On May 8th, join us for a discussion and walkthrough at the Grey Art Museum, NYU. In conjunction with the current exhibition “Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962,” guest curator Debra Bricker Balken and Al Held Foundation executive director Daniel Belasco will highlight the unique period in which Held found himself in Paris among a bustling circle of American expat artists. This group founded and exhibited at the cooperatively run Galerie Huit (1950–1956). Several of Held’s gestural paintings from this period are on view in the exhibition, which runs through July 20th. American Vogue, under the editorship of Jessica Daves, reported all the important happenings from around the globe, including the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome! In celebration of the games, they featured both “the vivacity of the new Italian fashions” and the best of Italian film in the magazine; all photographed by that “young American painter-photographer, William Klein.” Klein’s “untrammeled, delighted view of the city” was unsurprising, particularly given he had also published a book of his photographs of the city. After serving in the army, he relocated to France where he studied painting under Fernand Léger and began experimenting with abstract art. 'THEOTHERHALF' How the Other Half Lives: Studies among the Tenements of New York (1890) is an early publication of photojournalism by Jacob Riis, documenting squalid living conditions in New York City slums in the 1880s. The photographs served as a basis for future "muckraking" journalism by exposing the slums to New York City's upper and middle classes. “Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962” is now open to the public at @nyugrey. Curated by @dbbalken and Lynn Gumpert, the exhibition presents 130 paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, textiles, and works on paper by 70 artists living in France during that period, “providing a fresh perspective on a creative ferment too often overshadowed by the contemporaneous ascendency of the New York art scene.” Though not included in the show, #RobertRauschenberg was one of many U.S. veterans to move to Paris after World War II on the GI Bill. He arrived in 1948—the same year as @ellsworthkellystudio, #ShinkichiTajiri, and #WilliamKlein—and enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he met painter and fellow student @susanweilk. Weil and Rauschenberg returned to America before the end of the year to attend #BlackMountainCollege. For others, Paris represented new opportunities for discovery, experimentation, and self-realization. The exhibition runs through July 20, 2024, in the Grey Art Museum’s new, expanded space at 18 Cooper Square.
