In the mid-90s, TNT was the champion of Tremors. Fourth of July comes around and the lightning bugs are out? You know there’s gonna be a TNT Tremors marathon. Steaming myself on the porch one summer day, I first got a taste of this so-called “Tremors” franchise by overhearing my brother inside the neighbor’s living room: “Oh my God, this Tremors has the ass blasters worms. Those are ass blasters!” I watched Dune for the first time this summer. It had been on my long list and it was time to venture out into the Arrakis desert land. As the first sighting of this bristle-toothed land monster erupted from showers of soil, all I could think was: “Are these Dune worms ass blasters?” It turns out that, no, the Dune worms are not ass blasters. They are the Shai-Hulud, or for our intent and purposes - they are big-ass visual effects. Because it’s the comparison we deserve, but not the one we need right now. Shush, Commissioner Gordon. Are you wondering why wedding photography is so expensive? Well, I can’t speak for all the wedding photographers out there but I can speak to why I charge what I charge. Realistically it takes me multiple days to create an album that’s perfect, and even though I kick a** the day of; most of the work I do is in the post production. This photo took me about 7 min to edit. That might not sound too bad, but when there are 900-1200 images to edit…you can see how that time and value can add up. So until they invent an AI that can edit a photo up to MY standards…it is what it is. A 400-pound black bear wanders into your suburban neighborhood, climbs your porch deck, and huffs little circles of moisture against your sliding door glass as you eat breakfast. This is what you might call “exhilarating”. Well, the same feeling might apply when a VFX studio gets a project that they’re working on in real-time as it’s being filmed literally in their front yard. This was the scenario for the Baton Rouge branch of Crafty Apes. Much of the National Treasure: Edge of History series was filmed exclusively in Baton Rouge with set extension scenes sprouting up right in the Celtic Studios of Baton Rouge parking lot. Shadow and Bone’s “Grishaverse” created by Leigh Bardugo is a supreme pizza of YA fantasy elements. Three magical factions each have powers to manipulate water, fire, air (the Etherialki), wood, metal, glass, and chemicals (the Materialki), or make jigsaw pieces of the human body (the Corporalki). So what this entire universe is saying is that everybody who exists in it wields the capabilities of a VFX artist. Maintaining a darkened shadow world that also felt brooding and alive required a savvy CG presence, one that ended up producing 1,700 VFX shots in the series’ first eight episodes. You don’t have to be someone who writes Shadow and Bone fan fiction to appreciate a well-built fantasy playground, and one can anticipate that showrunner Eric Heisserer will only aspire to escalate the visual wizardry. Now, I haven’t seen footage of any VFX artists getting accidentally sucked out to the trash planet of Sakaar to fight in gladiator arenas as they’re touching up some environmental shots. I don’t think data wranglers are losing limbs to laser blasts as they change out camera equipment in a Mandalorian desert. But in the VFX industry right now, there is a cohesive perception that working without representation is a serious problem. This problem - the working conditions for thousands of employees - is being confronted with a growing mountain of voices and hard data. The IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) published an in-depth survey on March 1st that detailed the voices of VFX workers. Organizers like Mark Patch and Ben Speight are rallying for unionization.
