Nem csak a kerti, de a szobanövényeinkkel is kell törődünk tavasszal. Lassan vége a fűtési szezonnak, a lakásban szárazabb, nyugalmi időszaknak. Ültessük át a benti lakókat fajtájuknak megfelelő virágföldbe és egy-két számmal nagyobb cserépbe. Az utóbbit ne vigyük túlzásba, mert akkor nem a levelét, hanem a gyökér növekedését fogja előtérbe helyezni. Én itt egy csokrosindát helyeztem új cserépbe, már igazán szomorkás hangulatú, száraz levelű volt. Az elhalt részeket leszedegettem, majd átültettem. Nu ik lekker bezig was, het derde en grootste bed ook aangepakt. De grond was gezakt en ik had nog veel potentieel vulmateriaal: dunne takjes van de gesnoeide heg, gemaaid gras. Dus besloot het mijzelf niet onnodig makkelijk te maken 😆 De helft van de bak met compost overgeschept naar de andere helft. Vervolgens karton, takken en twijgen en een laag grasmaaisel op de bodem. Toen de dubbele laag compost terugscheppen. Vervolgens die leeggekomen helft vullen met karton, takken en gras. Helft van de compost weer terug (volg je hem nog?). Laagje verse wormenmest en lavameel erbovenop; ready to go! 🌱 Zie de laatste foto voor de ‘before’, met nog wat laatste snijbieten, wortels en enorme palmkolen. Dit bed is altijd een uitdaging trouwens: de helft ligt grotendeels in de schaduw, de andere helft krijg veel zon. Compost 🤎🤎🤎 We spent a good bit of yesterday turning over our compost and leaf-mould boxes and patting each other on the back for the quantity and quality of our haul 😂 I think we’ve nailed this one!! We have always composted, but early days at The Orchard had us spending a fortune on commercial compost, we never had enough and I always felt bad about all the plastic bags we were left with. Gradually, we’ve learned through trial and error and by following loads of gardeners on here how to make good compost and leaf-mould and in big enough quantities. I’m in awe of how dead plants and grass cuttings, waste paper, and what comes out of the hen run is then broken down by worms and beetles, fungi and micro organisms that we can’t see. The result in a few months is dark, sweet smelling earth, AND compost recycles minerals and nutrients that are released and absorbed by new plants and used in their growth. The cycle is phenomenal as more and more we understand how the land produces absolutely everything we need, from seed to crop, through harvest and back to seed. #compost #organic #nature #nochemicals #nopesticides
Texsel greens- “Garlic Kale” 26 days after sowing. Proof I will buy anything with garlic in the name. I have munched on several leaves (despite the seedlings only having a few 🤣) and so far no garlic flavor. I do like the look of them though and they should be good in salad regardless. About 3 months before planting out my dahlia tubers, we sadly had to have a massive oak tree removed due to damage it was causing. Consequently the ground was impoverished and just about entirely saw dust from the grinding out of the stump. I was astonished I got anything up to be honest! I added as much compost as I could at the time but now I’m going to really try and boost things by growing a ‘green manure’ crop to build up soil nutrition and microbes before next spring. This is where you grow an assortment (usually) of different seeds, often with nitrogen fixing qualities and slash them just before flowering. The slashed crop can be turned into the soil or left on top if using the ‘chop & drop’ approach. I have mixed together a range of seeds from my stash including nigella, mustard, soy, buckwheat, mung, flax, plus a few packets of flower seed that I’m not likely to bother with. These will be scattered heavily over the surface and hopefully enough will survive any birds entering the ‘fly in’ restaurant. Hopefully my dahlia tubers will still do that they should and be able to be lifted in winter or if it gets wet. Image 1: Old compost/bokashi fungal flat. Image 2: Fungal hyphae, oomycetes, cysts (dormant protozoa), yeast & a strand of organic material. Image 3 & 4: Bacterial feeding Nematode. Image 5: Nematode egg w/ nematode inside (possibly dead). We learned from @sdmicrobes that you can activate fungal growth by mixing your compost with bokashi. You can put it in a shallow pan and cover it for a few days until you see hyphae growth which will look like white fuzz. You can then put this in your compost tea. If you’re focusing on fungi in a compost tea, the brew time is almost never long enough for them as they’re slower to multiply. Creating one of these flats a couple of days beforehand is a great way to increase fungal activity and growth in a compost tea. 🌱 We used some poor compost and some really old bokashi from @sdmicrobes to do this one but we’re looking forward to utilizing this method with some quality inputs. The addition of #pumice 🪨 (various sizes) to @livingorganicsoils living soil blends takes our aeration to another level, with #biochar and #rice hulls already creating a measure of porosity in the mix 🤹♂️ We replaced the hydrafiber with locally sourced pumice stone, which holds its place in the soil medium during a watering or a downpour ⛈️ unlike another source of drainage - perlite - which floats to the top, encourages compaction, and isn't nearly as sustainable as pumice 💯 With the rice hulls breaking down somewhat quickly. Mulching the walnut trees 🌳 I purchased this battered old mixer wagon just for the job of mulching and it’s worked a treat! I used 40mm compost rather than woodchip purely based on price and availability. The local green waste recycling centre is only a few hundred meters from the field so it was a no-brainer. I might go along and flatten the heaps, but I might not.
