Gupta encourages us to think about the following questions: ⭐How many initiatives have we seen die because somebody moves on and all of a sudden the ownership is gone? ***ALL OF US, RIGHT?*** ⭐So, did TRUE leadership really happen? ⭐Did any real true change take place? It’s not about just getting an initiative implemented...it’s more about what happens when you step back or away. ⭐Does it stay standing? ⭐Are there people who can keep it in place? So when you think of your goals as a leader, instead of the idea of just getting things implemented, your whole action plan changes because you start to realize you have to get more people involved. You have to build in more systems. ****Build capacity for SUSTAINABILITY!**** This is definitely what I listen for and measure AFTER working with school districts. Are you practicing gratitude? It is a daily practice for me. I struggle with the challenges that public education can bring our way, however, I TRULY believe TOGETHER we can figure out our kiddos’ needs! I have never felt like I have personally had all the answers. I surround myself with others who I can learn and grow from. Speaking of all the tasks administrators are responsible for...legal knowledge is one more! Of course, school administrators can consult the school district's general counsel attorney and it is certainly necessary and appropriate. However, there are MANY day-to-day decisions that have legal ramifications. It only helps school administrators to understand basic legal concepts and frameworks on which pertinent education law rests so they can act decisively and legally to manage effective schools. What are the pieces of legislation you should be aware of and why and what do they look like on a practical level.for and about ELs. 'Noncompliance usually results from confusion or misinformation, rather than negligence or malice. Remember the why… This last week I got to teach! I got to teach K and 4th grade! Getting into the classroom with kids, doing the day to day work is so important, especially in my current role. All the “other” stuff can work against us to keep us from getting back to the reason for it all, learning! There is just something about being able to close the door, be with the kids, and foster learning in them to help them meet their potential! It had been too long since I was able to teach so I am so glad to have had the opportunity twice in the last week. I believe this is something all administrators should do from time to time. It helps keep reality in check and provides the joy for our role! Be the Voice of Inspiration AND Voice the why. It is why it's important to voice the why - to center the cause around genuinely something we EACH value. Not for the sake of simply sharing the why. No matter how much experience everyone has around you - everyone needs inspiration. Hope. Something to believe in. Something valuable. ESPECIALLY when things seem impossible. The world around us is not always pretty. It is YOUR job to be the voice of inspiration - in your own way - for your organization as the leader. Be the person you wish to be around. WE want to be around that palpable feeling of inspiration - hope - happiness. WE want to know we are making a difference and are valued where we work every single day. Our field is hard so it's important to create the environment you want to work in and share the vision you have for what's possible. Your motivation and inspiration WILL inspire those around you. It WILL be contagious. Remember, who you hear from the most does not necessarily reflect everyone's opinions - it's only reflective of the people you are hearing from so make the effort and use strategies that work to include and hear from every single voice. WE can do hard things…what hard thing did you do this week with the help of someone else? Days can be hard in education and no one can explain the why specifically behind it because there can be so many reasons…we can point out different barriers and challenges that arise however we forget all the good while in those heavy feelings. Here’s the thing, I personally do not deny those things, I just look for the positive and try to recreate it. I do that alongside people and try to highlight the positive in them. It is so important to understand everyone is fighting a battle you can’t see. WE can work TOGETHER to help find solutions and better outcomes for our students and the future of the World. No one person has all the answers. We all do, TOGETHER though when we seek them alongside one another. Seek those who are going to lift you up and help you climb the barriers that arise in our jobs or be one to help others find the positive. So excited to kick off the new year supporting an additional school with a new role as Spring Grove’s Elementary Assistant Principal! I get to continue supporting my beloved two schools, Paradise and New Salem, and now adding in SGE as well! Learning and growing alongside educators is a gift I have had in my 15 years in education. When I grow that family who teaches me through collaboration and problem solving for what is best for kids, my heart is so happy! What has you most excited for the new year!?!? All the butterflies and excitement it around as teachers begin to have students in their classrooms or as they prep their classrooms. Soon, the halls, classrooms, cafeteria, gym, etc. will be bustling with noise and joy as students join us back in the building. One of my favorite books is “Kids Deserve It” by Adam Welcome and Todd Nesloney. It highlights in one of the chapters the reminder that schools are designed for kids, not adults. What can we do to make our schools designed more for the students, not the adults? In a conversation yesterday, I was reminded that sometimes we make schedules, plans, or student lists based on the adults, not what is truly best for the support, love, and ability to meet the needs of our kiddos. We think through our perspective, not theirs. It is a natural response as we are not kids, we are adults. As we look toward the coming year, what is something you can do or are excited about because you put the kiddos hat on and know it will bring them joy?
