Laina previously held internships at Crowe, Cloudflare, and most recently at Baker Tilly where she will be returning after graduation as a Municipal Advisory Finance Consultant. "My internship at Baker Tilly was super impactful and unlike anything I had previously done, as I was able to work on engagements that would directly help benefit local communities and areas that I grew up in. By being staffed on client engagements consistently throughout my internship, I got a glimpse of what it would be like working as an entry-level consultant and now have a better idea of what to anticipate when transitioning into my full-time role." Woman of the week! 💁♀️💪🏼💕 This week it’s Lydia Ourahmane who featured at the Venice Biennale 2024 with her work “Sync”. Born in 1992 in Saïda, currently based in Algiers and Barcelona, Lydia’s multidisciplinary practice addresses spirituality, contemporary geopolitics, migration, and the intricate legacies of colonialism. Drawing inspiration from personal narratives, Lydia’s work delves into themes of surveillance, logistics, and bureaucratic processes, examining how these forces shape our lives and environments. “Sync” is a participatory installation and sound composition. Positioned in one of its 24 chairs, participants witness their heartbeats amplified through contact microphones, creating a mesmerising echo chamber effect. “Sync” offers an immersive encounter where physical proximity merges with collective resonance, prompting deep reflections on interconnectedness and the transient nature of time. Lydia also has a work in the Arsenale, titled “Entrance”. In recreating her Algiers apartment, she found solace in redefining ‘home’ during the pandemic. Entrance (1901–2021) tells a tale of two doors, each bearing witness to Algeria’s history—French occupation, Civil War, and the struggle for independence. Ms. Montessori was an Italian physician who pioneered educational methods which are still foundational to this day. Some of the methods she championed include student-driven learning, hands on learning experiences, and child-centered classrooms. Ms. Montessori was also one of the first education researchers to devise groundbreaking methods for working with students with learning disabilities. She challenged the early 1900’s societal norm which held that intelligence was fixed at birth. Thank you to Maria Montessori for bringing greater equity and empathy into the classroom!
