I can’t tell you how excited we are that @universoulartist will be speaking at SNAP this year. I have always believed that learning from people outside of our own industries is just as important as from those within and I am so happy that Kay will be joining us. Kay Rufai is a Photographer, Poet, Filmmaker, Author, Mental Health researcher and founder of the internationally acclaimed S.M.I.L.E-ing Boys projects @smilingboysproject He was the first Artist in residence for West Midlands Police Artist as part of Coventry City of Culture, using creative arts to improve relationships between police and marginalised young people and is now currently residing in LA where he is continuing all of his amazing work. His work spans the past 8 years in a handful of countries including the UK, USA, Ethiopia, Bhutan, Germany, Scandinavia, Mexico, Nigeria and Colombia. His work explores themes of masculinity, identity, mental health, serious youth violence and community cohesion through art, photography, educational workshops, residencies, training and public events. A great deal of his work has directly engaged diverse communities, young people in custody, at-risk youth, refugee and displaced groups of people as well as collaboratively creating bodies of work with them. He has recieved numerous accolades for his research-led series of workshops and exhibitions across the country. The award winning project has featured in the Guardian, Channel 5 news, The voice & the BBC. Having Kay take the stage at SNAP is going to be just incredible and also important. We are so grateful he said yes. SNAP is taking place on the 23rd & 24th April this year in Folkestone, Kent. This is more than just a conference for photographers. It’s a space to learn, be inspired and also be in community. Hast du das Gefühl, du bist als FotografIn weniger wert, weil du noch einen anderen Job neben der Fotografie hast? Stop it. Ich selbst habe die Hochzeitsfotografie 16 (!) Jahre neben einer Festanstellung betrieben. Auch heute, wo ich nicht mehr festangestellt bin, bin ich finanziell weiterhin auf unterschiedliche Füße gestellt. Und das macht mich nicht zu einer schlechteren Fotografin - im Gegenteil! In meinen ersten 10 Jahren als Hochzeitsfotografin bekam ich sehr viel Gegenwind von anderen FotografInnen, die mein Konzept zwei Jobs gleichermaßen zu lieben (wirklich zu lieben!), nicht verstanden haben und mir immer das Gefühl gegeben haben: Du bist keine richtige Fotografin, du machst das ja nur nebenbei, du bist weniger Wert, du kannst das ganz bestimmt gar nicht richtig. Aha. Wir alle sind verschieden, befinden uns in unterschiedlichen Lebensphasen und wir alle haben ganz andere Bedürfnisse und Vorstellungen, wie wir leben und finanziell aufgestellt sein wollen. Deshalb ist es gut und richtig, dass wir alle unterschiedliche Buisness Modelle haben - denn für jeden funktioniert etwas anderes besser. Wer ist hier Typ Sicherheit? Wer ist hier Typ Freiheit? Wer vielleicht beides, wer vielleicht jemand ganz anderes? Du bist du. Vielleicht hast du eine Festanstellung und betreibst die Fotografie als Nebenjob. Oder du bist in zwei ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen selbstständig. Du bist deshalb kein/e schlechter/e FotografIn! Du musst nicht Vollzeit in diese Branche einsteigen. Es ist dein Business. Du entscheidest wie, wo, wann und wie viel du fotografierst! Lass dir niemals von außen suggerieren, wie du dein Business, dein Leben zu führen hast. Meine Designs sind eine Verschmelzung aus dem traditionellem Handwerk und modernem Design – inspiriert von Natur, Kunst, und dem Reisen, sowie der Liebe zu alten Drucktechniken und Papieren. Hey, ich bin Laura & Gründerin von @mindblooming.adventures & @photographybylaurairrgang 💜 Ich fotografiere seit meinem 12. Lebensjahr und heute ist es mein Beruf besondere und authentische Momente für die Ewigkeit festzuhalten. Ich liebe es neue Menschen kennen zu lernen und dabei schöne Gespräche zu führen. Bilder festzuhalten ist für mich sehr besonders, denn sie erzählen eine Geschichte und halten Emotionen fest, die man nicht in Worte fassen kann. Ich bin ein absoluter Kopfmensch und überdenke daher gefühlt alles 100 x, aber es ist wichtig, auch mal loszulassen und sich auf den Moment zu konzentrieren, ohne ständig im Kopf zu sein. Meine größte Leidenschaft ist für mich das Reisen, da man hier einfach mal vom Alltag abschalten kann und neue Orte, Kulturen und Menschen kennenlernen kann – ich bin immer offen für neue Abenteuer und Erfahrungen.
