Mille Fiori 2024 Well this is the last shot from my visit to the Biltmore. Biltmore you say? That’s right, when we were there the Biltmore had an exhibition going on of Dale Chihuly’s unbelievable glass art. For those not in the know, Dale Chihuly is America’s, and probably the world’s, preeminent glass artist. Of course if you follow me you already know this since I posted extensively about Chihuly last fall after our trip to Seattle (his home stomping grounds). Now I have to admit as to being slightly disappointed with this Chihuly exhibit. Not because of the work itself (I mean just look at this photo, the work is amazingly intricate and fascinating). No, it’s just because I had my expectations up. In 2018 there was an exhit of Chihuly’s at the Biltmore where the works were scattered all throughout the garden and the mansion. This time around almost every thing was displayed in the their exhibition hall on the property (there was one piece set up right outside the mansion but it came off as kind of sad in comparison to photos I’ve seen of the 2018 display). But enough of my whining. Instead, just try and immerse yourself in the work you see here. It is composed of thousands of individual blown glass pieces, set on a mirrored pedestal (so you can look up at it from underneath) with this yellow center piece probably being at least ten feet tall. When you take it all in you understand where he derived the name for this installment. Biltmore 2024 I showed you the grandeur of the exterior of this American chateau so I’d be completely remiss if I didn’t show you some of the interior. So here’s a look at four of the thousands of fascinating details inside. Right next to the entry hall is the Winter Garden, a solarium that I’m pretty sure you could drop our old house into with room to spare. My favorite room in this mansion had to be the library. Two stories high with over ten thousand books covering a vast array of genres. It speaks to George Vanderbilt’s intellectual curiosity. It also has a concealed passageway that leads to the guest rooms (the kid in me loves that). My favorite touch here is the metal door inset with a heavenly scribe extolling you to silence. After looking at that I was sure if I spoke too loudly a nun would hop out from behind a potted plant and wrap me on the knuckles with a ruler. Finally, I’ve included a shot the Grand Staircase. If you lived here these stairs were going to keep you in shape. American Château 2024 Alright, I’m back from my three weeks on the road hunting the eclipse (bagged it) and visiting friends. So let’s get at it! It’s not the Alps and it’s certainly not the Loire Valley. Backed by the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina you’ll find Biltmore House, constructed by George Washington Vanderbilt II during America’s Guilded age at the end of the nineteenth century. Inspired by French chateaus, the Biltmore is billed as the largest privately owned house in the United States (still owned by Vanderbilt’s descendants but since the 1950’s opened as a historic house museum). This was Vanderbilt’s ‘summer’ home which he referred to as his “little mountain escape”. A couple of things hit me while touring the mansion. First, George had excellent taste. There’s a lot of guys with money but abysmal taste, all gold interiors, chandeliers in bathrooms, that sort of thing. That’s not the case here. George had an eye for fine art, decor, architecture, etc. (a Monet here, a Whistler there, Renaissance tapestries, you know, that sort of thing). Second, George wasn’t even the richest Vanderbilt of his generation. He was the third son of the third generation of the dynasty’s founder Cornelius Vanderbilt. And this is what he built with his ‘small’ share of the family fortune. That’s a lot of fortune! It’s Done 2024 Turns out the Cloud Gods were pretty nice to everyone. By now you’ve seen a zillion eclipse photos so why not a zillion and one. And since I made this with a phone it’s easy to turn around (although I wish facebook wouldn’t degrade photos so much when you post em’). So I went with the wide shot to give a sense of place (besides as much fun as they are all the closeups look the same). Here you can see the glow on the horizon and Venus popping out below the sun. Turns out the fellows in foreground traveled even farther than we did to take in the celestial magic, they are from the Netherlands. Hall of Justice 2024 Ok, sure, I said I wasn’t going to post while I was traveling. As a matter of fact I was pretty damn adamant about it! Nope, you won’t be hearing from me again till I get home. But then I came here, to this magnificent hall, and I only needed my iPhone to make the shot so it’s easy to turn around too. And, and… it was just so cool! How could I not share it today? This is the Cincinnati Union Terminal. It’s a grand old train station from the 1930’s and built when Art Deco was at its heights. It was in danger of demolition, as the need for a massive train station waned, but the people of Cincinnati wisely transformed it instead. It now houses a collection of museums and called the Cincinnati Museum Center. I made this photo with my phone set to wide and shooting back at the front of the building while also encompassing the mesmerizing rotunda overhead. As to the title of today’s photo, Hall of Justice, that is a reference for you comic book fans, specifically DC Comics fans. The front of the building is the model for the headquarters of the superhero Justice League (which, for you non comic book enlightened, included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.). So, that’s it. Now it’s time to go eclipse hunting. But even if I’m thwarted by the ever insidiously creeping cloud cover this trip was not in vain since I found this gobsmacking (yes, two gobsmacks in one week) architecture to shoot. It’s Coming! 2017 It’s less than a week away. This is my shot of the last eclipse taken in South Carolina just as the sun is starting to come out of full totality and peek past the moon. Back then (2017, as those of you who pay attention to my title line already know) I still lived in Maryland but happened to be in South Carolina on vacation. Now I live in South Carolina and this eclipse is going to be no where close to where I am. But that’s not stopping me, I am going to hunt it down. If I was being smart about this (which I’m not) I’d probably go to Texas where the chance of clear skies are good. But no, I’m going to Cincinnati (as my base) and then out into the farmland of Indiana where the odds of a clear sky this time of year are less than fifty-fifty. But why Mike, why!?! Well, I’ve got friends in Cincinnati so in the event of a cloud-out of this celestial black-out I still get to visit with my friends. And clouds happen in Texas too ya’ know, so why not. Anyway, this is my last post till I return from my hunt, which I start tomorrow and will last about three weeks (I have lots of other friends to visit here and there along the way). And as many of you know I rarely post images while I’m traveling, I like to get home and work on them. Now I have to admit, I didn’t post this shot just so I could talk about the cool upcoming event. Nope, I also wanted to show you my eclipse shot while it’s still fresh and exciting and you’re not sick to death of seeing them. Pretty crafty, huh? So, see you on the back end. Morning on the Marsh 2024 I got up this morning and the light on the marsh was just so pretty I couldn’t resist, so I grabbed my camera and made this shot from our bedroom balcony (although this photo really doesn’t do justice to the real thing). It’s interesting living somewhere where you can watch the tides. The marsh you see here extends all the way from our building (and this scene) to the river which is four or five hundred yards away (a tidal river of course). And normally it looks just like this. Yet when we get a really big tide (full moon or new moon) the water will cover the sandy flats and most of the shorter grass all the way back down to the river. Instead of a grassland it looks like a lake. Also, I just love the dead tree! There’s something about bare branches that I (and many others) find captivating. Behemoths of the Sea 2021 If you’ve ever been to Charleston you know one of its most prominent features is the Ravenel bridge. It dominates the skyline. It’s just so big! Nothing comes close to its size, until you see the magnitude of a container ship passing under it. It’s hard to get a handle on just how big these behemoths are. And even though this bridge has underwater barriers on which ships are supposed to run aground before they could strike one of the towers (just like the Francis Scott Key bridge has) that’s an awful lot of mass to bring to a stop if the boat’s off course. Now, as to yesterday’s post where I was curious about your reaction to my selectively focused image of Claude Monet’s lily pond. The bulk of the responses were indeed very positive (because you’re all so nice) with only a few mehs. However, after having laid the shot aside for a while when I came back to it I would definitely stand with the mehsayers. What was I thinking!?! The flowers look like they were plastered into that shot by some rank amateur. I’ve learned (re-learned really) a valuable lesson. If I’m going to work a photo I’ve got to spend the time and work it till it’s finished or I realize it’ll never work and abandon it. Z celé Indie na nás největší dojem udělalo Varanasi. Velmi tradiční posvátné místo, kam se sjíždějí hinduisté z celé země, aby zde uctili památku svých nejbližších zemřelých a spálili jejich těla na břehu Gangy. Byl to opravdu velký zážitek, ale jak jsem se toho zpočátku obávala, bylo to celkově velmi pozitivní. Indii jsme projeli prakticky celou, ale kdybychom měli někomu doporučit, kam se jet určitě podívat, těch míst by zas nebylo tolik. Nicméně Varanasi by určitě bylo mezi nimi. Místní kuchyně je převážně vegetariánská, ale moc dobrá. Všude jsou davy lidí a všudypřítomný indický hluk. An Ode to Claude 2021 Hmmm… I seem to be doing a lot of odes lately. For anyone who is a fan of Claude Monet they will recognize the setting. This is his famed water lily pond with the distinctive Japanese bridge at his home in Giverny, France. With this shot I’m doing my own version of photographic Impressionism. If you’re interested in the technique I used, called focus stacking, read on. To make this image I combined three separate shots (camera on tripod) all focused on different parts of the image. The flowers in the foreground, the bridge in the background, and then somewhere in between. Normally you focus stack to get everything in the frame in sharp focus from front to back, but I was just going for select elements to be sharp and leaving the rest blurry. To be fair this is a pretty ham handed attempt that I only cranked out this morning (I was up against a self imposed deadline for today’s post). I’m also not sure this one’s worth the effort. But that’s a great benefit to posting. If I get a lot of positive reactions I may try and spend some more time working this image and see where it goes. And, if I get a lot of ‘mehs’, I’ll know it’s time to move on to the next one. Grand Teton National Park 2011 If you decide to post a photo I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to be the one to ding it. And as much as I like this one, having a picture with four distinct elements on their own separate planes that don’t interact with each other (meadow, treeline, mountain, clouds) and that have no leading lines connecting them is a bit of a compositional no-no. So that’s a ding. But mountains can sometimes get away with breaking normal rules of composition because they’re just so majestic (and it’s easier to use the symmetry exception with them, but that’s a discussion for another day). So let’s make it a half ding instead (or even just a quarter ding because of the dramatic clouds). Other than that faux pas it’s not a bad shot. And, I have to admit that now that I’m digging through the archives to bring you the Photo du Jour I’m having trouble somedays finding a worthy shot. It can really get time consuming. Since my catalogue has ridiculously ballooned to 160,000 photos, mostly because of undisciplined editing on my part and the ease of making digital images (something I’ll bet a lot of you can relate to) it can be overwhelming. I’ve gotta toss a lot of hay to find that needle. Anyway, enough whining, I just wanted to share with you some of my process. The Golden Gate 2010 I have posted this one in the past but there’s probably a lot of you who didn’t follow me then and it’s such a nice shot it’s worth a second look. However, with all the brouhaha swirling about around Kate’s family photo of her and the royalettes being photoshopped, I feel obliged to tell you (sadly) that I have altered this photo too. You see, the lights on top of the tower don’t actually come on at the same time, they alternate. But I thought I’d prefer the way they would look with both of them on at the same time. The Golden Gate Bridge 2010 In my discussion about fear of falling vs fear of heights I mentioned I had been to the top of the suspension tower of the Golden Gate. I had a friend ask about those shots but as part of my access to the bridge I promised never to post those photos on social media, so I won’t. But this is a nice shot of the bridge from San Francisco on the ocean side, so you’ll have to settle for this. If you try real hard you can imagine me at the top of the nearest tower running back and forth past the communication dish (the little round thing in the middle in the middle). Bride with the Floating Scarf 2011 I doubt this is actually called a scarf but I’m not sure what else to call it. This is one of my all time favorite travel photos and even though I prefer the color version (which I posted a long time ago) there were enough of you who’ve told me how much you liked my b&w shot of Rio that I decided to put this up today (not to worry color fans, in a rare two day event the color version is coming tomorrow). A Tip o’ the Cap 2010 Well it’s St. Patrick’s Day. A day where many are festooned in green and consider imbibing to be a sacred obligation. And I have to ask, at the risk of offending even though no offense is meant, why is the most common shade of green used for this celebration such a lurid shade of that beautiful color? Oh well, that’s just my taste. Today I’ll leave the greening of beers and rivers to others and commemorate this festival by posting a shot that’s, dare I say, more organic. Nope, I dare not! As I hear that in my head while writing this I’m thinking what an overblown and pretentious use of that word it is (I’ll leave it for other blowhards instead of this blowhard). Anyway, I feel like this shot is quintessentially Irish (in no small part because I made it in Ireland). This is Gus O’ Connor’s pub which was founded in 1832 in the small village of Doolin in County Clare only steps from the Cliffs of Moher. There’s a natural charm about this scene with the musicians, not up on a stage, but ensconced in a booth with a couple of pints of Guinness resting on the table. I imagine this is the sort of tableau you could have seen back over the past few hundred years throughout Ireland. I Don’t Think So 1985 This is my friend Chip. When we were young men we did two truly awesome trips together. First we traveled together for three months after college across the western United States. And then, in 1985, we spent three months traveling around the world together. This shot is from the first leg of that trip (along the southeastern coast of the big island of Hawaii). Now Chip has always had this ability to walk up to the edge of a cliff and look straight down. It didn’t matter how tall. I never could. It makes me queasy. When I’m out on heights like that I feel like I’m being sucked out into the open space in front of me. However, I think a point of clarification is in order here. I’m not afraid of heights, I’m just afraid of falling. There is a difference. If there’s a railing or I’m teathered, I’m good to go. I’ve done multiple flights in helicopters with the doors off so I can hang out the side and take photos. I’ve been at the top of the suspension tower of the Golden Gate Bridge looking straight down to the sea over 700’ feet below (leaning against a nice solid railing don’t ya know). But go hang out on something like this lava arch with no supports, no way in hell! So before Chip headed out for his death defying feat here (from my perspective at least) I asked two things of him. First, give me a second to go over there to get in position so I can get a good shot of you. A Soft Green Desert c.1990’s Soft…except for all the cactus with inches long thorns and spikes or those other cactus with the fine, little hairy needles tipped with barbs that seem to burrow into your skin rather than stab you fiercely like their larger brethren. Those little ones are called glochids (that’s a new word for me). And outside of the cactus and bushes I normally think of desert scenes like this as having a brown and dusty earth rolled between the plants. But it was winter when I made this photo and I think there’d been some rain so here we have a green carpet of grass instead (this is from sometime in the 90’s as the circa mark in the title indicates, sadly no exif data with scanned slides to keep track of exact dates). Mom and Baby 2022 What is this, monkey week? Nah, just this one more. You see I actually preferred the image I posted yesterday to this one (“But this one includes a baby!” I know, I know, nevertheless, I liked yesterday’s shot better). And after showing you the vervet monkey yesterday, which are fairly common ranging from Ethiopia to South Africa, I felt obliged to follow up with a post today showing you this type of monkey. That’s because this monkey is a Red Colobus, which is not only endangered but also only found here, on the island of Unguja in Zanzibar. By the way Zanzibar is the name of the whole archipelago not any one island. The main island in the archipelago is named Unguja and is often commonly (and inaccurately) referred as Zanzibar. (Ohh… I’m getting to double-dip today with an animal and a geography factoids. Lucky you!) Caught Ya’ 2022 Now I could be referring to the fact that I caught this vervet monkey with my camera up in the dense foliage of a tropical forest, but it’s actually the monkey’s expression that made me go with the title for this photo. I can’t help it, when I look at them I feel as though they have a startled look on their face like they’ve just been caught raiding the fridge at midnight by their spouse. “And eating with your hands too. Tsk, tsk, tsk”! It’s so easy to anthropomorphize with monkeys. We’re just that close. Faces, hands, mannerisms. Don’t even get me going on the similarities of our DNA. Now for my photography buddies out there it’s worth noting a few things. First, like I mentioned, these monkeys were up in the trees and it was tricky moving around on the ground to get a clear shot of them through the branches. They also jumped around a lot, so as you closed in on the perfect spot and raised your camera, boom, they were gone. I was lucky with this one though since he was busy eating a… well, I don’t know what he’s eating. A jackfruit maybe? Anyway, the other thing about being in the forest is that it was dark, darker than it looks here. I was handheld at 500 mm, wide open, using a 1/640s shutter speed (even wide open as long as you nail the eyes you’re good). My lifesaver for these conditions though was the fact that I was using ISO 8000. I can’t believe it. I know I’ve harped on it before but I’m still amazed by how much you can clean up an image taken with these high ISOs. Grackle 2024 Common, great-tailed, boat-tailed, slender-billed, and that’s only to name a few. Who knew there were so many types of grackle? (Well, not the slender-billed anymore, turns out they’re extinct, but the others.) To tell you the truth I hadn’t given grackles much thought (well, any thought really) till I had to try and id this bird for today’s post. But forget the nomenclature (although I think he’s probably a boat-tailed grackle) but look at how striking he is. When I was out shooting I was mostly ignoring these birds. I was looking for something flashy and these grackles appeared to be solid black and boring. I only took this photo because nothing else was around and I thought I’ll just get in a little more practice with my camera (handholding , settings, that kinda thing). It wasn’t till I got this shot up on my computer that I saw all the subtleties and all the hidden details. I love the crisscross pattern his feathers make, and the faint indigo iridescence where the light hits ‘em just right. And what about the puffed up black of his head and breast. Very cool. City by the Sea 1990 There are a lot of cities by the sea but I doubt there are any more beautiful than Rio de Janeiro. Now I can hear you thinking, “Why yes, I think you’re right. So why the black and white then? You only do that once in a blue moon, if that often. Wouldn’t this be prettier in color?” Yup, it would be, but… You know how I’ve mentioned that there are certain places I’ve visited that I would love to go back to and photograph all over again, well Rio tops the list. And one of the main reason for this is that the photos I did make there don’t measure up. This shot is from a slide which I scanned into the computer. The quality of the slide itself wasn’t very good to begin with (a bit grainy and fuzzy) and then the scan I did wasn’t the best of scans either. Also the final color in the photo was all funky and even with the magician tricks that I threw at it (Photoshop and Lightroom) I couldn’t get it to look right. Then it occurred to me, if I can’t get the color to look right get rid of the color all together. So, black and white it is. This will have to do, unless (until) I get to go back and shoot it all over again. Sagrada Familia, Barcelona 2019 It’s almost done! Over 140 years ago the cornerstone was laid for Gaudí’s masterpiece and they hoped to have it completed by 2026 in time for the centennial of Mr. Gaudi’ death. But there’s still a lot of work to do and they may not…dare I say it…make this deadline (ooh bad, shouldn’t have said it). The central spire is still under construction, which when completed will make this basilica the tallest church building in the world. And whereas the exterior is still being worked on the spectacular interior has been complete for quite some time now. In this shot I’m standing at the ‘crossing’ where the nave, the long arm of the cathedral (seen here running vertically through the photo) intersects the transept, the short arm (seen running side to side in the shot). Now you’re all prepped for the Jeopardy category ‘Parts of a Cathedral’. The last thing I have to mention is is how Gaudi designed his interior columns to emulate trees. Look at how the branch out the higher they go. Taj Mahal 1985 It’s been done way better by others but I don’t care, I still have to post my own shot. It’s an interesting thing about this world famous icon, you could move around and shoot it from any angle you want but the only angle that really matters is to shoot it straight on like this (more or less). The architect had perfect vision for how the Taj should be viewed and where the symmetry is ideal. To present this shot, so you can really enjoy how beautiful the architecture is, I had to push the pixels around a little. The day I was there (I only had a couple of hours on one afternoon) it was about 104 or 105 degrees and the sky was almost as white as the marble of the mausoleum. I also had to spend some time removing the damage that showed up on the original slide (like a horizontal scratch going all the way across the photo which you can still see where it intersects the dome if you look close). As I’ve delved through my archives I see some of my older images still hold up, but others… well, I’d love to reshoot them and see what I could manage today. My gear’s better now (I loved film but I love digital that much more) and, more importantly, my skills are far better. White Ibis 2024 Well, muddy white ibis in this instance. Just before this group took off they had been rooting around on the mud flats in the tidal marsh. Lots of good eats there, don’t ya know. If you look close you can see a glop of mud clinging to the tip of the beak of the bird in the center (not to mention all that mud on its feet). They use those long curved beaks to jab down into the mud after the little black crabs that are trying to scurry away to safety. Hooded Mergansers 2024 About a month ago my friend Gene posted a photo he’d made of one of these guys in northern Virginia. This was a bird I had never seen before but I really wanted to. The next day I saw my first one (funny how that works sometimes). I didn’t get a good photo of them that day but couple of days ago I was able to get this shot. I feel like we photographers are a lot like big game hunters, gotta fill out the trophy list, but it in a kinder, gentler way, of course. Now I can go for the next level and see if I can get a shot of one in flight or doing something interesting. Of course even swimming by I find these birds pretty interesting all by themselves. Bad Hair Day 2024 When I looked at this photo of a snowy egret that I made along the intracoastal waterway outside Charleston this morning, I thought of Rodin’s sculpture of Balzac. Beth thought of Phyllis Diller (for everyone under 50 use your ‘google machine’ (as our neighbor refers to it) and figure it out)). After, I landed on Balzac for our gossamer plumed friend here I used my google machine to take a look at Rodin’s work. Nope, not even close. Beth wasn’t all that close either. But that’s the fun of anthropomorphizing, YOU get to decide what you see! Vendetta 2024 I was playing a game on my phone the other day and when I looked up and across the living room I noticed how the dusk light outside the window and our amber glass globe made for a pretty interesting image. (This captivating hand blown glass piece was made by my friends Mark Hill and Paul Swartwood of Glen Echo Glassworks). Now this is one of those photos that can be perceived in two different ways. When you look at it closely you’re sucked in by the fine details in the design, like the crosshatching and perfectly spaced bubbles (inspired by mid-century Swedish glass). But when you hold the shot back a little you might see a face in the globe, looking a bit like a jack-o-lantern. The more I looked the more I thought the face was smiling, but a crooked smile, more like a smirk. And it struck me (for whatever strange reason) that it was all somehow reminiscent of the Guy Fawkes mask worn by ‘V’ in the ‘V for Vendetta’ graphic novels and movies. Hence the title for today’s photo. Run Rabbit Run! 2024 The Center for Birds of Prey goes all out to show crowds how beautiful their bird (all rescues) are in flight. To demonstrate the hunting skills of the Harris’s Hawk they ask for a volunteer’s help but without explaining the specific help they need. Once they have their vic… ah, volunteer they explain that they are going to be the ‘rabbit’ (like the little kid seen here). Then they hand him a dowel with a long tether attached to a stuffed ‘rabbit’ on it and tell him to run. Actually, it’s more like RUN! It was only seconds before the first of the hawks which were circling pounced. I know this actually looks like the kid has the bird on the tether and is flying him like a kite but if you look closely you’ll see the faux rabbit just peaking out behind the hawk. In the other shot you see this gorgeous barred owl swooping low to the ground as it flys towards a landing post where there’s a tasty morsel luring it home. Now they trust the Harris’ Hawk to return to them (although they’re not crazy so they have a tracking device attached to the birds just in case) but they’re not so sure about the owl. In this instance it is the bird actually is on the tether, a long tether that allows a woman to run beside them and not impede their flight. Paradockdog 2024 I shot multiple waves of long jumping pooches and never even noticed this dog was different, well that’s not entirely true, I noticed he had on a pretty flashy vest, but that was it. It was halfway through the morning when someone pointed out to me that this dog only had three legs. I had already shot two waves by this pup and he was running and jumping so well that it never even occurred to me that he was a tripaw. Dock Dogs! 2024 This weekend Charleston is hosting SEWE, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. This is a huge exhibition with multiple venues around the city which have wildlife art, music, food, pet goo-gahs, and activities. And of those activities dock dogs and the raptor demonstration are my favorite. And I’m going to show them to you over the next few days (there will be repetition of subject matter but so what, who doesn’t love dogs soaring into pools or birds of prey soaring around a public park). Today I’m starting with a hometown ringer. This is Calhoun my friend Shelly’s Boykin Spaniel (the state dog of South Carolina) competing in the long jump. Here he is blasting off for a whopping jump of 17’4”.
