Happy birthday little beets! I don’t like beets, at least that’s what I always say. The truth is I had them once when I was probably seven and never again since. My Pop-Pop used to like them and I remember my mom making them for him. Now that I’m older and more mature in my thinking, I realize that my pallet has probably changed since then and I also realize I never really gave them a fair chance. This year I decided to try two different kinds, one of them is this golden beet from Baker Creek seeds. First mow of the season. I was going to wait until May but my neighbor cut his and by the unwritten rules of the country I have 48 hours to respond. Eleven little Welsummer chicks hatched, and have moved into the bathroom. Elf was distraught yesterday when I wouldn’t let her take one outside to play with her. Sadly, despite it being too cold, I don’t trust her not to squeeze them to death in excitement… and I’m not game to test the theory. . The hedges and verges are regaining their colour, and our little home is starting to take shape outside. The garden is still being dug for the vegetable patch, the orchard is being fenced to protect it from livestock, and we’re slowly starting to see our influence develop on the blank canvas outside of the cottage. Life is coming back to our patch of land, both with, and through us. . I’m already planning some raised beds, a polytunnel, a kiwi vine, saskatoons and a fig. Obviously not everything will thrive in this climate, but I’m a firm believer in giving things a good go. Endlich beginnen die Zuckererbsen im Gewächshaus (und Freiland) zu blühen. Sie sind bereits 120 cm hoch, ich musste sie schon entspitzen, da sie ans Dach angestoßen sind. Es ist die Sorte 'Frieda Welten', eine Winterkefe/winterfeste Zuckererbse, die ich Mitte November gesät hatte. In einem anderen Kübel, der sehr intensiv bepflanzt ist, ist eine andere Erbse gewachsen. Da konnte ich schon mehrfach ernten. Einmal mehr begeistert mich der Blumenkohl "Frühernte" 🌱 selbst in den letzten zwei Wochen, die ausgesprochen kalt waren, ist er super weitergewachsen. Dass auch stärkere Fröste im nichts anhaben können weiß ich schon seit ein paar Jahren, aber auch dieses Jahr hat er es wieder bewiesen. Gesät wird er bei mir Anfang Januar im Haus unter meinen Tageslichtlampen, kommt dann im Februar ins Gewächshaus und wird in größere Töpfe gepflanzt. Im März geht's dann ins ungeschützte Freiland und mit den ersten Ernten rechne ich etwa Mitte Mai 🧑🏻🌾 Der einzige Schutz den er bei mir braucht ist ein Netz gegen die Tauben. Das Beet habe ich für das Foto kurz aufgedeckt, bin eine halbe Stunde bei den Ziegen gewesen und als ich es wieder zudecken wollte, war schon wieder eine halbe Pflanze vom Spitzkohl abgefressen von den Tauben 😅 Nach diesem Satz gibt's dann eine längere Blumenkohlpause bei mir im Garten, denn über den Sommer will er bei mir nicht richtig wachsen. Do you know what egg “bloom” is? Eggs have a protective coating covering them called bloom. Once eggs are laid, this coating dries and prevents any bacteria from entering the egg. This is beneficial for both humans consuming eggs and the chicks inside fertile eggs. In humans, this stops eggs from becoming contaminated with bacteria such as salmonella. For chicks, bloom protects the embryo before and during incubation. Eggs that remain unwashed after collection can remain unrefrigerated and safe to eat for multiple weeks. Leafy greens well underway. Tatsoi, baby bok choy, purple Tatsoi, Chinese broccoli and spinach. Back onto seed raising after a brief hiatus settling into raising a different kind of life. These were planted on top of bokashi waste dug into the beds and left to sit for 2 weeks.
