Very successful night last night. On the way to the high seat I got a buck then after 45 minutes in the high seat a young buck came out about 140 yards away and slowly worked his way closer to us. British Shooting Shotgun Series OTR Round 1 and England Team Selection Shoot. I shot my last registered OTR back in October. Having squeezed in six rounds of OTR practice this holiday, I headed to Nuthampstead for the @british_shooting SS Round 1 this weekend. There were constant changes in the light and very strong gusty winds. The rain held off, but the conditions were still very challenging. I finished day 2 with a score of 109, which I was happy with, considering my lack of practice and the conditions. This placed me joint 4th in Junior Men and meant I had to compete for bib number in a 3 way shoot-off with Lewis Kirk and Will Canter. I am happy to have won the shoot-off and missed the pheasants on the layout. The final was very tense, and it went down to the last clay to decide the winner. I am thrilled to have scored 40 and come away with the Junior Men's Gold medal. Congratulations to Lewis Kirk for winning Bronze and to Harry Poolman for winning Silver. Well done to all the other medal winners and to Ben Killian, who achieved a Junior Men's MCS of 115. A big thank you to Ed, Nicki, and all at British Shooting for hosting the event. Simulated Game Day. Last weekend, I went away with some of my @uonshooting teammates. I would like to thank our hosts, the Layton family, for a wonderful day of simulated game. We shot four drives and then a 20 bird flush. Thank you to teammate James Quessy for partnering me in the flush, where we scored an unbeaten 16. The ground was a little wet underfoot, but that did not dampen our spirits. The food was hearty, and the company was amazing. It was great to catch up afterwards with local lad Tom Betts. It was a real eye opener as to the ongoing work they are doing to protect and serve the present & future generations of wildfowlers. Basc tend to get some stick as to what they're actually doing for us, I have been guilty of those thoughts myself. However after last night's presentation, it really is clear they are working tirelessly behind the scenes. Not all of what they're doing can be disclosed to the public as it may hinder their efforts. @james_greencountry & his team really are leading the way in terms of carrying out the research needed ready for when the looming question arises... Are we shooting sustainably? In my opinion this club & another I'm a member of certainly are without question. But the research needed to prove that starts with us, wildfowlers. I will be giving out the leaflets regarding this research at our next AGM next month. 100 ESP, Orston SG. This was my first registered ESP shoot since 2020, and although I compete regularly in the university team, this was completely different. Dad and Robert decided to come, and we were joined by fellow @uonshooting teammate Ted and his dad. I can honestly say that I think we all found the going very tough. The changeable conditions played havoc with the targets, and I had to share my gun with Dad when he found it too difficult to continue with the SxS he was using. We had a lot of similar targets, which Dad calls "floppy droppers". They seemed to be badly affected by the wind, and although nothing defeated me completely, I was somewhat relieved to finish. I was then pleasantly surprised to discover that I had beaten both Dad and Robert. Boxing Day. Boxing Day walks are a tradition for many families. Ours involved a drive first, to the East of England Shooting Ground. I thought I would make the most of the good weather before it changed. A little wet underfoot, but otherwise, the conditions and the targets were great. I managed to master all but one of the targets with my @eleyhawk Selects, Blues, and VIP Federations. I finished walking around the layouts and still had 6 VIP Federation cartridges burning a hole in my pocket, so I thought I might as well use them up on the Extreme 8 layout. I have never had the nerve to try it until now. I didn't think I would stand a chance, but I managed to hit the A target after four attempts, then the B target with my last cartridge. They certainly needed a lot more lead than I had anticipated. Festive Trap Trophy Shoot. I came back home from university yesterday, just in time to travel to East Yorkshire today, for the Festive Trap Trophy Shoot. Having not shot any Trap since October, it took me a little while to settle in and switch from Sporting to Trap mode. I struggled a bit with the shadows across some of the trenches, especially on the Universal Trench layout, but it was lovely to see the sun this late in the year. My scores of 24 (DTL), 20 (UTR), 21 (OTR), 24 (ABT), and 43 (DR) gave me a total of 132/150. This placed me in Joint 4th place overall and Joint 3rd for A Class prize money. Congratulations to High Gun @mark_winser, who retained the trophy. Thank you to the Halls for hosting this competition and to the hardworking referees and kitchen staff. Great targets and excellent refreshments! It was great to end the competition year with a bang. Thank you to Rob for storing my Beretta SO5 Trap gun for me whilst I have been at university, but it's good to have it back now for the holidays. Thank you also to @eleyhawk. BUCS Clay Shooting Championship 2023 With an 80% chance of rain and gusty winds forecast, today's competition looked like it might be a wash-out. Fortunately, the weather was fairly kind to us, and we briefly saw the sunshine. Whilst the conditions underfoot were somewhat treacherous at times, the weather was not as bad as predicted. We shot 100 birds over 13 stands, and I managed to straight 3 of them. As expected, the last 6 stands were tougher than the first ones. I finished on 75, which was a little disappointing. Well done to all my teammates, and especially to @josh.bennion, who scored 90. Nottingham Men's Team is currently in 2nd place, and the Ladies' Team is currently in 4th place. The competition continues tomorrow, so we will have to wait until then to find out how the other university teams get on.
