ARC Review: These Shallow Waters by Madison Mouser (Firstly we aren’t going to judge my photoshop skills because I have none so this is what you get, ok thanks) ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨3.5 (rounded to 4 on GoodReads) Overall - I really loved this book! I love mythology, but tend to stick to more mainstream mythology stories so this was such a refreshing read and now actually has me digging into the mythology of Selkies more 🙈 Ellie - our FMC - had some good sass and while she had some moments that made me go “uh girl are you ok???” She also had several moments that made me clap for her as well. Lawson - our MMC - is a loner who is just trying his best given his circumstances and the trauma he’s dealing (or is he) with! Maybe I’m a hater - but some parts of this story just moved too quickly for me. Several things HAD to happen due to a time crunch within the story and those I understood - but some of the emotional aspects just kind of hit me out of nowhere and didn’t seem… right? There were also some things that were brought up but we didn’t get answers to??? Maybe intentionally bc we’ll get those answers in another book, but some just got brought up once/twice and then never again. Again, maybe I’m just a hater - I am also not a patient person so I want answers asap always lol 😂 Anyways!! If you like quick reads about different mythological creatures - These Shallow Waters is out May 1st! I can’t believe we’re already halfway through our Wolves course, with just seven weeks left. Starting my week with the Wolves tribe has definitely been a highlight for me! Tonight’s story is “Sealskin, Soulskin,” featuring one of my favorite mythological creatures, the Selkie, from Irish and Scottish folklore. Selkies are seals that can shed their skins to become human. Donning their seal pelts allows them to return to the water. Typically, the tales involve someone stealing a female Selkie’s coat, preventing her return to the sea—sometimes it’s her lover, other times her child, culture, or family. However, as soon as she retrieves her pelt, she returns to the sea. Dr. Estés interprets this myth as a powerful reminder to all of us to maintain contact with what our soul truly needs. For the Selkie, that’s the sea. The story serves as a metaphor for the various things in life that can distance us from our true nature and deepest needs.
