🎉 Congratulations to Miranda Carroll on completing her MA in AHVS! 🎓 The title of my research paper was "Miss Esther Lyons Brings the Imagined Klondike to Carnegie Hall." American actress Esther Lyons (1864-1938), despite having never travelled to the Klondike region, became the ‘Klondike Girl’ in composite photographs, in performance, and, for many years, in the historical record. Lyons transposed her image into Yukon landscape photographs taken by photographer Veazie Wilson to illustrate her alleged journey through the vast northern wilderness. My research concerned these photographic manipulations that served as central to Esther Lyons’ performances and promotional material, focusing on Esther Lyons’ flyer advertising her lectures at Carnegie Hall during the week of February 28, 1898. Join us in celebrating Miranda's remarkable achievement 🌟 #AHVS #MA #Congratulations #Research #VictorianFashion #uvic #uviclife #uvicart #uvicarthistory

🎉 Congratulations to Ann Edelstein on completing her MA in AHVS! 🎓 My research into muslin and beetle wing dresses seeks to understand the role that clothing and collecting played in the lives of Victorian women and how they found empowerment in a patriarchal society. I consider the cultural climate in nineteenth-century Britain and how Naturalism and Romanticism inspired a sense of fantasy and curiosity in relation to beetle wing dresses. I also consider the colonial implications of British women’s desire to wear appropriated materials. In using Barbara Morrison’s beetle wing dress as a case study, I examine a variety of factors that may have contributed to the appeal of beetle wing dresses for fashionable British women. Hello all! Here are a couple of interesting Cultural Resource Management courses that will be available to take this fall. AHVS 488J: Curatorship: Contemporary Perspectives reflects our growing understanding of the important relationships that exist between museums and their constituents. Museums and other public exhibition sites of all disciplines, sizes and settings are not only mirrors of society but also play influential roles. As societies change, these sites become zones of contestation in which notions of popular and high culture, old and new technologies, science and art, race and gender, individuals and communities interact. They can develop into arenas for important public debates about the definition and creation of a good society. https://continuingstudies.uvic.ca/museums-heritage-and-indigenous-culture/courses/curatorship-contemporary-perspectives/ And AHVS 488N: Digital Planning for the Cultural Sector. Digital Planning for the Cultural Sector provides just-in-time training for professionals in the museum, heritage and cultural sector to develop the critical competencies and skills needed to make informed decisions around the future of digital technologies for cultural organizations. Learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities for cultural organizations in a digital economy, alongside tools and strategies to successfully plan and implement digital initiatives. https://continuingstudies.uvic.ca/museums-heritage-and-indigenous-culture/courses/digital-planning-for-the-cultural-sector/ Both courses are online asynchronous and begin on September 11th. Both are also eligible for the StrongerBC future skills grant, so tuition could be covered by the program. #culturalresourcemanagement #uvic #ahvs

Here's our final preview of AHVS 337A: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art. This is a performance art piece that Yang will cover in the class: it's called Family Tree by Zhang Huan (2001). From Yang: "On a morning in 2001, artist Zhang Huan invited three calligraphers to a local park. Over the next few hours, in a painstaking process recorded in the photographs shown above, they took turns to write on Zhang’s face and neck. Their Chinese calligraphy – quotations from Classic Chinese literature – gradually accumulated, until the artist’s skin was totally black. His face slowly disappearing beneath the blackness, you come to feel the elaborate web of social and cultural relations smothering any sense of the individual. As a theme of this artwork, the complex tangle of history and tradition override the individual identity." AHVS 337A will be delivered online on Thursday afternoons this fall from 2:30 until 5:20 pm. As stated, it's online and the CRN is 10077. Yang Liu, who also teaches the History of Video Games and Interactive Media and the History of Japanimation, will be the instructor. #ahvs #contemporarychineseart #uvic #arthistory

The last time I saw you you were looking for summer work. Were you able to find anything suitable? Funnily enough after a lot of deliberation: I ended up taking the whole summer off from any kind of work because of the savings I had and how miserable the summer job market is. Making this choice in the background to pressing economic circumstances is strange, but it's helping me relax before I hit the trenches again for the MA program. Not to soapbox: but I’m exponentially fortunate to be in a position to do this under current circumstances and I doubt many of my peers are comfortable enough to do the same. There was a fantastic CBC interview a month ago where a Toronto-based food bank organizer drew attention to Canada’s unemployment rate being at a significant low, but food bank usage across Canada is skyrocketing. If the interview was talking about people ‘across the cubicle’ starting to show up at food banks, you’d best believe a lot of university students across Canada are also showing up there. Plans for this summer outside of work? I’ve already gone camping with my parents and have some trips planned either to Van or up-island, but I’m mostly doing hobby stuff and sleeping this summer. Stress hits my sleeping patterns during the semester, so a summer long nap is kind of a dream. What do you hope the trajectory will be for your degree? Do you want to move further into academia, do you want to move into the gallery space, collections? Perhaps you’re undecided? Masters will absolutely be my jumping off point for a while before I return to school. Whether I’ll work in a gallery or data collections capacity is undecided but I’m looking to work a ‘regular job.’ (3/3) #uvic #ahvs

Check out my interview with recent AHVS graduate Peter Grauer. Peter was accepted into the AHVS MA program and is starting this fall: Are you from Victoria or did you move here for school? I’m originally from Saskatchewan, but I moved here 5 years ago after a gap year. BC, and Vic in particular, was always sort of calling me after I attended summer camps out here, and Sask loses a lot of people to provincial migration on the regular so I’m not an anomaly. Why Art History? Mostly because I was good at it? I initially started UVIC as an education student, had an extremely rough first semester where AHVS was my only real glowing grade (taking five courses in first year will do that to you). I just followed AHVS with the intent of going back into education until I realized education was definitely not where my passion was How have you been supporting yourself through your studies? I’ve been supporting myself a bit with part time work and other methods, but RESP savings and a favorable living situation helped drastically. This was basically only possible because I had a space I could pay room and board for; drastically cutting down the race to find fairly-priced yearly or even ‘semester-ly’ accommodation that I see my peers go through every year. My understanding is you just graduated, correct? Yep! Graduated with honors, a pretty good GPA, and a promising academic future. Are you going to convocation this Friday? I am going to convocation more so because my folks want to celebrate, but, seeing as I’m heading into the MA program at UVIC literally next fall, it kind of feels like we're celebrating two years early (assuming the MA program goes swimmingly). If I overheard correctly at the Celebrating Community year-end gathering, you were accepted into the MA program? Yep! I was approached on the off chance I’d be interested in working on a late application to the AHVS MA program. (1/3) Continued... #AHVS #uvic

Here's another reason to consider taking AHVS 337A: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art this fall. I've been talking with the instructor Yang Liu and he's shared a few of the pieces he's going to be discussing in class. So consider this a preview of 337A. Exhibit 2: White Clouds by Li Jinghu, light installation (2009). In 2009, artist Li Jinghu showed his minimalist installation piece White Clouds in J&Z gallery, Shenzhen, China. As a witness of the drastic change of his hometown Dongguan, which is known as part of the free-trade special economic zone and China’s manufacturing hub, Li responded to the influence of the rapid regional economic growth in his installation piece. This artwork consists a lattice of light tubes for industrial use, which are delicately arranged into the shape of clouds. The inanimate artificial glow contains the implication of tedious factory life and required overtime working shifts for the demands of the global market. With this expansion of manufacturing industry, the traditional living mode of the whole Pearl Delta region was altered. Ancestral residence, lakes and farmlands were all transformed into factories, meanwhile peasants were transformed into factory workers. Along with these transformations, in the installation piece of White Clouds, the indifferent industrial lighting that shines above the manufacturing assemble lines every day and night, eventually replaces the real clouds from the nature. If this has triggered your curiousity, AHVS 337A will be held Thursday afternoons this fall from 2:30 until 5:20 pm. It's online and the CRN is 10077. More fellowship news! The Art Canada Institute has named doctoral candidate Jennifer Bowen to the Redefining Canadian Art History Fellowship Program, which recognizes the work of art scholars on artists who have been previously overlooked due to their gender, race, or cultural background. Jennifer has been recognized for her work on Hay River Indigenous artist Don Cardinal (1944 - 1985). "Through Cardinal, Bowen explores the roots of contemporary Indigenous art and the transformation of traditional art into contemporary expression." Congratulations to Jennifer! If you browse a couple of posts back, there should be a link to recent CBC interview that Jennifer gave on Cardinal, if you're curious about learning more. #uvic #ahvs #doncardinal #artcanadainstitute Almost forgot: here's the link to the website. https://www.aci-iac.ca/about-our-fellowships/meet-the-2022-23-fellows/

Very pleased now to present the research of Art History MA candidate Pascalle Ricard. I will give the floor to Pascalle to explain in her own words: Humans collect things. We surround ourselves with things by choice, by familiarity and even out of requirement. These things are both informed by our use of them as well as the deeper symbolic meaning they hold to us. Our things live with us and lead lives all to their own, they become part of our rituals and they shape our cultures. Even the most minimalist lifestyles include things that matter a great deal to us. Materiality does not equal superficiality; it is the physical representation of our abstract ideas and thoughts. Material culture of humans is personal and historical, it can communicate a great deal about individuals and the groups they part of. Photos, paintings, and sculptures are forms of material culture just as books, cups and clothes are. These things are created by humans for humans and can tell us stories about the people that make, cherish, love and even worship with them. A Mezuzah ( מְזוּזָה Meh-zoo-zah; plural; Mezuzot) is a historical and contemporary Jewish ritual object, it is a piece of Jewish material culture and is found on religious and nonreligious Jewish homes. The Mezuzah has many functions and for some that is a house protection amulet and consists of two components: the decorative exterior and prayer scroll or klaf (קְלָף klah-f) within. Together they are affixed to the main entrance of an individual’s home door frame as well as the interior ones. The decorative exterior of it takes on two forms, the cylindrical holder and the klaf it houses inside, together which are pinned to a door frame, or in a shield like form that covers a niche that is carved into a door frame containing the kalf. (1 of 2. Continued in next photo...) #mezuzah #arthistory #OJMCHE #ahvs #uvic #graduateresearch

You know, I sent out an email to our students last week, but it appears I forgot to update our social media. The department has some good news. About two weeks ago, Dr. Erin Campbell was appointed Chair of the department, which will start on July 1st, 2023 and run until June 30th, 2028. Dr. Campbell is already doing a wonderful job as Acting Chair, which she's been doing since February, and she's been Chair once before too in the past. We're very excited that she'll be providing leadership for the department over the next five years, and as many of you already know, Dr. Campbell is a great person. Join with me in wishing her a round of congratulations! #newchair #ahvs #uvic #drerincampbell

It's time for another alumni spotlight Q&A! This is Ryan Church, who graduated from AHVS with an honours BA (with distinction). He is now the founder and CEO of Biome Renewables. 1. Where are you working and what is your position? Founder and CEO of Biome Renewables. 2. How did your degree in Art History prepare you for your current position? Were there any particular skills you learned that have been helpful in your current position? The ability to see and assess information critically has been a thread that has continued to be of utmost importance in my current endeavors. The ability to process a lot of information (sometimes conflicting!) quickly has also helped me. Strategies for aligning my thoughts and writing them down succinctly is a transferable skill for anyone. 3. Where do you see yourself in five years? CEO of Biome Renewables! 4. Any memories stick out about your time at UVic? The rabbits! Oh, the many many rabbits. I hear these fuzzy borrowers have all but disappeared, which makes me a little sad - though I guess the grounds and maintenance team is relieved. That, and the proximity to the ocean and the many amazing profs and colleagues at school! 5. Any advice to current AHVS students? This degree can be your career path, or a stepping stone to other things (as I hope I showed). Curiosity about the world should drive your decisions in AHVS. We are also adding Ryan to our alumni pages on the AHVS website, if you're curious to see more of his biography. Thanks for checking in Ryan! #biomerenewables #ryanchurch #ahvs #uvic #honours #renewableenergy

It was the Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Awards (JCURA) fair yesterday, and student award projects were on display in the Student Union Building. This award encourages undergraduate students in 3rd or 4th year to pursue innovative research to enhance their own learning at UVic. And Art History & Visual Studies was represented by superlative students Noah Pacina and Hayden Reich. Noah's project was "19th-Century Visions of Prague: Guiding UNESCO Historical Preservation and Urban Development in the City Today." Hayden's project was "Japonisme in Early British-American Tattooing." And you can see their posters! Noah's is here: https://dspace.library.uvic.ca/handle/1828/14879 And Hayden's is here: https://dspace.library.uvic.ca/handle/1828/14904 Congratulations to Noah and Hayden! Summer courses have been filling up fast, but there's still some room available in Michael Reed's AHVS 392: Victorian Medievalism. From Dr. Reed: "Victorian Medievalism" is an interdisciplinary exploration of medievalism in the Victorian Age. We'll emphasize material culture, especially architecture and painting, but we'll also address literature for comparative purposes. The course will be informed by the archaeological notions of "core" and "periphery." We'll explore how medievalism in the British diaspora differed in intent, expression and meaning(s) between the core (Great Britain) and colonial peripheries (primarily the City of Victoria, but we'll also reference examples from the Caribbean). This course is designed as a field school: each week we'll have two on-campus lectures and one field school at various locations in the City of Victoria, including Ross Bay Cemetery, Craigdarroch Castle, Christ Church Cathedral, the Church of Our Lord and Pioneer Square. #ahvs #uvic #victorian #medieval #summerschool

I was recently in contact with one of our alumni, who agreed to a Q&A with us. This is Brittany Lee, Gallery Manager at the Madrona Gallery in downtown Victoria. I'm really happy to get a Q&A from inside Madrona because it's always really impressed me as a gallery owned, operated, and staffed almost entirely by AHVS graduates. Check out the brief interview below: Spotlight Questions Brittany Lee Bachelor of Arts in History of Art (2015) Masters of Arts in Collections (2016) Where are you working? I’m working with Madrona Gallery, where I’ve been since 2019. What is your position? Gallery Manager. How did your degree in Art History prepare you for your current position? Were there any particular skills you learned that have been helpful in your current position? My degree in Art History helped me to develop the ability to research art works efficiently, and write and speak about complex themes in a direct way that a wide audience can connect with. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself continuing to work in the arts, helping people connect with art they love and further developing my knowledge of both historic and contemporary Canadian artists across the country. Any memories stick out about your time at UVic? Enjoying the Quad between classes on sunny days, studying sessions at the Bibliocafe as a first year student, and most recently, coming across the Ted Harrison murals in the UVIC Social Sciences & Maths building. Any advice to current AHVS students? Be open to all and any opportunities - a degree in Art History & Visual Studies gives you a vast skill set that’s valuable in many fields of work, and you never know where one opportunity might lead. Lastly, look for work placement options to get hands-on experience and develop your networking skills to get your name out there. Thanks for the Q&A, Brittany! #ahvs #uvic #madronagallery #alumni
