Sitting! One Tree Hill Vista Point, Greenwich Park. TAKEN- Wed 21st Dec'22 One Tree Hill is a high point of land that lies about 300 metres east of Observatory Hill, which has been popular with artists and visitors for centuries. It provides a gratifying and atmospheric viewpoint across the River Thames to London, especially at sunset. In the seventeenth century, it was called Five Tree Hill but has also been called Sand Hill, a reference to its sandy summit, which is now paved over. Since the eighteenth century, the name One Tree Hill was adopted because of the single prominent tree at its highest point. The current tree is a London plane that replaced its predecessor, probably an oak, which was blown down in a storm on 22 August 1848, a year of dreadful weather. There was scarcely a summer that year, along with devastating crop failures throughout the country. One Tree Hill was a popular venue for pleasure seekers during the Greenwich Fair, with a band often playing at the top. It was also deemed suitable for the main ‘sport’ of the fair – ‘tumbling’. The view has brought many artists to it, most notably J.M.W. Turner, whose painting, ‘London from Greenwich Park’, exhibited in 1809, shows a view strikingly reminiscent of today. Louis Jules Arnout painted it from a balloon in 1845, showing a very different scene. A poem was published about One Tree Hill in 1784, and a verse from it is carved into the seating along the southerly wall. This poem is ascribed to Thomas Nichols, a little-known amateur poet of that era. It is located between Broad and Walcot Streets, which both merge onto Northgate Street. Located next to the Post Office Building, the south tower (referred to as the W tower) fronts Northgate street and is prominent on Bath's skyline. The current structure was designed by George Phillips Manners. It possesses a fine example of a Sweetland Organ. The Church of St Michael's is known as St Michael's Without—it being the first church to be found outside Bath's city walls when exiting from the North Gate. The parish itself was known as St Michael's with St Paul's. In 2013, with the closure of Holy Trinity Church Queen's Square, the parish boundary grew as the two parishes were merged under St Michael's. Red On Blue. Royal Mineral Water Hospital, Bath, Somerset. TAKEN - Tue 20th Dec'22 The hospital was founded in 1738 as a general hospital for the poor in the city centre, where the frontage of its building still reads Royal Mineral Water Hospital. Thus it is known locally as "The Mineral Hospital" or "The Min". The hospital moved to a new building at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) site at Combe Park in 2019. From the 16th century, the needs of the "deserving poor" who came to take the healing waters of the Roman Baths were recognised and they were allowed free use of the waters. This attracted beggars; large numbers of people visited the city but St John's Hospital was only accessible to local residents. Proposals in 1716 for a hospital to receive them were supported by Lady Elizabeth Hastings, Henry Hoare, Joseph Jekyll, William Oliver, Beau Nash and others. The hospital was established in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital. It provided care for the impoverished sick who were attracted to Bath because of the supposed healing properties of the mineral water from the spa. The original building, designed by John Wood the Elder, was built with Bath stone donated by Ralph Allen and completed in 1742. It was enlarged in 1793 by the addition of an attic storey, and in 1860 by a second building erected on the west side of the earlier edifice. A fine pediment, in Bath stone, on the 1860 building depicts the parable of the Good Samaritan. Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Steps. Royal Albert Hall, South Kensington, London. TAKEN- Tue 13th Dec'22 The steps located on the south side of the Hall are situated on the former position of the South Kensington Royal Horticultural Society garden’s conservatory, which provided refreshments and facilities to the Hall’s visitors in the nineteenth century. The conservatory and gardens were demolished in 1889 and a road was built to encircle the Hall, with the South Steps, as they were known, leading down to Prince Consort Road. The steps as they are seen today were formed during the Hall’s redevelopment project carried out between 1998 and 2004. The works saw the original stone steps and balustrade entirely removed to allow for excavation to accommodate plant rooms, dressing rooms, an underground loading bay and other services for the venue. On 9 November 2013, ahead of the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance, the Hall’s Patron HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh attended a ceremony to rename the steps the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Steps. It has a seating capacity of 5,272. Since the hall's opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many performance genres have appeared on its stage. It is the venue for the BBC Proms concerts, which have been held there every summer since 1941. It is host to more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually, including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballet, opera, film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment, sports, awards ceremonies, school and community events, and charity performances and banquets. A further 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces. TAKEN- Tue 13th Dec'22 The Churchill Arms is a public house at 119 Kensington Church Street on the corner with Campden Street, Notting Hill, London. There has been a pub on the site since at least the late nineteenth century. Previously known as the "Church-on-the-Hill", the pub received its current name after the Second World War. It is known for its exuberant floral displays, and extravagant Christmas displays in the winter, and has been described as London's most colourful pub. The Churchill Arms is managed by Fuller's and has a Winston Churchill interior theme. The Churchill Arms claims to have been the first London pub with a Thai restaurant, having served such food since the early 1990s or earlier. The Thai restaurant is decorated with live flowers and plants. The pub is decorated with all types of things associated with Winston Churchill, and falsely claims that Churchill made wartime broadcasts from the venue. / 關於曾經的為什麼 — 與台灣的聯繫 / 前些日子意外跟我們領域在台灣的相關組織與工研院有所交集，便一同訂下線上會面，與台灣該領域的研究員、教授等討論我們領域在台灣的發展還有未來展望。 其實很幸運也很感動，會議上每個台灣資深的教授，美國博士畢業的研究員，會願意齊聚一堂聽我一個剛畢業的碩士小朋友發言，甚至還有做筆記的、問題發問的等等。 似乎以前深植著想開拓這塊領域的願望可以悄悄播下種子，儘管討論完發現還有一大段路要走，還有最基礎的教育端問題，但仍是雀躍不已，不僅是因為種子似乎有機會發芽，還有看到原來台灣有這麼一群人會站在我這裡，一起支持、一起發揚、一起努力。 自從來到英國，就有不少人問出國的動機、國外職場，還有選擇這個領域的原因。 這是一個台灣沒有的職位、台灣沒有的領域。 隨著時間推動，我的夢想已漸漸出現輪廓，從前不明白夢想究竟是什麼，但現在，大概就是能替台灣開創新的領域。 我所希望的未來，是台灣孩子能認識這個領域，接觸這個領域，不用忍受國外夜晚的孤寂、不用承受新環境的壓力、不用煩惱下一張簽證、不用領不平等的薪資、不用因為英文未到母語等級而被評估為未達實驗標準，也不用緊繃著自己，深怕隨時就失去了一切。 正因為經歷過所有，正因為還在親歷著，我才希望未來熱愛這塊領域的台灣孩子，能走在我們庇護下，安然、驕傲地成長，成為這個學科、這個領域的研究員與專家。 自由地飛、自由地闖… #uk #ukdaily #uklives #humanfactors #taiwan

Looking Up Tulips. The Tulip Staircase, Queen's House, Greenwich. TAKEN- Tue 13th Dec'22 The Tulip Staircase was an unusual feature during this period and the first of its kind. Made of ornate wrought iron, it is Britain's first geometric and unsupported staircase. Each tread is cantilevered from the wall and supported by the step below, a design invented by the mason, Nicholas Stone. Each step is interlocked along the bottom of the riser. The Great Hall is the centrepiece of the Queen's House and holds a first-floor gallery that overlooks geometric-styled black and white marble flooring. The Great Hall is recognizable and innovative for its architecture; The shape of this hall is perfect cube, measuring 40 ft in each direction. In The Corner. The Great Hall, Queen's House, Greenwich. TAKEN- Tue 13th Dec'22 Queen's House is a former royal residence built between 1616 and 1635. It was built near the now demolished Greenwich Palace, a few miles downriver from the City of London, now in the London borough of Greenwich. It presently forms a central focus of what is now the Old Royal Naval College with a grand vista leading to the River Thames. The Queen's House architect, Inigo Jones, was commissioned by Queen Anne of Denmark in 1616 and again to finish the house in 1635 by Queen Henrietta Maria. The Queen's House was commissioned by both Anne and Henrietta as a place to display artworks they had accumulated and commissioned. Queen's House is one of the most important buildings in British architectural history, due to it being the first consciously classical building to have been constructed in the country. It was Jones's first major commission after returning from his 1613–1615 grand tour of Roman, Renaissance, and Palladian architecture in Italy. Some earlier English buildings, such as Longleat and Burghley House, had made borrowings from the classical style, but the structure of these buildings was not informed by an understanding of classical precedents. Queen's House would have appeared revolutionary during this period. Although it diverges from the mathematical constraints of Palladio, Jones is often credited with the introduction of Palladianism with the construction of the Queen's House.
