to create mutually adaptive sounds. #klarapompidou met @jonasboets die met Man van vele oorlogen zijn eerste roman schreef, waarin een geschiedenisleraar de hoofdrol speelt. Hij is er tot zijn grote frustratie altijd bij als er ergens een oorlog op uitbreken staat. Het levert een interessante kijk op tijd en geschiedschrijving op. @a_hoste_a kwam het werk van #tarekatoui toelichten dat op dit moment te zien en vooral te horen is in #smakgentmuseum. Atoui onderzoekt manieren om geluid te beleven en gebruikt daarvoor onder andere nieuwe instrumenten die hij in samenwerking met anderen bedacht heeft, platenspelers, waterbekkens…you name it. Zondag is het #erfgoeddag en dan kan u in het #rijksarchiefgent een paar oorkondes gaan bekijken die u een blik geven op het leven in de middeleeuwen. 🎶 “𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔” (John Cage) Electro-acoustic composer and artist 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐢 is known for creating sonic-sculptural landscapes inspired by sound as well as images, matter, space, time, human actions and organic processes. Drawing on historical, anthropological, musicological and scientific research and embodied experiments, his musical objects and sonic installations interact with the context in which they are exhibited. In this way, they encourage activity in a myriad ways, not only stimulating the ear, but also invoking perception and tactility, creating rich experiences of stimuli and synergies which flow through hands, eyes and ears. Listening, in this way, becomes a creative activity that goes beyond the function of the ear alone, but needs the whole of the body. In 66 𝑆𝑜𝑓𝑡 𝐶𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑠 (2023), for example, 66 textile-covered panels are distributed throughout the exhibition space, on the ground, mounted on the wall or linked to other instruments from Atoui’s projects. Each of the panels has a different pattern, texture or colour. When touched, they emit a sound. In this way, the boundaries between what one hears, sees and feels constantly merge. Design development and production - the artist and electro acoustic composer Tarek Atoui initiated an ongoing cycle of research with sound and its perception. ‘Within’ is the principal series of artworks where sound is experienced through hearing, touch or sight questioning the way we hear, conceive, play and write music. It consists of 12 instruments for deaf and hearing persons, played by dozens of people to question their design and the way it produces sound. Tarek asked us to develop the last piece of this panel. ‘Wind House #1’ is a listening and performative room, a music instrument, and a wind gathering device. Based on Johannes Goebel’s wooden SubBass Prototone from the 80’s. Working like a flute, a strong air flow is splitted by the beveled board, producing deep tones that resonate into the whole body and surrounding space. Tarek Atoui presents "The Wind Harvesters" at the Thailand Biennale. "The Wind Harvesters" is an air circuit inspired by the water irrigation systems of rice fields in the area of Chiang Rai. It is made out of bamboo sections into which traditional wind instruments from the Akha and Lisu tribes were mounted and tuned by Atoui. A computer based composition translates the sound of the traditional wind instruments into water and hidden sound flows creating an intricate composition and listening situation for the audience. The artist also conceived the space of this composition and its elements as a hospitality and performance ground for the members of these tribes and other musicians during the time of the exhibition. Rirkrit Tiravanija and Gridthiya Gaweewong are the curators of the Thailand Biennale 2023, which features a diverse selection of Thai and international artists including Haegue Yang, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tarek Atoui. #TarekAtoui #ThailandBiennale @thailand_biennale

The experimental composition “The Wave” is layered with sounds recorded at the ports of Abu Dhabi, Athens, and Singapore, joined by nine instruments developed for the “WITHIN” project. 📄 타렉 아투이 <더 레인> 전시 ‘소리’란 물체의 진동에 의하여 생긴 음파가 귀에 전달되어 청각에 작용을 일으키는 공기의 파동을 지칭한다고 하는데요, 아티스트이자 작곡가인 타렉 아투이는 손의 움직임을 통해 전자석 센서를 작동시켜 다양한 음들을 창조해내는 사운드 퍼포먼스를 선보입니다. 그는 소리 기반 작업을 하는 아티스트로, 현재 세계 여러 전통악기 및 음악사 탐구를 바탕으로 직접 제작한 전자악기를 통해 모든 감각 기관을 통해 인식할 수 있는 방법들을 연구해오고 있다고 해요. <더 레인> 전시는 한국 전통 타악기를 매개로 ‘물’의 소리와 움직임을 탐구했다고 해요. 청자, 옹기, 짚 등을 음악에 도입시킬 수 있는 연결지점들을 모색하고 무영고, 대북, 장구, 꽹과리, 징 등 전통 타악기 위에 예술적 변형이 가해진 악기들이 전시회에 등장합니다. 북을 해체한 후 북피를 고무, 종이, 청자로 대체하거나 다른 악기나 오브제들을 조합하여 새로운 악기로 완성하고, 각각의 악기는 내장된 스피커, 북 위에 올려놓은 일상 오브제들의 진동, 기계화된 북채의 움직임 등을 통해 비전통적인 방법으로 소리를 내며 모두 모여 하나의 합주를 이루어요. 또 천장에서 내려오는 작품을 선보여 수직구조의 풍경들로 시각적 리듬감을 더하기도 했답니다. 4대 원소인 물,불,흙(땅),공기(바람) 중 <더 레인>에서는 물이 중추적인 역할을 해요. 플라스크에서 똑똑 떨어지는 물방울 소리, 수중마이크로 들려오는 물소리 그리고 아투이가 작곡한 전자음이 합쳐져 악기들의 합주는 빗소리와 같고, 북의 울림을 천둥을 연상시키기도 해요. 그 외에도 기계장치와 더불어 바람, 열 등을 사용해 연주자가 부재한 상황에서도 4대 원소들이 연주를 주도하는 점이 참 인상깊었습니다. 관객자들이 직접 청자, 나뭇가지 등으로 만든 다양한 오브제들을 연주하여 자기만의 소리를 찾아나갈 수 있는 열린 공간이 마련되어 있기도 했었어요. 그 공간에서 저도 오래 머물며 다양한 소리에 집중해볼 수 있었어요. 우리나라 전통 타악기를 기초로 새로운 형태와 소리의 악기를 구현한 이번 전시. 청각 이외에도 소리를 인지할 수 있는 다양한 감각적 방법들과 마주할 수 있었던 참 의미 있는 전시였습니다. #타렉아투이 #타렉아투이_더레인 #전통악기 #전자음악 #퓨전음악 #소리 #음파 #작곡가 #전통 #타악기 #전시회 #전시회추천 #선재아트센터 #tarekatoui #therain #유아교육 #놀이중심교육과정 #레지오 #감각 #활동

I want to create a few posts relating to experiencing some engaging work @thailand_biennale in Chiang Rai last week. The exposition is taking place all over the Chiang Rai area often at beautiful historical places. The following work was at the Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park. Tarek Atoui Born in Beirut, 1980. Lives and works in Paris. He created a sound and object installation after interacting with indigenous local groups. “The Wind Harvesters is an air circuit inspired by the water irrigation systems of rice fields in the area of Chiang Rai. It is made out of bamboo sections into which traditional wind instruments from the Akha and Lisu tribes were mounted and tuned by Atoui, the musicians and the instrument makers from these communities.” It also utilizes electric blowers to create the sounds of air flowing through the bamboo. The second piece is by Japanese artist Ryusuke Kido. He created this structure from salvaged teak and the description continues- “Kido collaborated with local craftsman, Kamjan Yano to create the exquisite sculpture entitled, Inner Light - Chiang Rai Rice Barn. The artist carves a rice barn from 80-year-old teak, retired from peasant culture. The sculpture appears as if it were being eroded by viruses or bacteria, creating interior and exterior spaces that blur the boundary of form. 🚪🪑 타렉 아투이: 더 레인 아트선재센터 23. 11. 3. - 24. 1. 21. 공간 하나를 점유해서일까, 광주비엔날레에서 봤던 작품보다 훨씬 강렬했다. 위에서 떨어지듯 걸려있는 설치물과 큰 원형 설치는 해와 달, 비 같은 자연적 도상을 떠올리게 했다. 작품과 설치에서 전반적으로 원형, 사각형의 구조가 두드러지며 공간 전체가 하나의 기하학적 추상화처럼 감각되었다. 한 곳에 머무르며 시간차를 두고 곳곳에서 들려오는 소리를 조용히 감상하다가, 그 소리를 찾아가기도 하고 서로 다른 악기의 표면과 표면이 맞닿으며 나는 소리의 편차를 살펴보기도 했다. 악기를 볼 때 어떤 소리든 연주해보고 싶은 근원적인 충동이 일었는데, 1층 그라운드 공간에서 설치물을 만져보며 그 충동을 조금은 해결할 수 있었다.

Tarek Atoui will perform at IAC, Institut d'Art Contemporain in Villeurbanne / Rhône-Alpes, France. In this large-scale collaborative performance —supported by GRAME (Générateur de Ressources et d'Activités Musicales Exploratoires)— Jérôme Bertholon, Nolwenn Guéhenneux, Johann Philippe, and Yui Sakagoshi will join Tarek Atoui to experiment with his instrument-like creations. #sydney Tarek Atoui: Waters’ Witness exhibition at the @mca_australia is a calming and reflective exhibition. Whilst it may look simple, the mix of striking sculptural pieces and immersive sounds based on the acoustic identities of port cities from Athens to Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut, Porto, Istanbul and now Sydney is actually quite interesting to listen to. We liked the water sounds the best. Kids can sit on sculptural pieces (no standing) and walk around, observe and listen. Just no touching of electronic pieces.
