This weekend, Xilo and I will have been together for a year. Next week, I will watch him graduate with his second masters degree— how do I even begin to explain the depth of respect, admiration, and love I have for this person? Loving Xilo, a man who is so deeply committed to introspection, growth, inner connectivity, and healing, has meant reckoning with parts of myself that were very hard to confront. I started therapy, I left a job that was leeching my light and my self worth, I started to see my gender and neurodivergence with an acceptance and clarity I never expected. I am not just a better person for him now than I was a year ago, I’m better for myself, I’m better for the world I’m in and the work that I do. But Xilo doesn’t exist just to lift me up, he is a light all on his own. He’s not just a list of experiences and accomplishments, (though he has many), he is not just a good friend and son and partner (though he is), not just a whip smart expert in education and social work (though that’s unarguable fact), Xilo is a singularly remarkable spirit whose humor and generosity and complexity makes me feel almost stupidly lucky whenever we’re in a room together. Have found this week the hardest so far in my weight loss journey. Didn’t completely lose the momentum, but didn’t feel in control as much as I have done. Brain still constantly buzzes around what options we have for starting our family, what we can make work and what we can’t. It feels like at basically every avenue, we’re made to feel like being overweight is the worst thing we could be! We know we’re more than capable of creating a safe and loving space for a child. One of the comments we had when discussing adoption, was that they need to make sure we can offer a healthy lifestyle to a child. It really had me thinking, would they quiz a thin couple on this? Quiet week from us as we’re away from home visiting family. We’ve parked our conversations about our family journey a little bit for now. Give our mind a bit of a rest. Defeated. A social worker from our local adoption agency came to visit us at our home yesterday for an ‘informal chat’. To be honest it’s really made us pull back from the option. It gave us a lot to think about. We know every part of our life would be scrutinised and understood that, but the reality of that is very jarring. It already felt like our weight was going to be a big concern. We honestly don’t know now if we could go through the intense process, just to not be approved based on this. Which is really upsetting and frustrating when we know we could give a child a safe and loving home 😢 It’s thrown us back into focusing on our donor insemination and maybe accepting that this is our only option.
