Meet the UK’s last remaining species of wild feline: the Scottish wildcat! Another massive highlight of my visit to Shepreth Wildlife Park was seeing their family of Scottish wildcats. The family consists of dad Raymond (in the second image), mum Canna and their four kittens born last year. It was a real treat to see and photograph these beautiful cats, as I do have something of a soft spot for them – which is saying something, as there isn’t a species of wild feline that I don’t love! Despite looking like domestic cats and being closely related to them, these guys are different in several ways; their tails are thicker than a domestic cat’s and their stripe markings are bolder, but undoubtedly the most notable difference between domestic cats and Scottish wildcats is the latter’s temperament; as beautiful as they are, they are every bit as wild as their name suggests and can be extremely aggressive. Historically, these cats lived throughout the UK, but over the centuries have been persecuted so heavily that the only remaining wild populations can be found in the Scottish highlands. They are often referred to as the ‘Highland tiger’. A major threat to those that remain today is interbreeding with feral cats. Today, there are only a few hundred Scottish wildcats left in the wild and they are a critically endangered species. There is some good news though; several parks throughout the UK, including Shepreth, are part of a nationwide conservation effort to increase the numbers of Scottish wildcats and restore wild populations. Another extremely rare species I was very much hoping to see at Hamerton Zoo last week was the oncilla – and my luck was in! The oncilla, also known as a tiger-cat, is a beautiful species of small cat that is native to Central America and can range into Brazil. A fully-grown adult only weighs roughly between 1.5 and 3 kilograms. They are sadly classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and being hunted for their fur. Despite their small size, like all cats they are formidable hunters. Apparently very little is known about their hunting habits in the wild, but we do know they tend to pick small prey such as rodents, small birds and reptiles. Hamerton Zoo is home to one female oncilla who, I was told, is often referred to simply as ‘Little Miss’ or ‘Little Madam’ by her keepers. Indeed, she seemed like a feisty little character and getting this image of her took an extraordinary amount of patience on my part, but I’m so pleased to have got it! 'Tis the season! Saw this lil' sweetie crossing by m140 just after seeing one of the biggest snapping turtles I've seen in the area crossing in farm land. (Snapper was a little too big for comfort, but she was moving pretty quickly on her own). These little boogers are moving to lay their eggs, so watch for them. If you're comfortable with it and want to help them, remember to always place them on the side of the road they are facing so they can make their way home and lay their eggs! On the second day of my trip away earlier this week I visited Shepreth Wildlife Park! I had visited this park once before, a couple of years ago; it’s a small but very lovely little park housing some fantastic animals, some of which are quite rarely-seen in other UK zoos. One of those was this handsome little character: Cesar the white-nosed coati! Coatis are a small, omnivorous, largely arboreal mammal in the same family as the raccoon. They are mainly native to Central and South America and some parts of the US as well. The white-nosed coati is a subspecies that is only housed in a small handful of zoos here in the UK, and Cesar here was one of the main reasons I wanted to revisit Shepreth. This little man only recently arrived at the park from Vienna Zoo in Austria, but already seems to be settling well and was extremely confident and active. Say hello to Chunky! This lovely boy is a mainland or common wombat who lives at Hamerton Zoo. In fact, Hamerton is one of only two zoos in the whole of the UK to house wombats, so when Chunky here emerged from his house in the late afternoon for a wander around (and a dig!) I leapt at the chance to see and photograph him! Isn’t he gorgeous? Again, I chatted to one of the keepers and learned that Chunky was in fact born at Hamerton; his parents are called Albert and Wanda, and live in another area of the zoo. Over the last couple of days, I’ve been away visiting a couple of zoos up in Cambridgeshire and now I’ve got lots of images to share! This little trip included another visit to Hamerton Zoological Park, where one of the main highlights of the day was seeing these guys – the cheetah cubs! These beautiful cubs were born back in October 2023 to mum Jetts (in the final image) and dad Barney. Now six months old, the cubs were a true joy to watch; they spent seemingly the whole day outside playing, running around and cuddling up with their mum, even in the day’s drizzle. I got chatting to a couple of the cat keepers and was told that two of the cubs are males, and two females. They all seem just as lively and playful as each other, and nosey too – whenever one would go off to play by themselves or see where Jetts was going, the others would follow immediately, like rockets! Meet the ‘pig-deer’! Another major reason for my visit to Whipsnade Zoo earlier this week was to check out the zoo’s new Monkey Forest area. Opened to the public over the Easter holidays, Monkey Forest is home to four Southeast Asian species. While sightings of the area’s primate residents were fairly thin on the ground (I think it may have been too windy for them as they stayed indoors!), I did get to see the two ungulate species with whom the monkeys share their new home – the first of those was the babirusa! The new Monkey Forest area is home to two Sulawesi babirusa named Riko and Jaya (a big thanks to @max_blundell for letting me know their names!), who share their space with a family of Francois langurs. Sulawesi babirusa, which are classed as Vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN Red List, are unique-looking members of the pig family native to Indonesia that are also known as ‘pig-deer’. In the wild, they live in dense tropical forests, and they often follow troops of monkeys and pick up bits and pieces of food that are dropped from the canopy – a dynamic cleverly replicated at the zoo by having the babirusa and langurs share the same habitat. Majestic Mila, on watch a few weeks ago! From what I’ve seen, the pride seem to really favour the rockier of the two high mounds at Lion Lookout to, well, look out over the park. Panda on patrol! It was lovely to see young male red panda Hikaro climbing around the branches in his and Wanmei’s habitat earlier this week. I was passing by the serval family’s habitat as they were being fed, and managed to get these photos of stunning sisters Shinga (first) and Kutamba! I was especially pleased to get Kutamba on camera, as she’s generally the most timid of the ‘kittens’. Ikongo the handsome male fossa was very active yesterday, and I was thrilled to bits to see and photograph him! I was lucky enough to see and photograph a few of Port Lympne’s small carnivore species today! One individual was Namuu the gorgeous female Pallas’ cat, who I noticed spying on me (and everyone else it seemed) from under a bush! I got chatting to a staff member and was told that apparently, since her arrival from the Cotswold Wildlife Park late last year, Namuu has proved herself to be a very nosey character! I was also told that she and Atlan (who didn’t show his face today) are getting on well and are even sharing the same nest box, which was fantastic to hear! The many faces of Tai Wada! Tai Wada is one of Howletts’ stunning male clouded leopards. I got a huge surprise on Tuesday morning in the form of these two gorgeous characters – meet Mogli (first image) and Tengui (second and third), two of the resident Malayan tapirs at Port Lympne! The reason I say I was surprised is because the tapirs at the park are usually very elusive and can be a real challenge to see; their habitat is both very large and very dense with foliage, mimicking their natural forest environment and providing these large, beautiful creatures with plenty of opportunities to hide. It was brilliant to see and photograph this beautiful girl after so long: Amba the Amur tigress! Amba here now resides down at Carnivore Territory near the bottom of the park, where she is (very slowly) being introduced to male tiger Pasha. I got chatting to a member of staff and was told that apparently, even though Amba really likes him, young Pasha still needs to learn some manners around her. I was down at Port Lympne today! It was great to see the lion pride again, and I was even able to get some photos of handsome Hunter! Earlier this week at Hertfordshire Zoo I was lucky enough to catch this little character on camera: one of the zoo’s gorgeous pygmy marmosets! Pygmy marmosets are the smallest species of monkey in the world; adults only get up to about 100 grams. They are native to the Amazon rainforest in South America, where they live in small-to-medium-sized troops. Hertfordshire Zoo is home to a small family of them – mum Bella, dad Nippet, and their offspring – who all reside in the Rainforest House. Yesterday saw me make my first visit of the year to Hertfordshire Zoo – formerly known as Paradise Wildlife Park! I was very much looking forward to going back to the park following their rebranding, and had a good day as always. There are some new faces on-site, one of whom is seen in the first image in this post! A very handsome young male red panda named Ash arrived from the Welsh Mountain Zoo not too long ago as a new companion for the beautiful Tilly (in the second image). Ash, who’s only a year old, seems like a very active little chap and he was surprisingly challenging to get photos of at first as he was constantly on the go for much of the day! Towards the end of the day though I managed to catch him up in the treetops chowing down on some bamboo.
