The colours of Francois Peron National Park ... it's honestly so hard to fathom that Steep Point and Cape Peron are even related when the colours of either side of Shark Bay are so vastly different! We camped at Big Lagoon for 2 nights and whilst the first day we battled the flies - for some miraculous reason they disappeared with the cloud cover on the second afternoon and the sky exploded in the most epic sunset, complete with a huge pod of dolphins. The first caravan park after a free camp at the beach always feels amazing... showers plus we had GRASS which means we can clean the floor without having to worry about the sand and dirt being walked right back in! But Dongara/Port Denison was bliss for other reasons as well - we had sunset ocean views from our site AND the park put on a free pancake breaky. Bunbury for an epic free camp! We booked this 'car park' camping permit through Bunbury Council for $0 and had OCEAN VIEWS. We watched the sun go down from our camp chairs and it was only a short walk across the road to hit the sand. Could this be our favourite absolutely free camp of the trip? The girls (especially Char) loved the dolphin centre but unfortunately no wild dolphin sightings for us (wait till we share Mandurah though! More than made up for it ๐คฉ๐ฌ). Augusta is the answer! What was the question? ๐ No, that's a joke, but seriously - the first place we left and wished we had more time. It could've been the fact we had what the locals told us was an EXTREMELY rare day... they regularly get winds up to 100km/h but we had not a breath. It also apparently gets cold - it was a stunning cloudless, 26 degree day. Out the front of our caravan site they were catching fish as Justin packed up the van, one eye twitching. And just look at that sunrise if we had time for a paddleboard with the resident dolphin pod we saw hanging round!! Next time we'll know. Stay longer in Augusta. On the way in we stopped at Pemberton to check out the Tramway and Pemberton Pool as well as a pretty special meeting with a monster Ray at Hamelin Bay. And on the way out was a walk up the highest lighthouse on mainland Australia - Cape Leeuwin (a favourite for both the girls). Next up... EASTER!!!!!! And our besties fly in from QLD today so we might be MIA for a bit - have a great long weekend all! That forever saved Instagram post finally in real life ๐๐ Denmark, Elephant Rocks, Greens Pool and Ocean Beach... WOW. The natural beauty blew us away (although that water is like ice to swim in) but Denmark itself was super surprising! Picked up the best little haul of local produce including coffee, cheese, chocolate, meat, sauce and beer and wine. The Whaling Station was the last operating in Australia - they didnโt stop until 1978 ๐คฏ Equally somber was the Padre White lookout overlooking the Harbour where 30,000 young men saw their last sight of Australian shores as they headed to Gallipoli in 1914. Unpopular opinion... we didn't rate Wave Rock ๐คทโโ๏ธ After we left Lucky Bay we spent a $15 night at Munglinup Beach before a big 200 odd km day off the Coast to Wave Rock. It IS a cool rock! But personally we thought the kms/Diesel may have been better spent elsewhere ๐ Could be just us? On the way back to the coast though we found a @hipcampau that redeemed the detour! Mondurah Escape is a small winery with some great sites and flushing toilet facilities. The girls were allowed to eat as many grapes off the vines as they liked - they'd just ripened as we arrived and were so delicious and sweet. Le Grand Beach Campground or Lucky Bay Campground? We couldnโt decide so split our stay between both! And weโre still on the fenceโฆ Le Grand is flat, only has 12 sites, is much MUCH closer to the beach (we had the short walkway right in front of our site #8) and less seaweed. But Lucky Bay is LUCKY BAY! Someone voted it #1 beach in the world apparently! It was amazing when the sun came out and the campground is 40 odd sites so plenty of other people to make friends with. We spent our days driving down to the end to set up for hours of beachtime under the car awning and in the water. โจโจIf we had our time again to chooseโฆ weโd still do both! The end of the Eyre ๐ holy we loved this Peninsula! Finished with a cracker at Point Brown - the only actual FREE $ camp we did. The road in had a few corrugations but must have had a grade as Wikicamps will have you believe it's horrible (it's fine!). Checked out Streaky Bay and Justin tried the oysters (Coffin Bay still gets his vote). Ended it all with 2 nights at the Ceduna foreshore - a really great park with brand spanking new facilities and an awesome tavern next door. Our only regret is not exploring the beaches surrounding Ceduna... we had 2 nights there but we were pooped and prepping for the Nullarbor. Ah well. Justin's favourite beach on the Eyre! (could have something to do with the 5 Whiting and Abalone caught) There is an insane amount of places to stop on the Peninsula and it's overwhelming how many choices/things you miss with not enough time but this is a must we reckon... so quiet, $5 and you know it's a good spot when the only people you meet are the locals. We spent the afternoon at the sheltered beach building castles, fishing, cooking dinner and dolphin spotting. A beauty of a spot but sheesh it was windy! Spent our first day at Greenly indoors hiding from the sand blasting and cold but on our second we headed out to explore the rock pools. While Dad was Shark diving (without sharks ๐ ) the girls and I headed to @glenforest_ to feed some kangaroos and see bloody cute koalas! Fun fact... it's also a winery ๐คฃ - no wine without the designated driver though. Port Lincoln really surprised us! We absolutely loved it. Our trip over the SA border was a week ago - where is the time going!? We did the inland route from the Grampians and found a lovely little @hipcampau where our host took us to feed camels and even had the girls on horseback! (Linda's Bluegum Farm if you're passing through that way ๐) Then it was onto the mighty Murray, somewhere to finally chill and get our new van sorted. We actually chose Lyrup Flats just outside of Berri OVER the highly recommended and apparently epic Big4 Renmark Adventure Park... everyone was a little over stimulated after a chaotic launch into full-time travel and gosh it was a good choice for some downtime! Many Carp caught, epic sunrises and sunsets, hammock swings and even a paddleboard when the wind died down. Site #8 Lyrup Flats is a cracker!
