The most adorable bird couple 🖤🤍 these two razorbills were cuddling and preening eachother for a long time, taking breaks to look at eachother and flap their wings in excitement 🥹 Aren’t they ridiculously cute? Unfortunately, razorbills are considered vulnerable in Norway and endangered Svalbard, according to the red list criteria. In mainland Norway their population went down with 30-50% within the last three generations (the last 50 years). In Svalbard there are estimated to be less than 250 breeding individuals. They’re mostly threatened by overfishing and climate change, but are also affected by other human activity, like for example oil spills. European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) | March 13, 2024 | Hornøya, Finnmark, Norway On March 12, we arrived to Vardø. We scoped Hornøya from the mainland to see if the birds have arrived there. Sure enough, there were tens of thousands of birds flying around and sitting on the cliffs. We were excited to go there the next morning, hoping for some good alcid photography. Well, when we made it there the next day, there were practically no birds on the island, except for Kittiwakes and Shags. We still spent the entire day there until it got dark. We did some seawatching and spent time with the Shags. We had plenty time to get creative with different approaches to photographing them. So, still a good day even though it was a little disappointing to not get close to Murres, Razorbills and Puffins. We never thought that an entire breeding colony of bird could just bugger off over night. European shags part 1. While the birds sing and the bluebells bloom here in England – my thoughts are still very much with the sea birds nesting on the snowy cliffs of Hornøya. The European shag is one of 7 bird species that breed on Hornøya’s cliffs. I had previously only seen shags at a great distance, so it was a real treat to photograph them up close when they were in their breeding plumage. Shags are a member of the cormorant family and have a rather menacing appearance at first glance. However, the shags at Hornøya are extremely friendly to visitors, and there is even a pair who annually nest on the bench of the biotope bird hide. European shags are monogamous breeders, producing up to three eggs per year. At the beginning of the breeding season there is lots of nest building activity, as well as copulation which was nonstop during both of my visits to the island. Instagram rather annoyingly makes it difficult to mix landscape and portrait images in the same post, so this post only features those with a portrait 5 x 7 ratio. Image 1: A shag couple on what I presume is at its nesting site on the cliffs on Hornøya’s southwest side. Image 2: A video clip from my phone of a shag on the snowy ledges of Hornøya’s western side. Image 3: A video clip of shags copulating at their nest site on the bench at Hornøya’s biotope bird hide. Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) | March 15, 2024 | Varanger, Finnmark, Norway This is one of my favorite memories of our trip to Norway. We had just spent the night in the car and started our drive to the next destination early morning. I was still sleeping but was then woken up with the question "Hey, do you want to photograph a Hawk-Owl? It's right by the road, on eye-level". Of course my answer was a YES!, so we drove back, I got out of my sleeping bag, got my camera from the back seat and photographed this stunning bird right first thing in the morning. Good life! Puffin portraits I’ve always loved photographing puffins and was very pleased to have the opportunity to indulge myself in some puffin portraiture during my visit to Hornøya. I visited the island twice and, on both occasions, there was sufficient change in the weather to explore a variety of different backgrounds and lighting conditions. Images 1 – 4: High key portraits of puffins exhibiting a range of expressions and behaivors. Image 5: A puffin walking with its head lowered. According to the Audubon Sea Institute, this stance suggests that the puffin is crossing over another puffin’s territory, so is deliberately trying to keep a low profile. Image 6: Some experimentation with bokeh created by snow in the foreground and dappled light in the background. Image 7 – 9: Puffin portraits against the sapphire blue Barents Sea. I feel these images represent Norway’s primary colors in a nutshell – combining the blues of the sea and the fjords with the reds and yellows of the fisherman cottages.
