Art makes me cry Title: ‘this was a densely wooded hill’ ‘this installation is an attempt to make material an immense and accumulatory grief, both collective and personal. by gathering and weaving together disparate, precious materials, some new, some collected over decades of our lives, we ask: what is the shape of mourning? what is the sound of a memory? how do we honor the sharp, tingling sensation of yearning that fills the cavity of our soft bodies when we think of how things could have been? SATPREET KAHLON, REPRESENTING YƏHAẂ INDIGENOUS CREATIVES COLLECTIVE IN COLLABORATION WITH ASIA TAIL AND KIMBERLY DERIANA’ yəhaẃ Indigenous Creatives Collective is an urban Indigenous women-led arts nonprofit whose mission is to help improve Indigenous mental and emotional health outcomes through art-making, community building, and equitable creative opportunities for personal and professional growth.’ • • #yehawshow #yehaw #art #installation #henryartgallery #uw #seattle #washingtonstate #pnw #indigenous #indigenousart

this was a densely wooded hill OCT 1 - MARCH 2023 Our show opened last night at the @henryartgallery and we can’t wait to see how it grows throughout the duration of the show. Thank you to all the visitors who came through, and to all collaborators who participate with the installation in the future. the yəhaw̓ collective welcomes people to leave a small object with front desk staff—a single earring that has lost its pair, or other hand-held items—representations of grief, mourning, hope, and honoring that will be integrated into the installation. In 2021, yəhaw̓ received funding to purchase a site in Seattle for transformative land-based arts programming. The organization’s continuing search for land during the planning of this was a densely wooded hill forms the basis of the installation. The ongoing displacement of Native and Indigenous peoples from their ancestral territories and the institutional preservation of this displacement in museums are its broader context. As you enter the gallery, an overhead, arcing form welcomes you into the space. This cascading archive of objects, connected to community, will continue to grow through the duration of the exhibition. A ground plane depression references the spatial boundaries of a traditional earth lodge, concave formations created by decomposed village sites. Mounds and earthen structures in many forms offer historical context about the ways multiple tribal communities across Turtle Island have nurtured and cared for the land, and have also been displaced. #thiswasadenselywoodedhill #yehaw #yehawshow #henryartgallery #indigenousart

Sasquatch Stories, photograph, 2018 by Erik Sanchez Erik Sanchez (Shoalwater Bay/Chinook) creates narrative Native photography and film while documenting contemporary society and landscapes. He is visually inspired by the snapshot aesthetic, German expressionism, film noir, stoner comedy & rock and roll culture. Sanchez utilizes surrealism as a device to portray Native stories and their connection to the spirit world and as a way to communicate empathy with his viewers. His visuals are music driven and his themes include mysticism, social justice, poverty and climate change. While his work focuses on the sacredness of the spirit world and his understandings about Indigenous cosmology, they are also motivated by heavy emotions of drama and comedy, draped over narratives as conceptual ideas and visual storylines. His hypnotic landscapes combined with melodramatic characters pave the way for unique surreal portraiture. What I See Before Me Are the Seeds of Our People, mixed media on panel, 2019 by Clair Rand “As a person of Zacateca, Chihuahua, Black, and Spanish ancestry, I gravitate to themes of ancestral awakening, mixed-race identity, womxn’s wisdom, disruption of structures, and personal narrative. I’m drawn to the natural world with her inherent power and beauty. By incorporating aspects of earth—mica dust, glass, fiber—into my creations, each piece honors the earth and my ancestors. Currently, I work with acrylics, pastels, charcoals, oils, fibers, and photography to express my artistic vision. My acrylic paintings have become a canvas to allow self-discovery and to investigate polarities within my identity as a multi-cultural woman. Recently, I’ve been exploring more of what it means to be a Latina of African-American, Indigenous, and Spanish heritage. I feel proud, empowered, and grateful to hold such a rich cultural history, and to better understand the strengths inherited as a result of my ancestors’ displacement and survival. This has been a source of new knowledge for me as I mature. My recent self-portraits focus on mirroring my two main cultural differences. They are not literal representations of my Mexican and African-American cultures, but symbolic of my pride to be a mixed-race female with integrated realities. The work is to reveal the beauty and power behind being part of two incredible worlds. As my paintings fuse a variety of colors over the main subjects, they provide a great mental note informing me of the deeply rich cultures that birthed who I am today.” @clairesart__ • • • • • #Indigenousartists #Indigenousart #Nativeartists #Nativeart #yehawshow #ClairRand

Minstrel Man: Traveling Singer, river sandstone from Burrand Inlet in Vancouver, BC, 2018 by Carl Sam “I am ‘Ha7li’ of the Bear Clan from Skookumchuck, part of St'at'icmulh Nation, sometimes referred to as the Interior Salish. I believe I was destined to be an artist. Back in ‘grade one’ when I was given the first opportunity to draw, I drew an Easter bunny with ease, impressing my classmates. At that time I knew I was blessed with a gift, which I could utilize and enjoy later in life. After graduating from Vancouver Secondary in 1974, I went to various colleges to further my study of the arts: Langara College for Fine Arts, Emily Carr College of Art for wood and stone carving, and Fraser Valley College for printmaking. I work with wood carving, painting, drawing, cake decorating, printing, drum-making, and singing. I really took a shine to working with multiple variations of stone - from soapstone, alabaster, limestone, and ice, to harder rocks of sandstone, andisite, granite, and jade. All of these mediums have good results as well as challenges. From the onset of sculpting, I have been drawn to carving people and animals - depicting their livelihood and captured in stone for time immemorial. It gives me pleasure to visualize something in a stone, then I merely go about bringing it out in a stone sculpture. I am currently situated in BC, working full-time as a Community Wellness Worker for our people. I love walking along creeks and spotting potential stones that I immediately ‘see within’ and then I have a heavy load to carry home. Each piece is a unique sculpture as envisioned between the rock and myself, to give pleasure to the beholder. ‘Kukstum-kalh snek-nukwa’ --Thank you my friend.” #Indigenousartists #Indigenousart #Nativeartists #Nativeart #yehawshow #CarlSam #Skookumchuck #St'at'icmulh

Mallory lives in Portland, Oregon but grew up in Oklahoma and is a member of the Cherokee Nation. She has received grants from the Oregon Arts Commission, Ford Family Foundation, and the Regional Arts & Culture Council. She is a recipient the Eiteljorg Contemporary Native Art Fellowship, the Native Arts and Culture Foundation Fellowship in Visual Art and the Ucross Native Fellowship. 7 Sisters, digital print, 2019 by Elise Snow Andrews (Kiowa) According to the Kiowa story of the Seven Sisters, the Big Dipper was created while seven sisters and their brother were playing at the base of Devil’s Tower and the boy transformed into a bear. The sisters, terrified, ran away as their bear-brother chased them. The sisters stumbled upon the stump of a huge tree. The tree spoke to them and told them to climb upon it. After the sisters did so, the tree began to rise into the air, lifting the girls. When the bear arrived to where the tree had been, the sisters were already out of reach. The seven sisters became the stars forming the Big Dipper when they reached the sky. Ever since, the Kiowa have had kin in the night sky. (text by Ellie DiCola)

Some Amazing News!!! 🎨🖌️✨ Thanks to @yehawshow 😭💚 I have been selected as one of the artists to have a mural banner on display April 17- mid May at @madartseattle !!! I have a big story to tell and I'm happy I get to share it in such a way. Part of it is about the recognition of spring and motherhood/grandmother and some of where I come from, to acknowledgement of many Blackfeet and other tribes relocating to the Seattle (Duwamish/Snohomish/Snoqualmie/etc) area even though it wasn't their ancestral land due to the harmful Indian Relocation Act in the 1950s. I'm hoping to honor and acknowledge that loss but show strength in intertribal Native communities. So I'm excited to take my concept image and fully plan out my painting! The other artist is of no surprise to me, it is @paige_pettibon / @plain_to_sea ! 🥳♥️✨ . . . #madartseattle #mural #painting #seattleart #mixednatives #mixedartists #yehawshow #madart #thisisnativeland

THANK YOU 🙌🏽 Kim Deriana @kimberlycorinne for a doing such a wonderful job of building community at your residency at SAM OSP PACCAR Pavilion. Last night was the one night only public event which culminated a series of Indigenous community weaving events using cattails in various ways. I was honored to be present for and assist with the ancestors braids (seen in the distance) the story of which @kullarae had just finished telling when I arrived. I loved seeing how it all turned out and so wonderful to see many friends❤️, who are my friends because @yehawshow brought our community together- it is a privilege and an honor to be here on Duwamish Land! Special and such well deserved thanks were given to Asia last night which brought tears of joy to my eyes. Also, @digbysmalls let me borrow his tie for the evening - and I begin today with the optimism of Spring on the way! #yehawshow #kimderiana thanks to @plain_to_sea and @kullarae for weaving, braiding, story and song. Unfortunately I was late and missed the first two or three performances. #cattailweaving #indigenouswomenrising #contemporaryart #seattleart #indigenousart #americanart #installationart #ceremony #westandwithwetsuweten #uchinanchu

This photo encapsulates what it has meant to me to be a part of @yehawshow as a grateful /lucky / indigenous artist / art handler my practices merged fully in this durational performance of returns. 👅Spokane: 2019. I rented #pensketruck in background and returned art to participating artists in Spokane and Portland. Here @roin.morigeau / Bird, and @j.johns / Steve meet me / each other / Digby & share a vegan waffle. We all travel everywhere with our dogs because we #indigenous. There’s a lot more to write about this experience to do it justice... so please stay tuned. Suffice it to say in this season of giving thanks, let’s keep these important conversations going. Together we can. Speak up. We are stronger together. Be heard. Listen. Make connections. Be in community. Help. XOXO CCU #youareonindigenousland #togetherweliftthesky #yehawshow #thanksgiving #thanks to @asiatail @itssatpreet @tracyrectorart @priscilladobler_studio @plain_to_sea @chiefseattleclub @seaofficeofarts and @naahillaheefund #mymom #theasskickers @cogean @950gallery and @sayamoriyasu @mcgrathjeffrey and so many others for this time and space to figure my shit out in community ✊🏽I am great full. This one post is never going to be enough - so let’s keep going! If we are islands we exist in archipelagos connected by the sea. XOXO CCU
