💡 High performing teams need strong boundaries -- a statement on first glance that may seem to be contradictory to the value of autonomy.⁠ ⁠ In every team, the responsibilities of each individual in the team form the essence of interactions and decisions. ⁠ ⁠ For instance, all team members need to know:⁠ ⁠ 👉️ The organizational purpose: the difference their company is trying to make.⁠ 👉️ Their own individual purpose as it relates to the organization’s purpose.⁠ 👉️ What is expected of them in terms of outcome and contribution.⁠ 👉️ What they can expect of others in their roles.⁠ ⁠ This last point is probably the most important when it comes to minimizing conflict within the team, yet knowing what we can expect from our team members is an often overlooked part of the team conversation. ⁠ ⁠ It’s too easy to focus on our own little area of expertise and then get irritated when someone steps on our toes, or fails to deliver something we need.⁠ ⁠ It’s a case of unclear expectations.⁠ ⁠ When team members know what is expected of them AND what they can expect from their peers, we start to build a systemic understanding of how our roles interact in a more symbiotic fashion.⁠ ⁠ For more discussion on the autonomy, mastery, and purpose components of effective team-building, head on over to the blog! #Flexibility and workplace #autonomy are not interchangeable. While companies are going out of their way to demonstrate just how flexible they are, employees are not impressed. 🥱 Long gone are the days of showing blind loyalty and being afraid one will be seen as inefficient working remotely. True, there’s nothing wrong with flexibility; it’s just not enough anymore. 🤷🏽‍♀️ The problem is it implies at least some limit and centralised control that’s usually still there for the sake of keeping a sense of corporate order that nobody identifies with at this point. Instead, people are looking for workplace autonomy that gives them the freedom to define their routines, and they are not being the least bit apologetic about it. Not all companies can keep up though. Creating truly autonomous workplaces takes relentless pursuit of: 1️⃣ Equity: Each employee gets what they need to do their job efficiently. 2️⃣ Respect for one’s choice: People don’t feel pressured to pick an option or a routine. 3️⃣ Culture fitness: Team members embrace autonomy and it doesn’t disturb their sense of belonging. HOW THROWING OUT MY TO-DO LIST GAVE ME THE FREEDOM TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE. The single productivity hack of binning my to-do list saved me time, gave me greater focus and eliminated the unnecessary tasks from my day. Three wins from binning the to-do list; 1. I scheduled tasks directly into my calendar. Thinking about how long each task would take and planning the right amount of time. 2. I eliminated over promise and under deliver. When adding a task to my calendar, I will only schedule it where there is time, then communicate that. ” I will have that ready for you by next Wednesday”. 3. Reduced overwhelm and stress through planning what has to be done, thinking through the time it would take and communicating to those involved. ❓What have you done to be more productive? I just completed reading ‘Sense & Respond’ by Jeff Gothelf and Josh Seiden I enjoyed reading this book and found it easy to consume. I can imagine most people in the Tech space to be broadly aware of most of the concepts in this book however, we should never underestimate the power of repetition in our learning. The book also calls on some great examples of real world applications which I really enjoyed. I found this quote on @goodreads to be a great summary and similar to my experience: “The book you wish your CEO would read. And your manager. And your colleague. All your colleagues. The ideas expressed in this book are not new. Not revolutionary. Not mind blowing. Instead, the book takes ideas practised by individual contributors and showcases them for managers. Jeff and Josh use simple words and avoid going into great detail.
