I sure do love to cruise the old school boards. I was a crazy skater back in the 80s hitting all the steep hills, doing four-wheel slides and ollying over trash cans and s#!t. Those were the days!🛹🔥 Learning to dive roll when I wiped out was a major skill that kids these days don't ever learn because they are now riding automatic scooters and non-skateboards...no skill to master and zero exercise outside of standing upright.😂🤣😂 We would have laughed our tails off if we saw some kids doing that back then.😆 They would be called "posers." Getting roughed up doing boy stuff was what helped make our generation survivors...climbing trees, sparring with other martial artists, and downright throwing rocks and swinging sticks has become ancient lost arts. I miss the dang days of youthfulness...but with age should come wisdom. Some thoughts on the current state of shred - There’s been a bit of a dust up lately over a few retorts i've posted on the current state of snowboarding. Some have clearly taken offense that I find much of today's content to be un-imaginative / non-innovative. I've been called all manner of names (old man seems to be a go to favorite). I sense some are down right offended by my take on the state of the sport today. Here’s the thing, Yup, I'm old. 52 going on ancient. I shot shred fulltime for 20yrs. I also shot skate for yrs & have published 2 books on these subjects. Over time, I've seen every step of the sports progression. Today, when I see clips like Red Gerard, Travis Rice, or even legends like Terje, I see LEGIT innovation. But mostly what I see today, is kids trying to emulate skate. Thing is, Snowboardings a different sport, the boards strapped to ur feet. So to compare riding down a ten stair on a snowboard vs doing it on a skate? I'm sorry, no comparison. It's a known fact that the Snowboarding industry has been in the dog house for yrs. Is it really a mystery why? Here’s some pics I took back in the 90’s & early 2K’s. Some are decades old, Terje pressing the wood at Hemisdal in 93, Kevin Jones back lip at Squaw in 94, Joe W in Tahoe city sliding the round in 92, that was 30 yrs ago. These pics are old, but these are the riders who pushed the sport to where it is now. They were the tip of the spear, pushing the envelope. Hey, do whatever u want on ur board, it is one of the great things bout shred, FREEDOM, period. but if u truly wanna innovate, look at the sport ur trying to copy (skateboarding) & ask yourself, how can I push this to a new level? Cuz copying what these guys did 30yrs ago & calling it new, its just a bite & its killing snowboardings legitimacy as a groundbreaking innovative obsession. My first mountain bike was a Kona Lisa. Bubble gum blue and just the right price for a broke college kid. Since moving to Portland I have had urban bike envy and have been on the hunt for the perfect bike of my own. This little 94’ Kona Fire Mountain popped up on marketplace and I knew it was the one. Skinnies, rollers, drops, teeter totters, and elevated turns, Bryn Mawr Meadows has it all. A frequently asked question is “where is the more challenging stuff?”, so the park board responded. The features at Bryn Mawr are all 2’ wide or less and some are a couple feet off the ground, riding all these features will definitely require some skill.
