Amanda Armbrust-Asselin has been quietly representing NGUS on the US Coffee Competitions stage for almost a decade. In her tenure (serving as co-chair of the US Coffee Champs Brewer's Cup Competition since 2019 and Head Judge since 2017) she has supported and trained dozens of judges in this community. Re-certifying as a WCC World Brewer's Cup judge last week in Chicago - using updated rules and newly adapted SCA assessments - was a reminder that Specialty Coffee is constantly changing. Not only is the product evolving, but so are our expectations and measures, along with the people who support coffee along the supply chain. Luckily, in places like #uscoffeechamps and #wcc, we have the agency to build intentional community that celebrates and supports coffee and the dedicated professionals who steward it. I did the judgy wudgy thing at the US Barista Competition this 2024! It was a blast! I shared many happy memories with my fellow judges, delicious meals, laughter and so many bittersweet goodbyes. There were people from all over the country, all coming to Rancho Cucamonga for Barista, Brewers and Cup Tasters. The incredible thing, was that everyone was there volunteering their time, paying for their travel, lodging for the sake of the mission of Specialty Coffee. People were there because they care deeply for coffee and because it is pure passion for the craft. There's no logic to passion, you either have it, or you don't. Better coffee is my mission in life, and I've found my group that shares the same values as me. I'm fortunate to be part of this amazing journey alongside both the competition and the judging. #frappebackfriday A little USBC throw back since I’m so inspired by watching all the competitors this last weekend and seeing @flaless take the win! 🥇 In 2017 the USBC was hosted during @specialtycoffeeassociation Expo in Seattle, Wa. With all the coffee folks coming to town we knew we had to do something special @cherrystreetph. With the help of the cafe team (specially @conor.evan) we served 3 special drinks that week, each a recreation of the 3 previous USBC champions signature drinks. *Recreating award winning signature drinks that fit into a busy cafe workflow deserved its own award 😅 *also after calculating COGS on current competition milk drinks (retail would be 12.50 for a single shot + 4oz) we probably should have charged a bit more for these 😂 Can anyone name whose 3 drinks these are and who won in 2017? 🏆 #coffee #cafe #coffeeshop #coffeedrinks #specialtycoffee #uscoffeechamps

Huge congratulations to our boss, @weihong_blendin, for winning the 2024 US Brewers Cup Championship! He will represent the US in the World Brewers Cup this April in Chicago. This marks Weihong’s third time competing in the Brewers Cup. His first attempt was in Orange County, where he placed third, followed by last year’s competition in Portland, where he placed second. There is no “what if” scenario - what if I hadn’t been disqualified from my compulsory round? I felt extremely upset when I learned that I had been disqualified because my compulsory round weights were 1-2g less than the standard. The competition may not always be entirely fair, but God knows how much effort we have all put in. Instead of feeling discouraged by the outcome, we can use it as a learning experience and gain a better understanding of ourselves in order to improve.
