The Palos Verdes Peninsula is a geographical marvel hidden in plain sight at the southwest corner of the LA metro. Offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean atop bountiful bluffs, this is the place for the South Bay's best hiking opportunities. It's the picturesque paradigm of Southern California scenery, which is becoming more spread out from the city given the region's sprawling concrete development. If stepping away from this hustle and bustle is what you're looking for, but you still want access to the city, then opt for a trip to the peninsula over the more popular choices like Malibu. You don't have to leave the county to enjoy a stunning coastal cliff sunset, and once you experience the aura of its inspiring setting, you won't want to. El Segundo, just south of LAX, represents a diverse blend of South Bay industry, entertainment, and history. Named after the fact that it was chosen as the location of California's second oil refinery, this beachside town is a unique part of Southern California. It's the only city in America home to practice facilities for three professional sports teams (Kings, Lakers, Chargers). The city blossoms with business parks and corporate infrastructure that integrates a professional charm, given its proximity to LAX, which makes this a very business-oriented community. Also home to the LA Times, Boeing, and Mattel, among others, this relatively small city packs a pretty big punch. Nicknamed the "Aerospace Capital of the World," it doesn't take long to realize this is a city with deep roots in aviation. This city hosts the largest satellite factory in the world, and furthermore is home to a vibrant economic sector that incorporates energy, real estate, and bioscience as well. Being so close to the airport, there are numerous hotels lining Pacific Coast Highway and a unique automobile museum showcasing vintage cars. Let's not forget about the beach, of which El Segundo offers a quiet, more secluded option for those looking to break away from the tourist traps in Venice and Santa Monica. And the city's downtown? Cozy and surprising, with plenty of unique places to explore. From Japanese markets to the historic Roadium Open Air Market, there's a lot more here than meets the eye. You may not expect to find two significant casinos or one of the metro's only 2D cafes, or perhaps the location of the Beach Boys' childhood home. Or the SpaceX headquarters, the launching pad for LA helicopter tours, or the market where Dr. Dre regularly sold mixtapes back in the 1980s. Yet, all these things are within walking distance, in a relatively undiscovered part of the metro that deserves some more attention. Wilmington probably doesn't strike you as a place that's in Los Angeles... but in fact, it's an LA city neighborhood in the harbor gateway region of the South Bay. Possibly the least known of LA's neighborhoods, Wilmington has a largely industrial history, as almost one-fourth of its land area is made up of oil refineries. This means that while it's technically an oceanfront community, it does not exude the archetypal characteristics of one. You're not going to find beaches, promenades, or a crisp view of the ocean here. This is not a place where you will see the scenery and lifestyle typically associated with LA, nor is it a place that has any obvious appeal to a visitor. It's a robust industrial landscape, which unfortunately suffers from high air pollution due to the refineries and heavy port traffic - a facet its residents live with on a daily basis. The fact is that Wilmington is essential for the nation's economy - it processes over half the county's oil and facilitates land transport for goods arriving from the Port of Los Angeles to the rest of the US. But what does this industrial focus mean for the people who live here? That question is worth exploring as it exposes some socioeconomic disparities in LA that most people never see. Still home to key places like the Banning Museum and Drum Barracks, Wilmington is one of LA's oldest communities that offers some historical insight you won't find elsewhere. A city that embodies the heart of the South Bay's economic and cultural character, Torrance represents the key differences between this region and Los Angeles. While LA is known to be boisterous, dense, and blossoming day and night in the entertainment sector, Torrance is quieter, low-key, and is laid out more like a suburban city despite still being contained in the sprawl. Exploring this city is best done by car, but as we've recently proven, you can still cover the city on foot! When it comes to hidden gems, you do need to dive deeper here to really make the most of this area. That's where I come in to help! Torrance's standout element is the Japanese culture that abounds throughout the city. You'll find unique offerings here that aren't elsewhere in LA, like a snack shop dedicated to Japanese chestnuts. Mitsuwa Marketplace is the place to be for a full Japanese food court - it's much more than sushi and sashimi here. Try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, yakitori, high-quality matcha and other teas, and Japanese sweets like yoku moku cookies, mochi, and wagashi. Think that Little Tokyo and Sawtelle are LA's only concentrations of Japanese influence? Think again. That's all of Torrance. The city still has its historic old town intact (pictured above), with some local shops and restaurants revitalizing this once economically central district. Nowadays, the city's industry is quite balanced, spread among the many business parks and corporate buildings scattered around the car-oriented landscape. It's a very different feel than elsewhere in LA metro - a suburban feel but still retaining just as much cultural diversity as elsewhere in the region.
