The onion harvest has officially begun, starting with the Blush onions. This variety is a cross between a red and a white onion giving it a gorgeous blush color to the skin. It’s both spicy and sweet making it a well rounded onion with big flavor. It was well received by grandma Hilda as you can see in the 2nd photo. This is a half a row of harvest, we still have five and a half rows to go with Walla Walla, Spanish Sweets, Ringmaster, Red Racer, and Patterson. In addition, our shallots are absolutely huge this year and will be harvested this week as well (see 3rd photo). So it’s 31 degrees out now. We are expecting lows in the single digits here in the texas hill country Sunday morning and Monday morning. Move your pots indoors, perennials and roses mulch heavily. 4-5 inches at least. Especially around the crown. This is an exception to the rule of mulching the crown. As soon as this hard freeze is past then we will pull the mulch back from the crown. Make sure the ground is moist. Dry soils permit cold air to penetrate the soil. Tomatoes are to be shared. These two plants, celebrity and early girl, planted at the end of August just keep on sharing. They’ve been through 3 freezes and just keep on flowering and setting fruit. They are outdoors protected only by a sheet. Now I’m fond of these two and I’m going protect them as long as they continue to set fruit. Grandkids love em. Picked a little early but that’s ok. Have to ripen on the window sill.😀 Fertilized a month ago with Wildroot 8-2-4/humate complete. Today I began picking the first of the purple podded shelling peas. I do love the purple peas and beans cause they are so much easier to find than the green ones. I will begin blanching them and putting them into the freezer. It looks like it is gonna be a good year for peas! I used @wildrootorganic Mycorrhizal Fungi and inoculate powder in an effort to ensure all the peas in the pod would grow to maturity.
