After been taken out by a migraine for most of this week its nice to finally be getting round to welcoming in the Equinox. I've just finished blending my cleansing smoke for our Priestess ceremony tonight. For the last 12 months I've been learning how to make ceremonial smokes based on the indigenous herbs and wisdom of the British Isles. These practices of gathering herbs (at just the right time) drying them, and then blending them in ritual to make ceremonial smoke has been one of the most magical journeys and one that has deeply connected me to my ancestors. The most well known piece of modern occultism: Tarot We can trace the origins of tarot back to the 1400’s between France and Italy, but we do not have precise knowledge on the origins of it. The most well known tarot deck is the Rider Waite deck that originated in England, however I will be talking about the Tarot deck of Marseille which is known as the first tarot deck known to man and the work that I’m mostly familiar with. The main deck is composed of 22 major arcana cards, each one with a cryptic meaning that comes in several forms, we can look into the number of the arcane and match it with the Hebrew numbers (the cards were created with numerology in mind), we can look into the art itself of the card for answers, and we can look at how the rest of the cards are tying into this specific card to give it a contextualized meaning. The cards do not tell the future, the cards are a reflection of thyself and our energies, so when we look into this searching for answers, we have to make sure the questions are for us. The mage is the first card in the Marseille deck, as opposed to the fool being the first card in Riter Waite’s work. The mage is to represent initiation, it is to represent the creativity, innovation, and action of the human mind. The number associated to this card in Hebrew would be Aleph, which is the first letter of the alphabet that also can be used to represent the number 1. The mage has a shape that similar to aleph, and each of the cards in the major arcana share this trait. The mage has several tools in front of him, tools commonly used in the Jewish practice of circumcision. This ritual is to represent the pact and connection between god and men, and is performed on the eight day of the child being born. The number eight is associated with the mystical and divine, whilst the number seven is associated with logic. The view from my seat at Ravenwood on Sunday. Since March this year I've spent one Sunday each month at Ravenwood enrolled on The Mage course. This course has been absolutely incredible and I'm sad that there's only a few months left. Walking the path of the Mage has felt deeply ancestral and incredibly healing from a past life point of view. Learning to work with plants and trees in a magical way has felt so empowering but also so triggering from a witch wound perspective - knowing that these practices would have got you killed and feeling the lingering effects of the burning times. There's so much to heal and so much to reclaim. . . This Sunday we were learning about elementals and how to blend sacred smokes for working with them. On Monday I spent a very contented few hours in my therapy room making up these smoke recipes, my hands were sticky with incense resin, my finger nails black with storax, the floor covered in herbs and my clothes smelling of essential oils and smoke...I was one very happy Mage! artist, arcanist, ascendant. entering my arcane era 🌙 ~~ so excited to share more of the photos @courtneymartinart took back from our summer shoot - i look incredible and *chef's kiss* so magical. inspired by the intensity of @theresafractale's high fantasy photography, i wanted to embody this hugely transitional time in my life by portraying myself as an oracle card from my personal deck, The Mage. it is a symbol of change, disruption, controversy - a sign of new times to come. to honor my family and my heritage while subverting expectations, i chose to wear an #aodai in a non-traditional way, layering it with hand painted shawls and scarves of my own design. as my crown, a #khandong as a symbol of ascendancy to mirror traditional religious iconography. i have in hand two major symbols from my work: first, incense as part of the ritual, meditative nature of my process. second, a new painting from my newest body of work, a sacred incantation turned scroll, capturing a secret arcane script divined specially for this piece. i may have gone a little nuts for the mood board 😆 i had so much fun dreaming up this shoot and working with courtney to bring it to life. she did such an incredible job, please send her your love!
