First, from rock historian Richard Houghton of @spenwoodbooks, a #Who history I’ve hoped for for ages. “This Guitar Has Seconds to Live: A People’s History of The Who” captures the first-hand accounts of #Wholigans across the globe, from the band’s original home base of Shepherd’s Bush, London, in the 1950s to the Riverside Cricket Ground in Durham, UK, on July 17 this year. My first order of business was to zero in on the earliest accounts of The Who’s use of the @marshallamps stacks that #PeteTownshend is credited with inventing. All you #metalheads take note: You can thank @officialthewho for putting the earliest Marshall stacks through their paces during their days barnstorming ballrooms and clubs throughout the UK in #1965 and #1966. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 is a debut novel from Bobby Finger, the co-host of the absolutely incredible Who Weekly podcast! This is a character driven novel that takes place in the author’s home state of Texas. The Old Place tells the story of Mary Alice- she was recently forced into retirement and she doesn’t know what to do with her days. Her husband and son have both passed away and she is struggling. She’s best friends with her next door neighbor, Ellie, who also tragically lost her son. They have coffee together most mornings. Out of the blue, Mary Alice’s sister shows up late one night with shocking news. Mary Alice is reeling from the news and is forced to confront her past that she has buried deep down inside her. Mary Alice is also helping to host the town picnic and she throws herself into the planning. We get to meet some of the other locals here and they are all fun to get to know. This was a slow burn novel, but I was so into it! Mary Alice is really an enigma; she’s had so much tragedy in her life. She wasn’t a very nice person and people in the book say she was always like that. I love small town gossip and this has so many secrets and twists. The Old Place is a reference to an old ranch that’s in the sisters’ family. It plays a big role in the latter half of the book. I read the book with a few other fans of the podcast (hey wholigans!) and it’s fun to discuss with people who love the author. Thank you so much to @putnambooks and @bobbyfinger for my gifted copy.
