Back to the last few steps of the process (pictures in reverse order). All of the tiny bits of tape need to come off the back so full strips of tape go across the front. I peeled off the tiny bits carefully so as not to pull pieces up or break them. I’ve used @titebondproducts Dark glue the last few times and I’ve been pleased with the glue, I’m just not sure my too much/too little/just right skill is there yet. Too much glue on the plywood backer and it can seep or soak through the thin veneer which is hard to correct. Too little glue and the pressure from my makeshift press may not catch every tiny piece. Once the glue dried I trimmed edges and held my breath and SLOWLY pulled tape strips off the front, watching for fibers or loose pieces. I was excited not to see any glue spots and only five pieces were loose. I used a toothpick and the new CA glue from @totalboat to address those pieces, did some careful, gentle sanding and applied finish. I’m starting to get a picture in my head for the box I want this to be part of. Thanks again for all your lovely words!! The puzzle part of this project is finally done. I should have tracked the hours it took…or maybe it’s better I didn’t. Next is to apply large strips of tape to the front and very carefully remove all the tiny tape bits from the back. That’s definitely going to take some time. I’m on the @colorcastdesigns blog today with this layout featuring the wood veneer add-on, “sweet pup.” It’s so adorable with the sitting dog’s back and that bit of tail swish outside the circle. It reminds me of my sweet angel Jake sitting for treats or waiting to be harnessed up for his walk. I miss my gentle giant so very much. And making layouts of happy moments with him is therapeutic. The weather kept me indoors for most this spring break week so I started a couple of new paintings. I also pulled out my laser cutter to try my hand at wood collage. Assembling the ginkgo leaf diptych was a heck of lot more challenging than anticipated. I need more practice and better adhesive but am excited about the potential. The little bezel pieces were much easier and more successful (and so cute!). Last echinacea flower post until I figure out what I’m doing with it and make the thing I’m doing with it (which could take a while since I’m such a decisive person). It’s sanded and sealed and I really really love the magic that happens with finish. I’ve been using poly because for some reason my brain thinks it’s more protective (more of a shell? I don’t know) for the tiny pieces. Mara for size reference picture included (ignore the dead plants). I added a frame, taped the front and removed all the tiny tape bits from the back. Tiny tape bit removal is a slow process as I keep an eye out for pieces that didn’t stick to the tape on the front or loose fibers that want to pull up. I know it stresses me out to see all the blue tape when I hold these up to the light but I can’t help myself. Hopefully today I’ll get the backer plywood cut and get this glued down and clamped in my little makeshift press. Last post on this one for now, pictures in reverse order with bonus Fargo pic and me hoarding veneer scraps like I hoard lumber scraps pic at the end. My part is done! I’m relieved the glue up is over and overall really really pleased with how this turned out. I messed up a bit with one side of the plywood sticking out because my veneer cut wasn’t quite square but no large fibers or veneer chunks pulled up with the tape and no glue seeped/soaked through. It isn’t sanded or finished and I can’t wait to see it after @albert.a.kleine does that part. I thought about so many ways to pattern the veneer colors and though it may look like what I actually did was random it wasn’t. I made somewhat of a circle with each color and I started with tiny pieces on the outer edges and increased their sizes towards the center. Shout out to @chelseavanvoorhis who was my original inspiration for trying marquetry and whose “how to” video got me started. Thanks also to ALL of you for the supportive words and encouragement!! I have a Monday morning maple leaf marquetry project update for you. I mentioned this was inspired by @albert.a.kleine and the beautiful marquetry maple leaves he created for his new bench but I didn’t mention that, if my leaf turns out the way I’m hoping, it’s a thank you gift for him. He’s been incredibly supportive and has answered a hundred questions for me. The veneer cutting is finished, I put strips of tape across the front (last picture) and I’m carefully removing the many many many bits of tape in the back. Next is the stressful glue it to the backer process. Glue-ups are definitely stressful for me no matter what type of project. I’m also still working on laundry/bathroom projects and will update on those soon. I was so excited the theme for this year’s Illumine Festival @oaklandcemetery was trees, that my proposal basically wrote itself. I think it is the only proposal that I have ever actually finished and submitted early. I was over the moon to learn that my work included🌝.
