Unlimited basil? Ok! . Did you know that a stem of basil, stuck in water, will grow roots?? It totally does and it's super easy. Here are 3 stages of basil: the plant growing in my AeroGarden (back left), a recently trimmed off piece in plain water (as the plant gets to close to the light I have to trim it) and 2 fully rooted, ready to transplant ones in water with a bit of soil in it. . A few things to know: cut the pieces off with the longest stems possible, generally right above a node, where new tiny leaves are growing. Make sure its not about to or has flowered, it's done growing good basil at that point. Immediately place the cuttings in plain water. Let sit in a sunny place till tiny roots form. At this point I'll add a bit of liquid fertilizer. Once roots are crazy, start adding soil to the water. When ready to transplant, just make sure the soil is REALLY wet for the first day or so, then treat them as normal! . HOW TO GET FREE HERBS AND TOMATOES. This is a tip that’s too good not to share! Extremely easy way to propagate more plants from your existing plants. Prune basil, mint, tomatoes suckers, and drop the cuttings in a cup of water. Make sure the cup is always full and these plants are in a warm, well lit, environment. The first week or so nothing will really happen but then you will start to see roots grow. Once the roots begin to form, you should transplant. These clones can be transplanted both in Hydroponic and soil based systems! I encourage you to try it yourself. Basil propagation has been going well. I'd have liked to get all the cuttings into net cups but since it's been very cold outside at night, I transplanted most into soil containers. The two on the far right are in net cups. I modified the lids of some juice concentrate cans so they'd fit into the cans. An ideal temporary hydroponic solution. Once it's warmer these plants will go into my hydroponic garden.
