Hey momsโฆ if you do anything for Motherโs Day - I suggest putting on something other than sweatpants & taking a picture with your kids. Hereโs the thing. This picture. It was actually a really big pain to accomplish. Part of my tripod stand slid off my camera & into the ocean earlier that day. I felt kind of embarrassed getting dressed up & going to the beach. There wasnโt really a โperfect shotโ - definitely not the quality I get when I photograph someone else. But, when I look at this picture .. donโt think of any of those things. I donโt care that my hair isnโt perfect. Or that my little boy was wiggly. I just remember the trip. A trip I took with my middle son to Oregon to see where Goonies was filmed. We stayed in a gorgeous little hotel right on the beach. It had fireplaces and wood floors, and served salt water taffy & warm cookies. We walked the beach & looked for shells, we went to some beautiful state parks, ate together at restaurants .. just the two of us. But my favorite memory .. one I think of as soon as I see this picture is what we did immediately after. It was our last night & we were tired and sandy. My son asked if he could go (by himself) down to the front desk & check out a DVD. And โฆ probably sneak some taffy. He proudly returned with Pirates of the Caribbean & we watched it all cozy in bed with the fireplace going, the sun setting, the waves crashing. It was the perfect quiet night. A night Iโll hold in my heart & get misty eyed thinking of long after heโs all grown up. A night I remember even more vividly because I took this picture. It doesnโt need to be fancy or an epic location. But put on some nice clothes. Do your hair. Wear a little makeup if thatโs something you like. Set up a tripod. Or rest your iPhone somewhere and set a timer. Better yet, ask someone to take it for you. As moms we have so much going on at all times, we have to fight through the process to take the pictures. It wonโt be easy. It will feel like a hassle. It wonโt be perfect. But I promise. I PROMISE.. youโll be so happy you did. And when youโre older or when you are no longer here, I promise .. your kids will be really glad too.
