When we first bought the property back in 2017 our lot was covered with trees. We saved the cleared lumber for firewood and even made our dining table out of a log that was removed during that process. We love being surrounded by the forest and wanted to support areas in the world that needed the most help with deforestation. Thank you to all our wonderful guests! Today I've got a big update on the willow cuttings project. It's been 2 months exactly since I made that initial planting of 30 cuttings at the St Catharines site. You can check out my post here https://www.instagram.com/p/C4TVTKuL32K/ The cuttings went straight from a nearby donor tree into the ground in under 30 minutes with no water soaking, rooting hormones, fertilizer or other assistance. They endured heavy snowfalls and a lot of frosty conditions with overnight lows well below zero. I don't believe the ground froze and we did receive above-average precipitation over the last two months. The initial results have been miraculous. I quickly sampled 15 of the cuttings and found 5 of them to already have at least one set of leaves on them, 3 with buds, 5 looking healthy with no growth and 2 that have turned dark and have dried up. I conclude that the cuttings are taking root and the project looks like a big success! After considering how little work was put in and the weather the cuttings endured I'm very happy with these results. My goal is to have 20 of the 30 alive and growing at the end of the summer and that is a real possibility. The largest cutting I planted with multiple branches seems to be doing the best but the only two I believe completely dead are larger than any of the others with leaves on them. There's one cutting that got snapped down to within 2 inches of the ground that has formed buds on it. All the ones with leaves have seen some of their upper portions dry up but there are some cuttings still completely yellow with no signs of growth. Time will tell but I'm very encouraged with these early results. By early June it should be apparent how many of them have successfully rooted. Another 30 Willows were planted this week. #30willows This time I was back in Burlington planting a small stream that's a tributary to the creek I planted last time. Two decades ago there was a very successful stream rehabilitation project on the main creek and I took the willow cuttings from trees planted from that project. These are a different kind of willow than I had previously used this year, I would describe them as a Pussy Willow bushing tree. I've attached a photo of those trees along the main creek. They've done so well, and their only enemy seems to be beavers who benefit the ecosystem when creating houses and dams. The stream I planted has become quite degraded over the years and I'm hoping the cuttings will help stabilize the bank to prevent erosion as well as keep this important cold water input to the main creek shaded so it doesn't heat up during the summer and can maintain suitable temperatures for juvenile trout and salmon. As with the other plantings while not at the perfect locations I believe these trees will provide tremendous benefit to the local ecosystem if they take and will serve as an experiment to see what's possible and if my current process is viable to implement at greater scale. This will probably be my final willow planting this season. I've done 90 trees in 90 minutes all told. Crediamo pertanto sia molto importante erogare attività di educazione e sensibilizzazione alla cui base vi sia un approccio scientifico, razionale e competente , riguardante le tematiche ambientali. Nel 2016 un gruppo di ragazzi ha sentito il bisogno di creare una realtà che si occupasse di tutelare e rigenerare l’ambiente della pianura padana senza troppe chiacchere e attraverso azioni concrete, è così che è nata Spiritus Mundi ODV. Nel corso degli anni decine di persone hanno contributo alla causa come soci volontari, sostenitori e collaboratori. In Africa, animal species face grave threats such as illegal hunting and habitat destruction, and it is crucial to reverse this situation urgently. This project is located on a small island in Lake Victoria, home to a sanctuary for chimpanzees. These magnificent primates come from various locations in Uganda, and here they receive the care they need for their survival. For 2 weeks or more, participants in this project will assist in food preparation and feeding, conduct guided tours of the island to raise awareness among tourists and locals about the pressing need to protect chimpanzees, engage in tree planting activities, and contribute to the cultural aspect of the project. This project is truly special, offering a unique and enriching experience. Not only will participants play a vital role in the well-being of the chimpanzees, but they will also have an incredible opportunity for learning and personal growth. IL NUTRIMENTO INVERNALE NEI NOSTRI BOSCHI DI PIANURA🍒❄️ Durante il periodo invernale diverse specie di animali dei boschi e delle campagne della pianura padana entrano in letargo, mentre altri restano attivi e in costante ricerca di nutrimento. Proprio in questi periodi di freddo in cui le fonti di cibo sono scarse, il nutrimento offerto dagli arbusti diventa fondamentale: Biancospino, Viburno pallone di maggio, Fusaggine, Frangola e Sanguinella risultano importanti alleati per molte specie di passeriformi come il Pettirosso, Cinciallegra, Capinera e Codibugnolo che frequentano con vorace appetito i margini a siepe dei nostri boschi dove trovano in abbondanza bacche e semi degli arbusti. La biodiversità vegetale favorisce il sostentamento della biodiversità animale, creiamo assieme ecosistemi, che possano fungere da casa per gli animali selvatici.
