An end of an era. Rolling on here is the last tram to ever run in Perth, tram 66. For about half a century, trams were an integral part of transportation in WA. Back before the age of cars, the only ways to get around the city were either to walk, ride a bike, take some form of horse powered transportation, or most conveniently, take the tram — but only up until 1958, when Perth’s tramway network would be closed due to competition from buses and cars. But now 66 runs again! 66 and a fleet of other historic trams are now lovingly run here in Whiteman Park.

This beautiful vehicle here is type H tram 371, an Adelaide tram built in 1929. 371 is currently owned by the Perth Electric Tramway Society (PETS). It has been out of service for a few years now, due to some issues with the inverter and damage to one of the doors. If you find you love this view here, consider becoming a volunteer! Remember to look after your trams, kids! The tram on the left is Perth 66, and the one on the right is Fremantle 30. Both trams were built and operated in Western Australia, back when WA had trams. Tram 66 has had a lot of love and care over the years and a massive effort was put in to get her up and running. Sadly, 30 had been sitting in a field for quite some time, so it has sustained a lot of damage. Comparing the two trams really shows how much hard work and dedication needs to be put into preserving history.

Here you can see Fremantle 30 being towed out of the carbarns. This was a part of a large project by the Perth Electric Tramway Society (PETS) to rearrange the majority of our trams as things had gotten out of order over time. 30 had to be towed out by tractor due to her unrestored condition. She is now sitting right at the back of our carbarns, with the hope that one day the tools will be available to fully restore such an interesting part of WA’s history.

In this stunning photo you can see trams running up the street in Boulder City. It may be weird to imagine trams in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, but for a long time it was the best way to get around the beautiful mining towns. Between 1902 and 1952, trams were operated by Kalgoorlie Electric Tramways. People from all walks of life used to ride the trams — from the wealthy mine owners to people on their way for a hard day’s work in the mine, trams were the way to go. Over time, the development of buses, and increased private car ownership, led to decreased ridership on the trams, eventually leading to the closure of the network. Thankfully such an interesting part of WA history has not been lost to time — some of these trams are preserved by PETS in Whiteman Park, Perth.
Das ist er - der jüngste Zugang des Straßenbahnmuseums Dresden! 🤩 Am letzten Wochenende öffnete das Straßenbahnmuseum Dresden wieder seine Pforten. Die Straßenbahn stand dabei allerdings eher im Hintergrund. Denn es wurde 110 Jahre Busverkehr in Dresden von der @dvbag gefeiert, wofür verschiedene Historische Busse (insbesondere Ikarusse) im Einsatz waren. TRAMS USED ON WEDNESDAY 3RD APRIL AT SYDNEY TRAM MUSEUM I had the privilege of driving Sydney Corridor tram R1 1979, built in 1936, on its second day back in service, after a couple of years in storage while having new leather fitted to its seats. R1 1979 was used for 10 years after its withdrawal in 1961 (when the Sydney Tramway system closed), with the sad duty of shunting around parts of scrapped trams at Randwick Workshops. After being donated to our Museum in operable but very poor condition, it was beautifully restored by our marvellous Workshops volunteers. The other tram used last Wednesday was P 1497, a Sydney crossbench tram built in 1922 but still going very well thanks to our devoted Workshop crew. FAT EDDIE’S 🍔 🍟 We could have easily had breakfast, lunch and dinner most days at the Christchurch riverside market BUT we did branch out a few times to some other recommendations given to us by our Kiwi Tour Guide Ricky. FAT EDDIE’S was one of the places on his list so we thought it only right to check it out. We found the restaurant on a balcony above the main square along with a live duo playing smooth rock music. It gave the feel of a 1950’s diner/burger joint but came with the unique view of the vintage tram going by below. We of course ordered burgers here. Crispy chicken burgers with lashings of mayo, lettuce and tomato complete with pickle in a brioche bun. On the side … CURLY FRIES. In my opinion the BEST kind of fries. Here you can see a Perth Electric Tramway Society (PETS) volunteer hard at work lounging around on one of our trams. The tram being worked on here is Adelaide tram H 372. Back in the 1980s, 372 had been fitted with a pantograph (the bow like structure you can see on modern trains for collecting power) to reduce wear and tear. Such a structure had to be removed when the tram was first acquired by PETS as the pantograph is not compatible with our network. The work being done here is fitting some wooden blocks that the bases of the trolley poles will sit on so 372 can run again. Happy Easter everyone! On the 31st of April 2024, the Perth Electric Tramway Society (PETS) had its yearly Easter barbeque. Such a night was an absolute blast! Our Easter barbeques are a great time to come together and have some good tucker. After a good feed, we then had some beautiful night rides on Melbourne tram 1017 and Perth tram 66. The feeling of being in a 100-year-old tram traveling around the forests of Whiteman Park at night is just a magical feeling. If you want to join in on a night time tram ride, you’ll need to help us out a bit as such rides are only open to volunteers. So, consider becoming a volunteer! In Whiteman Park, you can find a great diversity of trams that are operated by the Perth Electric Tramway Society (PETS). We have trams from Perth, Fremantle, Kalgoorlie, Adelaide, Ballarat, Melbourne, and Brisbane! If you’re a regular to Whiteman Park, you may have noticed it’s been a while since you’ve seen 329. This is because she has been taken out of service as she has gotten a little worn out after working so hard for so long. Rolling on past in this photo is Fremantle tram 36. Back in the olden days, major cities all across Australia had trams, including Fremantle. Trams were an integral part of getting around the lovely port city. From getting to work, heading off to do the shopping, going down to the beach, or even an outing to the movies, the trams were there to help get you around. But during the spring of 1952, Freemantle would see the closure of its tramway network. Thankfully Fremantle tram 36 was saved from the scrap yard and now sits patiently in the Perth Electric Tramway Society’s collection. But 36 is in need of restoration. This interior shot you can see here is the inside of a super special tram. This tram is Perth 66, the last tram to ever run in Perth! Its final run was on the 19th of July 1958, as competition from buses and deferred maintenance during the 1940s led to the closure of Perth’s tramways. Thankfully such beautiful trams like these are not lost to history. Perth 66 runs again in Whiteman Park!
