Il fallait un grand écrivain pour dire la fleur des peaux et savoir s'immiscer en quelques mots dans les vertiges et les profondeurs des âmes et des douleurs. Il fallait Emmanuel Carrère pour dignement dire l'humain qui se tient debout, toujours, un peu, beaucoup, comme il peut, même dans ses failles, même dans ses faiblesses, même dans sa chute. Il fallait un grand écrivain pour ne pas confondre empathie possible, parfois, et connivence morbide avec d'autres tueurs similaires, ayant agi quelques mois plus tôt à Charlie Hebdo. Il faut être tout simplement écrivain pour ne pas écrire qu'on a "aimé aussi ceux-là qui ont fait lever leurs victimes en leur demandant de décliner leur identité avant de viser au visage", qu' on les a "aimés dans leur maladresse (...) armes à la main semer la terreur en hurlant “on a vengé le Prophète" en un acte héroïque.
