🇨🇭 Heute steht eine geführte Wanderung auf dem Klippenpfad The Gobbins auf dem Programm, der ursprünglich vom Ingenieur Berkeley Dean Wise entworfen und 1902 gebaut wurde. 👍 Da Gypsie und Mia nicht mitkommen dürfen, unternehmen wir vorher mit ihnen eine rund einstündige Wanderung zum Blackhead-Leuchtturm und zurück. 🐾 Danach fahren wir zum Besucherzentrum, wo wir vom Tourbegleiter empfangen werden und eine Sicherheitseinweisung und einen Helm erhalten. ⛑️ Der schmale Weg führt entlang der dramatischen Steilküste, über Brücken und in die Klippen gehauene Stufen, und in Höhlen, die einst Schmugglern als Versteck dienten. 🏞 Nach diesem fantastischen Erlebnis geht die Fahrt weiter nach Carrickfergus. Wir schlendern durch den Hafen und sehen uns die Burg von aussen an. 🏰 Unser letztes Ziel ist Belfast, die Hauptstadt Nordirlands und das Ende der Causeway Coustal Route. 🏙 Wir bummeln durch die Einkaufsstrassen, bevor wir in der White's Tavern, dem ältesten Pub Belfasts, landen und Live-Musik geniessen. 🎤 🇬🇧 Today's program includes a guided hike on The Gobbins cliff path, which was originally designed by engineer Berkeley Dean Wise and built in 1902. 👍 As Gypsie and Mia are not allowed to come with us, we take them on a one-hour hike to the Blackhead Lighthouse and back. 🐾 We then drive to the visitor center, where we are welcomed by the tour guide and given a safety briefing and a helmet. ⛑️ The narrow path leads along the dramatic cliffs, over bridges and steps carved into the cliffs, and into caves that once served as hiding places for smugglers. 🏞 After this fantastic experience, the journey continues to Carrickfergus. Usually it was the weather, as you probably know weather in Ireland could be quite unpredictable at times. It was lashing on our way to Islanmagee Peninsula but look at it now! 🌞🩵💙 The Gobbins hike took us approximately 2,5 hrs and I have to admit it wasn't the easiest hike due to steep steps, narrow passways, uneven and wet surface. But I can assure you it was worth it. I didn't bring my camera with me as you're not supposed to carry a backpack or a bag with you to the cliffs. The Gobbins Cliff Path, Northern Ireland. Berkeley Deane Wise, an engineer from Co.Wexford designed and oversaw construction of the cliff walk. Construction began in 1901, and the first section – a pathway from the nearby village of Ballystrudder to the base of the cliffs – opened in August 1902. Steel girder bridges built in Belfast were brought to Whitehead on barges and manoeuvred up the coast on rafts. Workers winched them into place on lines dropped from the clifftop. Thousands of people visited The Gobbins in the first few decades of the 20th century. Until the path was closed in 1954 due to a lack of materials and resources for its restoration and upkeep. Restoration work was carried out between 2011-2015. A series of new bridges and galleries were constructed and installed during 2014–15.
