Itchy red eyes, noses that won’t stop running and a fear of going outdoors have set in around Denver as allergy season ramps up. 🤧 Tree pollen is very high right now, contributing to an overall high pollen count, according to the Weather Channel, and people are right to worry about symptoms hitting harder this year. “I’m sure you’ve heard everyone say ‘This is the worst allergy season ever.’ They say that every year — and they’re correct every year,” says Bill Anderson, medical director of the allergy immunology section at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “Every year is the worst allergy season.” In Colorado, allergy season starts as early as late February, according to Anderson. Spring is tree pollen season, then grass season hits in May, and in mid-August, weed season kicks off and lasts until a hard frost. And if the rock-and-roll icons weren’t enough of a draw, it was just announced today, April 25, that the seminal southern-rock jam band @widespreadpanichq will be opening the show. The Rolling Stones announced its Hackney Diamond tour, which stops in sixteen cities across the U.S and Canada, last November. The legendary musicians will perform the band’s greatest hits as well as music from their new album, Hackney Diamonds, which received a Grammy nomination for the lead single, “Angry.” Widespread Panic is just the cherry on top. It’s the first time the band will perform at Empower Field, and the show will be followed by its annual three-night run at @redrocksco from June 21-23. @mohawkamaniabob Bagnall, could easily be called “The Man of Two Thousand Mohawks.” That’s a rough estimate of how many versions of the distinctive punk hairdo Bob has created and displayed on social platforms as part of his quest to “bring smiles back one mohawk at a time,” as he puts it. On him and his wife’s street or walking their dog Cooper, Bob and his hair are by now a local fixture, one that he says his neighbors quickly embraced. His wife Julie is “the artiste,” Bob says - the secret weapon behind their massive catalogue of hair art, and the tireless creative partner who figures out the best ways to get the mohawk up and painted. Surprisingly, she has no background experience working with hair, and Bob is her only client. They’ve mostly gotten to where they are by trial and error. “When we started, it was only two inches,” Julie recalls. To stick it up, “we started with gel, but then it outgrew gel. ... Absolutely not,” says Carlo Campagna, who opened his first restaurant, @tastytoro, at 1018 East 11th Avenue last October, after working in the food industry for his entire career — over 35 years. But after Toro Food Concepts struggled during its first few months, something happened that many business owners hope for: It went viral on social media. The boost in attention was sparked by an emotional video posted on TikTok by Giselle Campagna, Carlo’s wife and Toro’s co-owner. No, we’re not talking about Jamal Murray’s epic Game 2 buzzer-beater over the Los Angeles Lakers on April 22, which put the Denver Nuggets up 2-0 in their first-round playoff series. Instead, it’s an alleged punch from one of the “Jokic Brothers” — Strahinja Jokic, the oldest — on some poor sap in the stands that has sparked international headlines. The purported scrum was caught on cellphone video and posted to TikTok by a user named @cgallegos67. They posted the clip with a caption saying, “Jokic brothers going wild.” Today, April 23, the Denver Police Department tells Westword that police are probing the incident and “actively working” to identify the person in the video who was purportedly struck by Strahinja. After teasing a uniform redesign last month, the Broncos unveiled their new jerseys on April 22. And they are terrible. Announced in a hype video that looks like every SUV commercial in the last five years, the so-called Mile High Collection is underwhelming and confusing at best. At the edge of Civic Center Park and the start of downtown Denver stands an unusual building, the eye-catching @populus_denver. The city sold the triangular-shaped lot for $2.5 million in 2017; it had previously been home to the precursor of Visit Denver and then a daycare for people using the Denver courts. But the new owners took their time coming up with just the right project for the property. Designed to mimic the bark of an aspen tree, the hotel at 240 14th Street is now taking reservations for September 2024 and beyond while construction is completed. Its exterior, built from 365 Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete panels, already has a look unlike that of any other structure in the city. The building is the country’s first carbon-positive hotel, according to developer Urban Villages, which says it has planted 70,000 trees in Gunnison County to offset emissions from construction. A sunrise in the Rocky Mountains is always profound, but especially from this perch at the edge of the Front Range. For years, I’ve been fascinated by the cruffin, aka croissant dough shaped like a muffin. The tall, flaky-crispy shell is filled with a flavored pastry cream through its core that pokes out of the top like frosting on a cupcake, and is often coated in chocolate, sugar or other toppings. I had my first cruffin around the time the now-shuttered Mr. Holmes Bakehouse popularized the item in San Francisco in 2017. My bread school instructors loved to make fun of the trendy pastry, saying it was just a taller morning bun — and a structurally unstable one, at that. Over the years, the once-trendy cruffin became a staple on bakery menus across the country, and it’s been interesting to watch its progress from trend to tradition. Colorado voters will be busy at the virtual ballot box come November. Initiatives regarding bail eligibility, abortion rights and economic impact statements are on track to qualify for the 2024 ballot; they’re now awaiting final verification from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office. If it determines that the measures qualify, they will bring Colorado’s total number of certified ballot measures up to four, joining Initiative 50. That measure, which qualified for the ballot in October, seeks to cap property tax revenue increases at 4 percent each year, requiring voter approval for the government to keep tax revenue beyond that. As of April 15, 214 proposals for citizen ballot measures had been filed, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. But very few will end up on the ballot seven months from now; 102 initiatives have already been rejected, withdrawn or expired, and 94 are still awaiting action. Fifteen measures are currently collecting petition signatures to try to qualify for the ballot. Johnny and Kasie Curiel are feeling relieved. Last month, My Neighbor Félix, which is part of Francois Safieddine’s Lotus Concepts group that also includes the ViewHouse and newly opened Wonderyard, filed a lawsuit against Kasie Curiel and @almalohidenver, the LoHi restaurant she and Johnny — both former Lotus Concepts employees — had opened in December. The legal action put the future of Alma Fonda Fina in jeopardy. But now the dispute, which hinged on a noncompete Kasie had signed in 2020, has been settled. “My Neighbor Felix and Alma Fonda Fina have resolved their dispute. My Neighbor Felix has generously agreed not to seek to enforce a noncompete clause that exists between the parties.
