Here is how it went… …………………………………………………………………..…………… Title: Dark Matter Author: @blakecrouch1 Genre: Science Fiction, Suspense ………………………………………………………………………..……… Marissa: ★ ★ ★ ★ I have heard nothing but good things about this book but I was a bit hesitant to try it. I am not a huge sci-fi fan but this book did not disappoint. The writing style caught my attention right away and kept me hooked all the way through. For most of the story I was confused, but all I kept saying was: I was confused in the right way. I did feel that that book was leading up to a big ending that just didn’t happen. Although the ending wasn’t what I expected, I still loved everything about this plot line. Ricky: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After not reading many books, this book engulfed me in its story though the engaging writing style of the author and the sequence that the plot was revealed to the reader. Every step of the way, suspense was built to higher intensities with emotional moments rooted somewhere between science fiction and realism. Equal parts obligated and committed, she leaves on a community service hiking trip with a backpack of essentials and a heart full of ache. Strangers become the foundation family she needs. It’s fair to say that a book that pulls on my dead heart strings is written by an individual who gets what they’re writing. I had the opportunity to meet Kristin and she’s a lovely human. I’ll never forget her kindness and thoughtful comments. Reading this book became a must and it packs a punch of exploring grief and navigating the big feels as a new adult. From @just_talking_to_my_shelf: I really enjoyed listening to The Atlas of Us! I love emotional books and new adult novels so this was the perfect mood read for me. “I can’t give you heaven, but I can make hell feel good sometimes.” This was a buddy read with @mellies.endless.tbr Usually I’m the one ahead in my buddy reads, this go I was the slacker😂 Loved being able to chat with you about this one because I had thoughts I needed to vent about😂😂 😈🖤⛓️Captured - Lauren Biel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ He told her to be a good girl and I forgot for a second what Alex had done up until that point😅 Let me start by saying, I’m not excusing the behavior in this book. The stuff Alex and his brother got into was very wrong, no matter their upbringing. That being said, early on Alex hints at not wanting to be the way he is. Darkness sunk its claws into him and it was all he ever knew, until Ophelia. In his own twisted way, Alex cared for her and did what he could to protect her… while still holding her captive. The relationship Alex had with his mother allowed him to bond with Ophelia. There was a connection between them due to their traumatic upbringings, especially with their horrible relationships with their fathers. Alex also saw himself in her which only deepened his affection, even if he was afraid of it. I felt very conflicted about Alex, there was clearly good in him but it extended to making Ophelia’s situation somewhat more bearable; instead of just letting her go. WERBUNG, REZENSIONSEXEMPLAR 𝐑𝐄𝐙𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 🌸 Zusammen mit der lieben Christina von @fuchs_liebt_buecher habe ich „𝐇𝐲𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧“ von Rebekka Eder gelesen. Danke für den schönen Buddyread! 🫶🏼 Das Buch ist Mitte April im wunderbaren @rowohltverlag erschienen, umfasst knapp 500 Seiten und kostet 14,00 EUR. 🅜🅔🅘🅝🅤🅝🅖 Das war nicht ganz mein Buch ... leider. Das lag aber weder am Schreibstil der Autorin, noch am Setting oder den Charakteren. Ich mochte Alba, ich fand Kasimir ganz großartig. Die Ländereien der fünf Schwestern habe ich mir wunderschön vorgestellt und ich fand es sehr spannend und berührend, wie die Sprache der Blumen hier im Mittelpunkt stand. Zeitlich finden wir uns hier mitten in der Märzrevolution wieder. Das Thema fand ich spannend gewählt und gut recherchiert. Generell hat die Geschichte sich stark an wahren Begebenheiten orientiert. Darauf geht die Autorin auch im Nachwort ein. Ich hatte mit dem Buch aber ein paar Probleme, die zum einen mit dem Aufbau der Geschichte, zum anderen mit meiner persönlichen Einstellung zu tun hatten. Zum ersten und zweiten Abschnitt habe ich mir notiert, dass ich mich nichtwissend fühle und dass mir die Geheimnisse etwas überhandnehmen. Ich finde es schon mal spannend, wenn man auch beim Lesen eines Romans lange im Dunkeln tappt ... das braucht es auch, um bei mir den Drang zum Weiterlesen zu wecken ... aber hier gab es anfangs nur Familiengeheimnisse und jede Menge Zwiespalt zwischen den Schwester, den man aber nicht nachvollziehen konnte, weil man so viel einfach erst im Laufe der Geschichte erfahren hat. Das hat dazu geführt, dass ich lange eine gewisse Distanz zu den Charakteren empfunden habe. Und mir war das Buch persönlich auch einfach zu düster bzw. es gab außer Alba und Kasimir keine andere zwischenmenschliche Beziehung, die nicht von Intrigen und nicht gerade korrektem Verhalten geprägt war ... ich weiß, dass ein Roman auch von solchen Intrigen lebt und wohldosiert finde ich das auch wieder klasse .. aber auch das hat mir hier leider überhandgenommen. Daher kann ich schweren Herzens nur 3 | 5 🌟 geben. FRAGE 🌸 HABT IHR SCHON EIN BUCH DER AUTORIN GELESEN?

Völlig überraschend habe ich bei @morawabuch diesen Roman gewonnen. "Kaiserwald" von Anja Jonuleit Vielen Dank für den Gewinn und gemeinsam mit @martinasbuchwelten habe ich die Geschichte gelesen. Auf zwei Zeitebenen wird das Verschwinden von Rebecca erzählt. Penelope, ihre Tochter kommt nach ihrem Verschwinden zu Wort und wir lesen, wie sie mit dieser Situation umgeht. In der Gegenwart erhält Mathilda eine Stimme. Wie genau sie mit dem Verschwinden zutun hat oder in Zusammenhang steht, erfahren wir im Laufe des Buchs. Die Story punktet für mich mit der eigenwilligen Erzählweise. Mit dem Handlungsaufbau, der Dramaturgie. Immer wieder erhascht man einen Blick auf das Wesentliche, aber dann entschwindet es auch wieder in den Wirren der Vergangenheit. Mein Eindruck: Mein Tipp vorab: Teil 2 "Sonnenwende" erscheint am 23. Oktober. Entscheidet selbst ob ich gleich lesen anfangt oder noch warten möchtet. Mich hat die Geschichte recht schnell gepackt. Der Wechsel der Erzählperspektiven hat mich nicht gestört und ich habe mich auch schnell daran gewöhnt. Die Autorin verpackt, gekonnt eine/zwei Familiengeschichten und einige andere sehr spannende Themen. Dazu noch das Verschwinden einer Frau. Jenes wird durch einen Brief wieder ans Licht gezerrt und damit soll der Wahrheit auf die Spur gekommen werden. Ich bin wirklich sehr gespannt, wie das ganze weitergeht. This is one of those books that’s fun and entertaining while you read it, but will most likely forget in a month 🙈. It’s a feel-good, heartwarming story that’s perfect for summer. I enjoyed the small town setting with their small town traditions. I liked the beginning of Sage and Fisher’s relationship and the deal they made to help each other, but it’s a SLOW burn. The author did a fabulous job though building up the tension! This book will definitely make you laugh. Between the dialogue (I love when characters are sarcastic), ALL the animals, and the events that happen, you’ll be smiling the whole time. Book 28 of 2024 📚 Icebreaker - Hannah Grace Myself and @thelibraryofmills chose Icebreaker as April’s buddy read and I was honestly so nervous after reading so many negative reviews and opinions but also how hyped this book was (I was so confused on how to feel pre read). The first 20% was rather difficult to get through because it was living up to its negative reputation and I got the vibe it would be like marmite - you either love it or hate it. But, I did grow to almost enjoy it and will admit, it did get better but I don’t understand the hype. I was honestly BEYOND confused at the character dumping in the first few chapters, there were too many people, too much information and I didn’t know who’s who. It felt quite forced with way too much detail. I refused to call Anastasia ‘Stassie’, it gave pick me girl vibes and I just pretended it was a typo the whole way through. Her character definitely developed but at such a slow pace. At first, I really did not like her, she annoyed me and I actually felt her story line was a little forced. Towards the last 40% of the book, I did start to understand her a little more which made her more tolerable. However, the epilogue completely ruined it for me; (without spoilers) I felt it completely contradicted her narrative and it actually made me cringe. I will admit, Nate grew on my quite quickly. He has the kindest heart and the most caring soul. He never came across as the typical bad boy sports captain, he was just simply beautiful. I have never hated a fictional character more than Aaron and I think this saved this books rating for me. Grace wrote his character so well which meant there was raw emotion from me. The topics which were highlighted were sometimes hard to digest but it did mean there was no third-act conflict, the whole plot (not the strongest plot, I will admit) had its ups and downs. The frenemies to loves trope is not one of my favourites but I did start to find myself rooting for Nate and Anastasia. May has started off intense. I've been traveling between Leeds, Manchester and Bradford every day so my physical reading has been non existent. DIFFERENT SEASONS Stephen King ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Swipe for blurbs. This was @memydogandbooks April King readalong, and a re-read for me after I first picked it up 20 years ago! RITA HAYWORTH AND SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟/5 Just one of the best things King has ever written, in a little over 100 pages. The film does absolute justice to the story (though I'm pretty sure Red was originally a redhead, and Andy is supposed to be short 😂) and it lives rent-free in my heart. It's amazing how much is packed into such a short story, given how long some of King's books go on (I'm looking at you, The Dead Zone). Andy Dufresne is almost deified the way Red tells it, because he represents hope when life is at its most hopeless. And that's what the whole novella is about, and how it ends. With hope. APT PUPIL ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 In stark contrast to Shawshank, there's no hope to be found in Apt Pupil. It's a study of darkness, and it only gets darker as it goes on. As the longest of the four stories by far, it's heavy. Todd scares me a lot more than Dussander as he sets everything in motion, and their association just gets creepier. I'd forgotten almost everything about this story except that ending, which haunts me. THE BODY ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 The first half of this is 3⭐, the second half is a solid 5⭐. It's the classic coming of age story, but has so much beauty and melancholy as the boys get further into their journey and Gordie becomes more reflective. Chris is just a wonderful character. THE BREATHING METHOD ⭐⭐⭐/5 Wow. I mean... I read this 20 years ago and didn't remember any part of it. I think I repressed it. Only in Stephen King's mind could the Lamaze Method = horror story... The same family but slightly different. The names are changed but always starts with the same letter. Slight past events change but still fundamentally the same. The story spans a course of 2000 years, & being someone that loves historical fiction it certainly covers a vast amount. Boyne is an absolute wordsmith. His writing is exquisite and grabs me in a way that no one else does. I found this book a very much Boyne read but also so astonishingly different to his other books I’ve read. Around 80% through I did find it became slightly repetitive which was unfortunate but then it did pick up again. I’m not overly sure about the ending but with the writing as it is it keeps you captive to read on. Another sensational read. 🗣️ have you read it? Emma by Jane Austen QOTD Any weekend plans? I'm hoping to rest and relax I read this as part of a group buddy read. I loved all the characters, and it kept me guessing who Emma would eventually marry. It had to happen because she said she would never marry. Wer mir folgt, weiß, dass ich im Prinzip keine Beiträge außerhalb von Rezensionen poste. Doch Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel. Und weil sich die liebe Særah jedesmal so freut, sobald jemand unter dem Hashtag #covermeer etwas einstellt, tue ich ihr doch einfach mal diesen Gefallen. Und ich habe ja mehr als genug Bücher zum Thema und mit passendem Cover. Um ehrlich zu sein hätte ich noch ein paar weitere Reihen füllen können. Manche fand ich nicht ganz so passend (noch mehr Meerjungfrauen unter Wasser), andere habe ich vergessen (Offene See) und wieder andere hatten einfach zu wenig das Meer im Fokus (Coverbilder von Neuseelands grünen Buchten rund ums Meer). Und dann gäbe es noch viel mehr Bücher mit Meeresbezug, jedoch mit anderen Covern (wann kommen die Piraten an die Reihe?). Ein Wort zu ein paar der meerigen Werke: "Der Untergang der Wager" wird momentan im #buddyread mit @meer.literatur gelesen; "Walfahrt" ist der Titel ihrer ersten Leserunde (da diese erst Mitte Mai startet, ist noch ist Zeit mitzumachen!). Eigene Beiträge gibt es zu folgenden guten Büchern schon von mir: "Das Buch vom Meer", "Ferdinandea", "Der Zorn des Meeres", John Marr und andere Matrosen", "Der Flussregenpfeifer" und "Allein auf dem Meer". Sehr ans Herz legen kann ich euch auf jeden Fall noch die neuseeländische Booker-Preis-Gewinnerin Keri Hulme mit ihrem fantastischen Werk "Unter dem Tagmond". Für einen Beitrag ist es einfach zu viele Jahre her, dass ich es gelesen habe. Aber es bleibt im Gedächtnis und lohnt sich auf jeden Fall! Kommen wir zuletzt noch zu "Windstärke 17"; das erscheint ja erst in knapp zwei Wochen (15. Mai) und da ich am 18.05. zu ihrer Lesung gehe, wird es am 20. eine besondere Rezension geben. ~ Book Review: Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez ~ ~ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 ~ I read this book as part of the April BOTM with #obssessedbuddyreads! I absolutely loved reading this book. It was fun and just the perfect summer read! The story follows Emma and Justin as they navigate their respective love lives, which exist but do not exist. Somehow, both of them always end up with people who, after breaking up with them, find their soulmate in the next person they meet or date. Determined to turn this around, Emma, with encouragement from her best friend, reaches out to Justin through his reddit threads, and together, they hatch a plan to defeat the curse. I love how this story had its ups and downs, but the characters were deep with issues lying under the surface. The author did not just gloss over them but actually took time out to address some of the issues. Emma has abandonment issues and a fear of never being enough thanks to her mother, and Justin is dealing with the after effects of his mother's decisions as well as taking care of three younger siblings. Of course, the story is cliched and predictable in some ways, but this is sometimes just what is needed. A book mixed with both seriousness and fun and an all's well that ends well vibe until the very end. I quite enjoyed this book and am glad to have read it along with some wonderful people in the community. This is a building where nothing goes unseen. A murder has occurred tonight, but who holds the key to the answers? Jess plans a sper of the moment trip to visit her half brother Ben in Paris. He said he would wait up for her but when she arrives late in the night, he is nowhere to be seen and no one seems to want to get into his apartment. It all seems very strange. When she can’t get a hold of him and no one has seen him, Jess gets worried and starts asking questions that no one else in the building wants to answer. She soon realises she is not wanted here and she doesn’t know who to trust or believe. I really enjoyed Lucy’s writing and found it so easy to read. She had me hooked from the beginning, with a whodunnit from the start. It made you question everything and her invested in Ben and Jess’s safety. I had a few theories as the story went on but so with some good twists and turns, none of them planned out as I thought. I’m really looking forward to reading more of her books throughout the rest of the year. ‘“It’s not a crime to feel joy, even when things seem hopeless.”’ ~Divine Rivals~ . . . I finally got round to reading this beaut of a book in April (thank you @trrcbookclub for choosing it as the monthly pick) and I really enjoyed it. I find that Rebecca Ross has a very melancholy writing style, so only read this if you’re ready to cry- in both a heart aching and heartwarming, bittersweet sort of way 🙈😂 ‘Divine Rivals’ had a really steady and gentle romance in it, from office rivals to magical pen pals to possible friends to more, and it was so sweet to see these characters open up to one another whilst the world was falling to pot around them. This book definitely focused more on the characters feelings then the overall fantasy world and plot, but I’m really looking forward to both of these areas expanding in the next book! 5⭐️ . . . What did you think of this one? With everything that is going on in the world at the moment, this quote really hit me hard. Het vliegtuig stort neer en er is maar één overlevende, Eddie/Edward. Hij wordt opgevangen door zijn oom en tante en heel lief buurmeisje Shay. Het verhaal is geschreven in het verleden en heden. Zo leer je de personages steeds iets meer kennen. Het verhaal is heftig maar wel mooi. Je moet het eigenlijk gewoon zelf ervaren. Meine Erwartungen waren ein wenig hoch was den Spannungs- und Psychofaktor anging, doch leider kam das hier nicht an bei mir. Als Erstes hat mich Millie extrem genervt, sie war für mich unauthentisch und ja klar in Thrillern muss ja mal jemand einen Blödsinn machen, wo sich der Leser fragt:"Wieso macht sie das ich würd mir vor Angst in die Hose machen?" Aber Millie wirkte einfach nur unbelehrbar und dumm. Ihre Handlungen waren nicht nachvollziehbar. Und leider waren auch die Nebendarsteller nicht überzeugend. Zusätzlich fand ich die Story schwach, der Gänsehauteffekt hat mir hier gefehlt. Manchmal dachte ich uh jetzt geht es los, wurde aber wieder enttäuscht. Ich finds so schade, weil der Schreibstil gefällt mir so gut und die Idee hinter der Reihe auch, aber bei Band 2 hat es für mich einfach nicht hingehaut. Trotzdem werde ich Band 3 lesen, aber auch eher wegen Band 1 und weil mich interessiert was da passiert. 🌺 ARC Review 🌺 The Paradise Problem By @christinalauren Publication Date: May 14, 2024 When Christina Lauren writes a new book, it’s an automatic add to my tbr, without even reading the description! The engaging characters, banter, spicy scenes, and laugh out loud moments make CLo’s books the quintessential romcom. Having the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of The Paradise Problem is a highlight of my Bookstagram journey. The Paradise Problem contains many of my favorite tropes with a billionaire professor and a starving artist in a marriage of convenience attending an island wedding with just one bed. But the terms of an astronomical trust fund and years of perpetuated deception to his family, lead to Liam and Anna attending his sister’s island destination wedding. Let me just say that Liam’s parents are utterly appalling with his brother’s constant need to one up Liam and attempts to gain his father’s approval at turns heartbreaking and maddening. Often an outside observer can perceive motivations and connections that those in the relationships miss, and Anna offered her insights into the behaviors of Liam’s brother and advice on how to change their interactions. I loved that she cared to help Liam connect with his brother when their father just used them against each other. Liam’s sister was just the sweetest and her immediate acceptance of Anna despite her parents snubbing, made me like her all the more. Also, the authors’ reference to Twilight’s Isle Esme lit up my fangirl heart! I love CLo’s writing, but what kept me from giving it five stars is the underlying premise based on the lies about their marriage. I found it improbable that a man as well connected and controlling as Liam’s father wouldn’t have intervened in their marriage of convenience well before they showed up for this wedding, almost five years after the fact. I still highly recommend this book and believe that my noted concerns are more of a me issue. It's a subject that I find pretty fascinating, and the people and the cases discussed in this book were all really interesting. If I have one complaint, it's that I found some of the in depth medical terminology was too in depth for me, but that's what I get for picking up a book written by the world's most famous neurologist I suppose. My ignorance is on me 🙌 I'm here to learn. My impressions were that I was left impressed by Oliver Sacks. His obvious caring nature and ability to see the person behind the condition shone through and I loved that. I'm looking forward to reading more of his books. The house they're viewing was once the home of a well-known psychiatrist, Dr. Adrienne Hale, who went missing years ago. They are in a very remote area, with no cell service, so when their realtor doesn't show up, and the snow starts falling hard, the couple find themselves snowed in and alone...or maybe not. This was a page turner! The story was told from the POV of Tricia in the present, and Dr. Hale 4 years ago. There are also Dr. Hales patient tape transcripts that Tricia is listening to. Each chapter gives so much information and clues as to what could be going on but leaves you with more questions than answers (in a good way!) Do you like to buddy read books? (buddy reading is when you read a book at the same time as a friend - or multiple friends - often deciding on certain chapters to read each day) ⚔️🛡️ I recently did a buddy read of SLEEPING SPELLS AND DRAGON SCALES with Kate, my almost ten-year-old. It's the first time I've buddy read with my own child and it was really fun! I loved chatting about the chapters with her and hearing her predictions. The author recently came to do a visit at Kate's school, so she was especially excited when we got this book in the mail! This was a really sweet middle grade book about a girl managing her Type 1 Diabetes and her old friend turned reluctant school project partner who can't seem to stay awake or play soccer like he used to, but can't figure out why. I loved seeing Liam and Alaina rediscover their friendship and help each other through their struggles. Their friendship was so special. I also liked the chronic illness representation and discussions surrounding them. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the fairy tale theme woven throughout, both real fairy tales and ones the students created. It added a lovely flair of magic to the story. In true me-fashion, as soon as I hit the halfway point I couldn't stop reading so I finished before Kate did. I'm excited to hear her final thoughts once she's done! *Thank you to @wendyswore and @shadowmountainpub for sending me an ARC and a finished copy of this book to review!
