๐ Annual SCBA Fit Test for the win! ๐ All suppression personnel recently completed annual self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) fit testing. The test consists of exercises and assessments to ensure a tight, leakproof seal for the SCBA mask, which protects our firefighters when they are in toxic environments. The Carlsbad Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is geared up for the stormy weather after recently completing winter weather preparedness training! ๐จ๐ช Our very own Assistant Director of Emergency Services Kim Young partnered with National Weather Service (@NWS) Meteorologist Alex Tardy to provide the group with invaluable storm safety insights! ๐ง๏ธ CERT is a nationally supported, locally implemented initiative that teaches community volunteers how to better prepare for hazards that may impact their communities. ๐ Today is International Overdose Awareness Day! ๐ค Community Health Nurse Chrissy Gilmore was at the last city council meeting to accept the proclamation. ๐ช Thanks to partnerships with first responders, regional programs, local school districts and the community, we've made strides in overdose prevention by focusing on education, training and awareness. ๐ Last year, our fire department joined the state's naloxone distribution program, training paramedics and EMTs to provide help on the spot. We've also provided education and training to high school staff, parents, and students about overdoses and naloxone. We're proud of the efforts our community has made to combat the global opioid crisis. We recently collaborated with Parks & Recreation pool lifeguards to teach and certify Public Works staff in CPR. ๐๐ป Performing CPR before first responders arrive gives someone in cardiac arrest a higher chance of survival. Our instructors taught the class to perform compressions at 100 beats per minute. This is the same as performing compressions to the beat of the song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees! ๐ถ๐Swipe to the end to see how itโs done! This type of cross-departmental training is great because it allows more city employees to become CPR certified. April is National Volunteer Month and weโd like to congratulate the 24 recent graduates of the Carlsbad Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy! The 10-week academy consists of training in basic first-aid, search and rescue, small fire suppression, and emergency preparedness. CERT volunteers assist the Carlsbad community in emergency preparedness and response. When large-scale incidents occur, CERT is ready to provide neighbor-helping-neighbor assistance.
